I forgot to mention this in the episode but at some point a local reporter noticed all of Spreckels' good deeds for san diego also conveniently involved paying Spreckels to use the service, to which he angrily shot back with "I'm a businessman, not a santa claus!" Which given the name of his dad is extremely funny to me.

Another funny Spreckels fact: The other Spreckels brother controlling the rest of the sugar fortune back in San Francisco, Adolph, married a much younger sculpture model. She transformed society by referring to him as her “sugar daddy”

I'm a union electrician in San Francisco. Twice I have worked doing "tenant improvement" at Twitter (before the Musk supremacy). The second time I was tasked with laying out new linear lights which the architects had for some insane reason decided needed to be at a 40° angle to the general building layout. Not 45°, not the normal parallel/perpendicular layout, but 40°. The only reason I can figure for this is as some sort of test. Anyway, Twitter was not exactly run by the sane before Musk, I can only guess what that job would've been like today.

I don't know if anyone remembers that game that used to come on old PCs called Ski Free where you were a little skiing person who had to maneuver in and around trees and other obstacles and jump the occasional jump in the course, then if you kept skiing after the finish line, an abominable snowman would come and eat your little character. Anyway, I had a cat who LOVED that game and would sit next to the computer monitor so she could bat at the trees as they went up the screen. I used to play it a lot because it was funny to watch her try to catch the trees on the screen and I would restart the game by pressing one of the F buttons (don't remember which one anymore) because it was the quickest way to start a new game and keep my cat's attention. One time, when I had been playing this game with the cat, I had to go to the bathroom but I just left the program on because I was going to come back and play it with the cat some more if she hadn't lost interest. When I came back from the bathroom, I noticed that the cat was playing the game herself so I waited for the abominable snowman to come out and the eat the character at the end to see what the cat would do. As it turned out, my cat had seen me hit whichever F button it was to restart the game, plus she had gathered that you had to move the computer's mouse to get the skier to go down the screen and therefore for the trees to go up the screen so she had been starting the game herself while I was in the bathroom. I watched her do it several times before I decided to give her a treat for being so smart. It sure was surprising and funny!

46:47 There's a holding tank (probably water for irrigation or something) at the east end of El Centro that has "Sea Level" and a line painted halfway up the side. The tank is about where the "E" in El Centro is in the image.

San Diego has one of the few extant goth scenes in America. Some of the same clubs have been running since the 90s. Plus, great hiking, beaches, architecture and the zoos are 1st rate. Really a fantastic town. Visit it.

Thank you for reading my story, now maybe my healing can begin and I don't have to freeze and stare into the middle distance every time I remember it. I 1000% did the slasher movie thing. I'm now doing asphalt testing in various labs where all I have to worry about is silicosis and any further idiocy will only result in minor burns. Still love the show and yall and still hope you have a good summer

0:21:45 That’s exactly what happened to my little town in Louisiana. The original town sat where the cemetery is still today with the old church house, but the railroad ran several miles in the other direction. So it’s ‘Old Town’ and ‘Town’ with the railroad tracks replaced by ‘Rails to Trails’ nowadays.

The other day my mom referenced the upcoming Zuck/Musk smooth-brain contest as a "fight to the death" and I was like _oh god please let it be an actual fight to the death that would be amazing._ Celebrity Deathmatch needs to come back but it needs to be Billionaire Deathmatch; it would be so cathartic to see Charles Koch beat Charles Munger to death with a folding chair only to be splattered by Bill Gates on a suicidal high dive. Popcorn stuff.

As a native San diegan, I can tell you the truth about our weather is that it is frustratingly stable. Whatever weather is going on now will continue to be that way for the foreseeable future. Right now, random light showers that have been going on for almost a week. Next up, the sun will boil everyone alive until the end of October. Sometimes we'll have weird heavy cloud cover for days at a time. It's never predictable and at the same time, constant.
