Of note - in modern use, the guys who had to watch the bearings as the train rolled by have now been replaced with a hotbox detector mounted on the track that scans each axle with an infrared detector as the train rolls by at speed, then radios a message to the train crew.

At least thats my understanding of the course of events. although the real heart of the problem is that decades of overworked, unerpayed, and shorthanded staff just led to workers not have the time or resources to do proper maintenance checks to make sure a bad car never leaves the yard in the first place.

Pennsy loved the P70s so much they basically used them for any type of coach service. Broiler was a "budget dining car" used for services that were too long to not warrant an on-board dining option, but not long enough to warrant a full dining car. They had 2 that were rebuilt from the original P70s in 1935. I can't find anything in my books other than their general purpose for existing.

I'd like to point out that the Volkswagen is not a Nazi idea at all: The idea of a small people's car, as well as its initial designs, were actually concieved by Josef Ganz, but the Nazis were reluctant to attribute the idea to him as he was jewish. They were also rather reluctant to actually finish any of the ordered designs: The actual Volkswagen Beetle that a lot of germans paid for before the war would only start production in 1946. It turns out that a lot of the Nazi ideas and cultural output was just taking other people's stuff and plastering Hakenkreuzen over it. To an absurd degree! I've seen fucking dinner tables and floors that have hakenkreuz patterns it's fucking silly. The autobahn, similarily, were built on plans by the Weimar republic. Incidentally, for the lovers of the Safety Third Reich: The typical Stahlhelm was supposed to be replaced by the helmet that the east german army would go on to use, but Hitler rejected it because it wasn't "iconic" enough.

Also, here is a little story from the field of railroads that connects to the Nazis' scrubbing of Josef Ganz from VW history. With the Rail Zeppelin, the Fliegender Hamburger fast diesel railcars, and the high-speed steam locomotives of series 05 (probably faster than the official record holder Mallard by a hair but that's another story), early Nazi-era German railways had this image of cutting-edge modernity. But the reality was that Reichsbahn was hampered both by Hitler's focus on the Autobahn and a conservative chief locomotive designer not open to new ideas. This man (Richard Paul Wagner) was responsible for popularising long boilers in Europe. But his designs work best on long runs on flat terrain, and he totally ignored the development of large fireboxes (rooms for fire to burn out in front of the part where smoke passing along long tubes heats the water), which are efficient and help in case of any extra load. In power, all of Wagner's designs were behind expectations (especially his last, the series 06, a 2'D2' or for North Americans 4-8-4 Northern). In addition, when going for welded technology, he chose a bad brittle steel quality that led to boiler explosions. Now let's move ahead, to Germany invading Poland. Of course, Polish locomotives and locomotive factories were taken over by German railways. To their surprise, German engineers found that one type in particular, the Pt31 express locomotive, was vastly superior to any of Wagner's designs. Facing a shortage in the "home countries" during the war, the Pt31 were soon sent over to Austria and parts of Germany, and more were built under Nazi control. However, this presented a propaganda problem: they didn't want the German populace to see that the inferior Slavic peoples could build something so clearly superior. The solution was to replace the original Polish factory plates on the locomotives with fake German ones (the locomotive number plates were replaced anyway, Pt31 becoming Reichsbahn series 19.1). (EDIT: in an earlier version of this comment, I mixed up the Pt31 with the Pm36, a faster but lighter series with only two locomotives built. These, too, had a good design and were taken by Reichsbahn, one of them used for testing.)

On the Facebook thing, basically, they accidentally told the internet (more specifically, DNS routing) that the Facebook servers no longer exist. This would normally be very easy to fix, you just then tell the internet that your servers exist again. But the command to do that is on software RUN ON THE FACEBOOK SERVERS. Which, of course, means it can't be remotely accessed because the server is down. And, again normally, this is annoying, but not too bad, you just have to physically go in and reset the servers. But LITERALLY EVERYTHING is run on the Facebook servers. Including almost every door in the buildings and definitely every lock in the buildings. So no employee could reach the servers physically either. The end result of this was that Facebook had to fly over a special team armed with lockpicking tools and "hard lockpicking tools" (ie an angle grinder) to finally get access to their server cage and restart their servers.

