One of those not-so-subtle "eyesex" moments, though it's mostly on Kirk's side. Spock seems to be smiling to himself for the entire episode. Ridiculous humans and their inability to control themselves around women.

@@bensisko4651 - True! I think he should have kept using it judiciously, though. I think SO MANY later actors have gotten Vulcans wrong, played them too woodenly. One thing I realize more and more these days: Everybody starting with TNG and later has had actors playing Vulcans wrong. Nimoy always played Spock dry, subtle, measured, and understated. So did Mark Lenard. The actress that portrayed T'Pau played her as ancient and reserved; the actress playing T'Pring played her cold and manipulative. But after TOS, almost all Vulcans are played stiff, wooden, and awkward. They speak in awkward, stiff cadences for the most part. I don't understand it, really. The model, Leonard Nimoy, was there for everybody to see and emulate.
@ElfQuestComicDubFamily3 жыл бұрын
I feel like the major exception to this rule is Tuvok (played by Tim Russ) he was able to play a Vulcan convincingly, and was able to put his own spin on it, T’Pol and everyone else on the other hand 😬
@florbfnarb70993 жыл бұрын
@@ElfQuestComicDubFamily - I admit I didn’t see a lot of Voyager, but Tuvok always felt unnecessarily stiff to me. T’Pol at times felt alright, other times she seemed excessively uptight. I suppose some of it is a matter of taste, but nobody else has gotten Nimoy’s blend of coolness and confidence down, really. While I think Pine and Urban did great work as Kirk and McCoy, Quinto again played Spock as uptight; he always looks uncomfortable, as though he thinks he’s done something wrong but can’t figure out what.

It's the sad turn of events that just made all TV suck. Not just NexGen but everything.
@VVeremoose2 жыл бұрын
@@ElfQuestComicDubFamily I have the exact opposite impression. I liked T'Pol and felt Tuvok was a flanderized version of a Vulcan. Blalock did a good job of portraying a maelstrom of emotions repressed under a sometimes tenuous philosophical framework. Spock has some humor because he's comfortable in his career and with Humans. T'Pol is originally not, and then later on uncomfortable with the fact that she's grown comfortable. T'Pol is one of two characters I actually like about Enterprise and is usually the reason I rewatch the series.

Many commenters here don’t seem to realize the historical basis for this conversation. In the early days of this show, Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the series, envisioned the Enterprise like a navel vessel in the nineteenth century far at sea, on their own. The dialogue is built on that...Spock’s reference to the mining operation on Rigel 12, “high grade ore, I hear” is what he would have said about word of a gold strike in the early 1800’s. Think about it: why would he “hear” about a mining operation on Rigel? One would assume that there would be no need for rumors in the future, when information about the mining operation would be readily available. Even Kirk’s line “Make for Rigel 12” is how a sea captain would have expressed it centuries ago. The dialogue here was explicitly written to convey this idea, and it is very well delivered here.

@@michaellaplant8659 IMHO, it seems that studios, writers and producers think that space battles sell movies more than good old fashioned scifi drama. Studios tend to want blockbusters and they also tend to think that flashy action is where the money is. Seems that nobody wants to go back to the old days of Trek, even Trek 4: The Voyage Home, where it was the story, drama and even comedy that made good productions rather than flashy special effects. If you can shoot energy beams and torpedoes and blow stuff up then it's got to be written into the script. Scripts without that tend to get passed on and that's a real shame. There's no telling how many good scripts are out there just waiting for someone to take a chance on.
