How to substitute yarn in patterns. I get really excited for a pattern, and try to knit it with my stash yarn (even gauge swatch it to check!) but it always comes out wonky and not the right size… is there a way around this? Should you just buy the recommended yarn, or is there a better way to check? Another beginner mistake is seeing different textured yarn in the shop, not knowing they could be a nightmare for a beginner to knit with! Think furry or fluffy yarns, or weird acrylics. So tempting! But not the way…

Very helpful, easy to understand corrections. Just one suggestion; the purple yarn is pretty dark and makes it hard to see what you’re doing. Thanks!

I don't know if you ever did a Blocking 101, but would love to see a in depth video on it. Right now I'm still afraid to block anything hahaha

I've experienced back/wrist pain while knitting before. I've realized that stretching before/during/after knitting actually helps especially if you know you will be knitting for a long time. Love your videos ❤️

I talked to a chiropractic doctor about this and he told me to try and use a chair with arm rest so I’m not holding my arms up and overworking the muscle, it can also help to sit straight and not bend your back and or neck so much looking down. Stretching and taking breaks definitely helps!!

Hi from Texas. I attempt not to knit when I am too tired because I really want to enjoy the journey. I enjoy knitting, sewing and reading. It is my therapy. Thank you for sharing.

Alternative lifeline method: If your using interchangeable needles you can also use the little hole that you tighten them with to thread fishing line or dental floss and then knit as usual across and your lifeline goes in as you knit. Especially helpful if you’ve got several hundred stitches that you would otherwise have to individually collect with a darning needle.

This was so beautifully produced! I’m a beginner, and I’ve definitely done most of these! Great, super clear instructions and tutorials. Also, the fact that you are wearing your cardigan no. 7 that I swatched today! So excited to cast on tomorrow!! Giving my ultimate inspiration. Thanks Bethany!!! 🙌

Thank you for this. I’ve knitted quite a lot but make tons of mistakes. Most experienced knitters want to just fix my mistakes for me rather than teaching how to do it myself.

Thanks for this! My issues as a person who is a long time beginner...with both knitting and crochet I drop/add stitches like crazy especially on the ends of rows I just get confused. I also have such a hard time making a first row of 1×1 knit/purl, it prevents me from getting so many projects started.

Your videos helped me so much! I usually crochet, because my first attempts at knitting (around 8 years ago) were horrid. If you made a bingo chart from all these mistakes, I would get at least two bingo lines haha Now, after many of your videos and podcasts, I'm already halfway on the yoke of my first handknit sweater and I'm so happy! I try not to get mad at myself because my knitting is much slower than my crocheting and I feel like I'm ready to try knitting socks once I'm done with my sweater 💙

Hi Bethany, I really enjoy your videos! I haven't been knitting for very long, so videos like this are really helpful. Somehow I always have problems with my lifelines. I either turn out to have split my yarn somewhere, or just have trouble seeing if my pattern is working out as it should in the area around the lifeline! I have struggled with Repetitive Strain Injury for years, so I probably should never have started knitting (now I'm addicted, so it's too late 😉 ). I'm a English knitter, and for me this turned out to be really painful in my left hand, as that's where I was carrying the most weight a lot of the time. My wrists also hurt knitting English style on straight needles. It helped me to learn more of a flicking motion, so I don't have to let go of my right needle all the time. I also find circular needles distribute the weight more evenly than straight ones. It's such a relief to have found this out, as I was terrified I'd have to give up knitting. Hopefully now I'll be able to knit for many years to come!🧶

I have found sleeping with a wrist brace helps mitigate some of the pain, and at least helps prevent it from spilling over into the next day. Also, keeping the bulk of the weight of what your working on in your lap helps as well. For me, this means lowering my hands near my lap when I'm knitting instead of keeping them higher up like how you would when doing embroidery. But especially remembering to take lots and lots of breaks with heavier yarns is a huge help.

I wish this video existed when I started knitting 3 years ago and was so confused about the random holes in my very first scarf :D I made all of these mistakes! And I just realized that the holes around my raglan increases are a mistake haha. Lovely video as always!!

A lifeline is pretty easy to add to rows below the needles as well, at least if you're working in stockinette! Probably not the best to add in the middle of a lace pattern, but I accidentally dropped a few stitches while knitting socks a while back, added a lifeline two or three rows back and frogged. Then add the stitches on the lifeline back on your needles.

That is from wool and the gang! It’s aubergine or eggplant. Not sure if it’s available anymore, but worth a shot!

what do you do when you've made mistakes in the pattern and those mistakes go back 6 rows? I did this on the border on a blanket. Do I have to unravel and start over?

I think I did a y/o and had a hole but how do you fix it? I frogged the whole project starting over. My first time making a sweater. Where is the tutorial for the sweater you’re wearing? I like it. Please respond, thank you😅.

I should really get into a habit of inserting a lifeline, especially when I start doing colourwork on a circular yoke in a sweater pattern. Something I really realized during my current project (an Icelandic sweater) when I made a mistake repeatedly in the beginning of the colourwork pattern on the yoke, was then too lazy to tink back half-a-round and then made another mistake few rounds later, was too lazy to fix that and now I'm considering frogging the colourwork and starting over. Without a lifeline. The other option would be to continue as is and then after finishing just imitate those mistake stitches with a darning needle - which also works but it doesn't look as nice as one yarn is much darker than the other and the lighter yarn doesn't completely cover the darker one... I'm already about halfway done with the yoke, so it'd be a lot of frogging. Such a beginner mistake to make (I'm an experienced knitter, even though this is my fourth sweater, I've been knitting for over a decade) and I think I'm def gonna use a lifeline going forward.
