I met a group of UCLA students doing charity work in Africa. We were getting along great and I was explaining some of the problems that the locals had. Then my Kenyan wife showed up. One of them said "something something appropriation" and the next thing I knew, the whole group turned hostile. It was at that moment that I realized their whole trip was about virtue signaling, not about helping people.

Had an ex-GF like this. I didn't catch it at first, but as time when on she couldn't stop virtue signaling about how she volunteered to teach kids English in Thailand or how she took pictures with tigers or whatever. And how she was so "different" than the other spoiled rich kids on her trip who were bad, according to her. When I pointed out that although she wasn't as rich as those kids, she'd likely taken a local's teaching job, that the tiger she took pics with was heavily sedated for her and 99 other people to take pictures with, and that the main difference between her and the other kids was basically that she waited to post her pics on Instagram after she came back to the US from the trip in a "photo dump" style, she got so upset. She said she was helping the world, in spite of me pointing out how exactly she hadn't helped, but likely hindered, she just couldn't handle it. Eventually, this kept happening over and over with different places she'd traveled until one day I just said, "I'm from another country. How do you think it makes me feel when you essentially fetishize travel to go fix the problems of poor brown people? I know it's not what you think you're doing, but it is. Pat yourself on the back all you want, but you didn't help anybody but your own ego." Needless to say, that relationship didn't work out 😂😂

Thank you for speaking the truth to her. Someone needs to tell these ppl, they have no self awareness and their egos are so big it gets in the way of their judgement. Or atleast I hope most don't know what they're doing and the impact it has, I'm sure some do but don't care; which makes it even worse, if it's possible to be more insufferable than they already are.

Mother Teresa is actually a fake public figure, look into the details of what she had done in India in the name of charity in some well documented videos on this platform. She basically used the poor and starving in the Bengal region of India for spreading Christianity and promoting missionaries. i can't type all the details but some of her major problems were that she and her organization had no medical expertise and she used to treat poor sick people by asking untrained nuns to administer their drugs (which led to the death of people who could be easily cured) and she would hand bibles to people with stage 4 cancer and forced them to pray. As i said there are videos on this platform that have documented here fake public image and other malpractices.

I never look up to people who do charity work or donate money to strangers in need. I look up to people who help their family and friends, especially when it's difficult for them to lend a helping hand rather than when they do so to feel good about themselves. I used to teach English in Thailand, not as a volunteer. I was there for a few years and one of the poorer schools in my town relied on volunteers. They would frequently not have enough and my school, a private school, would always ask if I could go there a few times during the day. I always did, I normally just sat around doing nothing in between classes. The amount that school told me they paid for an agency to get volunteers was like 3 times what I was making, and I made a lot compared to the Thai teachers. I helped them start a permanent position and hire teachers long term. Seemed to work out for them.

I went on one mission trip to the Dominican Republic as a kid. I can assure that most people aren't going for a free vacation, it wasn't fun nor laid out to be. We slept on bunks and lived in a poor area. I wasn't trying to get a "free vacation", I actually internally did not want to go at all. The motive was the idea that I could HELP people. I wasn't virtue signaling, but I'm positive that some people on the trip were. Regardless, even those people gave their helping hand. We made a water purification well for a town of people that didn't have close access to clean water. Also, we set up a makeshift hospital with real doctors who gave out tons of medication and performed basic procedures and care. We did so much more, and the locals were involved in everything. The leader of the foundation aren't wealthy businessmen either, they go on all the missions. Anyway, my main point is that many missions actually create lasting positive impacts, not everyone is a narcissistic virtue signaler, and that this new woke notion that mission trips are evil is mostly the opposite of the truth.

God dammit one of the main reasons why people started going on these missions was because curropt governments didn't do or couldn't do anything to help the locals, and the locals are more focused on basic survival over everything! my ex was on this and i explained this reality too her and even brought up how the company she travelled with is just as bad. Well it was a red flag of what virtue signaling and moral licensing she was and even had one huge etnocentric perspective on how too help other cultures and people which disgusted me because it really proved the naive and pure ignorance of her. She was obviously only doing this for herself

They should pass a law that forces people who are, 'choosing to volunteer', to have to stay at the country for a minimum of 30 days, and then have them quarantine for at least a week upon arrival. I'd love to see who actually wants to help.

First of all I would develop a skill which could be really helpful. With that you can be sure to bring a worth with you. To find the right place you’ll probably need connections, just try to ask people you know that they know a lot of people as well, if they know someone who really changes something. Another option could be something like worldpackers, but here I would also be careful. Red flags for me are if you have to pay money (you want to pay with your work) as well as when they don’t check your qualifications. Also if you really want to help don’t go just for a short time and ones, get to know the culture and become a member of their community so you can really understand the problems they have. I hope this helps a little :D

@@jonaskonrad1104 agreed! Learn a valuable skill such as Civil Engineering, or Electrical Engineering (Or even some other in demand skill such as Supply Chain Management) Then go over there and help work on projects to improve their infrastructure, and other such areas where your skills will help the country. I'm doing that at the moment, working towards my Masters in Computer Science so that I can go teach in North Korea.

Yes. I read an article about a woman who after seeing girls being used in brothels in India decided her life calling is setting up a school in India for them. Suppose to help them to find jobs but I don't see how that actually save girls from being sold by their families to prositution.

Is anyone honestly shocked that someone has figured out a way to exploit two diametrically opposing classes? How ignorant must these tourists be to not ask ...if this volunteer project has been going on for X-time frame, why is there no improvement? Where are the accomplishments of those who here previously? I guess the real tragedy is the growing demise of common sense and the ability for a person to think.
