My home town :) My GG grandmother arrived at Wellington on board the ship "The London" in 1842 so my roots are firmly ingrained in that city. I no longer live there but I still think of it as home. As a kid I attended the opening of the bucket fountain in Cuba Street in 1969!

When I visited NZ several years ago, I decided that *should* I ever win the lottery and be able to pick a place to move to, it would be Wellington. A civilized yet adventurous vibe, all the comforts, a reasonable and rational approach to governance ...and the climate! Perfect. Now, just gotta win the lottery so my dream can come true!!! Wellington looks like the perfect place to live. The arts scene of Melbourne mixed with the scenery of Vancouver, in a smaller city that's easier to get around, giving it a more communal feeling. The weather is also mild too which makes it even better.
@jc7436 Жыл бұрын
it's not easier to get around, unless you already live in/near CBD. Melbourne's public transport network is extensive and much easier to use than Wellington's bus network. Agree on the scenery though, although Vancouver's looks far more impressive (I've never been). I wouldn't consider the weather 'mild' unless your definition of mild is the windiest metropolitan area in the world and lots of rain. i

Absolutely loved this video. So Wellington! Thank you! There are heaps of hidden gems throughout the city. It's really interesting to start at Parliament & follow the trail to see how much of the city is built on reclaimed land. You can go into the BNZ centre (I think that's the location) to see where the ocean once came to and the bones of early ships beneath your feet. Heritage walks in the city really are super interesting. You could also go see a great show at Circa or Bats or the St James. Thanks again for the great video!

I can highly recommend op shopping and eating in Miramar, visiting the Brooklyn wind turbine and historic bunker walk (there's also an easy MTB trail that goes up adjacent to the road), the Island Bay shops and beach, and of course the waterfront near Te Papa. I lived in Wellington for a few years but left because of the exorbitant housing costs, crappy flats and overwhelming traffic. Thankfully it looks like the council has finally started getting its shit together and turning streetside parking into bus and bike lanes, investing in better transit and importantly, integrating the bus service from the airport with the rest of the network as well as making payment more convenient. I cursed myself by depending on owning a car like a typical Christchurch boy, but despite the rather cramped streets it's still a great place to walk, bus or ride an electric bike around the hills. Hoping that in the future Welly will retain its urbanist charm and continue to make the city better for people, not cars. Affordability of housing is really important in that regard, because more and more people are moving to the outer suburbs for cheaper rent and have little choice but to drive.

It’s got some nice features to be sure but on the whole Wellington is a drab gloomy place and very overpriced. Very soggy sort of vibe. One of the truly endearing qualities Wellington had was its trolley buses. They gave the place a charm and nice clean public transport. But they took these away in favor of smoke belching diesel buses. I mean what city in this day and age when clean transport is in high demand, takes such a huge step backward?