So, FB deleted their BGP routes. What is that you ask? BGP is how routers figure out how to get from point A to B. While DNS tells you WHERE point A or B is, BGP tells your router how to get there like Google Maps tells you how to get somewhere. After deleting their BGP routes, nobody could find out how to get to their Datacenter's and their routers. Effectively, as you said, deleting them from the internet.

The real kicker is *HOW* the BGP routes ended up deleted. Essentially, someone made a *DNS* change with a typo in it. The tool that was supposed to prevent that specific catastrophic typo from being executed had a bug and therefore didn't function, and as a result their internal DNS blew the hell up. Separately, they have an automated BGP management system that watches overall network health and if it detects a catastrophic network health problem, drops the datacenter's BGP out, effectively causing a whole-datacenter outage to isolate the damage. This DNS problem counted as a catastrophic health problem - and was global. So each datacenter got dropped out one by one over the course of about ten minutes until they were all gone. Which, yes, rendered their DNS servers unreachable. To go with the stupid car analogy... DNS is street signs. BGP is roads. Someone fucked up the street signs and the DOT overreacted by demolishing the roads. Including the road to the street sign factory. And the DOT depot.

[Timestamp 1:01] It's interesting that Alice pointed out how many rail accidents happen around troop movement, and Justin said it's likely because of increased overall railroad activity to support the military. I saw an article a day or two ago (can't remember where, sorry) that was about the Pentagon's recent assessment of rail network readiness. Rail is still an important way the US military moves equipment and troops around the continent, especially equipment too heavy or large for road and highways. And the Pentagon report is.... pretty damn scary. Both rail segments owned and operated by private companies, and those run exclusively by the military, are in terrible condition. The report is pretty clear that if we had to deploy a lot of assets for an emergency military situation across the continent, the system would fail in multiple places. That's how much the US congress just hates rail, they won't even fund it for national defense.

Re: jeggings, the stretchy denim kinda rules. I'm skinny as hell but tend to sit criss cross apple sauce style and my skinny jeans would blow out at the crotch pretty quick. The stretch has a lot more give. They're also generally softer. I am pro denim though, I have a cool Jean jacket and vest and two whole pairs of pants, as well as auxiliary cutoffs on the rare event that it's warm. Anyway, jeggings are pretty swell in my opinion

At the risk of drawing the ire of Liam: (LORD LIAM BE MERCIFUL)- Amtrak Montana derailment happened *Before* the switch. This was a hot day, only a few degrees from the temperature related speed reduction rules being triggered. Also, this switch is controlled from Ft Worth, TX. My suspicion is that the track failed under the train and the third car from the end derailed, it wandered far enough from center, and tipped over. The last three cars are further back, and were on their sides.

Fun coincidence. Im listening to this episode just now after I have been working all afternoon in Unreal 5 with some horror/creepy themed projects for Halloween. It is for sure a totally amazing software and I love that its freely avaible for everyone to use! U can create just anything from your imagination with it! In your case a thing to create with it would maybee be something like a disaster simulator wich could simulate said train wreck or whatever disaster from your series. All is possible! I dont know if u have any experience using UE or any other game engine. There is however loads of tutorials though if u want to say try and create said disaster simulator or something similar with Unreal5. (The tutorials for UE4 btw also work for UE5) Id love to see u make something like that! :)

​@@Whammytap I didn't know about aspirin - I'll look it up. Thank you. Mengele did some testing which involved 'drowning' and reviving teenage girls. I believe about 40 girls were used for this particular experiment in which one girl happened to be 'drowned'/revived over 40 times. All the girls were subsequently executed. These experiments weren't drowning the girls rather they were testing their endurance/resistance to hypothermia in cold-water/salt-water tanks. The Luftwaffe had requested information on the effects of 'ditching' on air crews and this 'problem' ended up on Mengele's desk. One of the tactics the RAF used engaging the Luftwaffe over Britain was fuel exhaustion, which led to forced ditching (as well as battle damage). Hence, ironically enough, one of the few sets of work that had any scientific merit, conducted by that ruthless, despicable bastard. Today, similar work is conducted with volunteers who are typically students in a wholly different context - heart monitors, medical care etc. It is worth noting though that AFAIK the only change to the 'rescue protocol' between the 1940s and today is that they don't allow the victim to walk as this puts a tremendous strain on the heart. I learnt about Aspirin today (thanks for telling me) but before this, I thought the only good (aside from accelerated technology development - which we would have got anyway; such as radar and jet engines) was this 'rescue protocol'. The building of the Atlantic wall, rebuilding of the Dams, all the weaponry, the direct loss of life, the rebuilding due to direct bomb damage - the incidental harm: hunger, disease, rape and the criminality (i.e. 'confiscation' of property) was all utterly pointless. However, EVERY time I see a rescue helicopter, or hear of the RNLI working I think of these girls and their suffering (and murder) and realise that the knowledge gained has actually saved lives. Of course we would have got to this knowledge eventually and of course what Mengele did was disgusting (and he deserves to rot in hell). I mention it only in that, directly, from the murderous concentration camps it's the only thing that has actually saved lives. Incidentally there was a train accident in 1946(?) in NW London that actually occurred more or less at a station. Ironically enough there was a US Army Doctor there. He actually set up a triage/casualty clearing station for the injured which helped many victims to survive. This (despite the blitz, which was 'scoop and run') was the first time treatment had been done as in effect paramedic in a civilian context. This later became a template for an improved London Ambulance Service/A&E service.

The last major North American train wreck caused by a failed plain bearing was in Mississauga, Ontario in 1979. Several tank cars of dangerous chemicals caught fire, and a leaking tank car of chlorine forced much of the city to be evacuated. Fortunately no one was killed. The last big fleets of freight equipment with them were the 40' Canadian grain boxcars (used until fall 1996) and DMIR's old ore jennies, some of which ran with plain bearings into the early 2000s (some are still in service with roller bearings inside the old journal boxes, with the lids removed). Some big railroads still have work equipment with plain bearings, even Canadian Pacific still has a bunch of auxiliary equipment (including several 250-ton hooks) out in British Columbia with them. If properly maintained and lubricated plain bearings can give good service, and they are actually better for low speed low mileage service where the equipment sits still for long periods of time (like museums or tourist railroads). Roller bearing equipment needs to be moved regularly or spalling can occur inside the bearing, and when a roller bearing fails there is no way to repair it, you have to replace that wheelset. If caught early an overheating plain bearing can be repacked in a few minutes. I just found your podcast the other day and have listened to several episodes already. I'm quickly becoming a fan, and I'm really looking forward to the 'Galloping Gertie' episode!

Hey Liam, as a fellow denim disliker, I found out that being particular about how stuff feels on your skin can actually be a symptom of ADHD, which makes a hell of a lot of sense (for me anyway.) So because I must knee jerk reply to the news since I am Online: The DNS didn't go down, since that's a thing that could be fixed in five minutes. The guy who was selling that story turns out he was using it to sell his own Gamers Only social network. So the DNS pitch was an easy way to get his own take in and pick up some followers and thus customers. From my own spurious sources, I have heard there may have been a bot in the FB system that automatically does maintenance that went haywire and nuked shit but for all I know that's also a epic prank. Carry on, mostly wanted to say the DNS guy was selling his own social from this

It looks like it actually was a DNS issue, specifically they nuked their own BGP routes. Those get cached with ISPs and stuff, so while the actual work to fix it was likely fairly quick, it probably just took a few hours for the fix to propagate Which tracks with the stories about the electronic doors not working, if they were real. I could maybe see a bad maintenance script taking out FB *OR* IG *OR* WhatsApp, but not everything including the door locks. A similar thing happened with a Turkish ISP in like 2004, but instead of breaking their own BGP routes, they accidentally published routes saying they were basically the most optimal carrier in the world for every site and basically a huge chunk of the world's internet started routing itself through a little Turkish ISP for a day lmao However I 100% believe that there was also a guy talking about it while trying to sell a gamers-only social network, that's the most on-brand Twitter thing ever Edit: I tried making another reply but it's not showing up for some reason, apparently it was a maintenance error which ended up causing the BGP issue lmao. The facebook blog ended up putting a post out about it

Seconding this, boot cut jeans are the only good jeans. In the 70s there were flare jeans which were truly excellent because it was like the mid-way point between boot cut and JNCO jeans. Naturally, flare jeans no longer exist, because we have angered God.
