I definitely felt this message. Someone i know was asking for hair tips so i asked what she did. She only shampooed and combs her hair dry. I told her what i did (deep condition, shampoo and style) she said it was too much and that my hair grew because of genetics and she has bad genes. I was like "why ask for tips if you'll just say that". It's very annoying because it makes it seem like you didn't have to work for what you have when in actuality you did.

I’ve been natural over 10 years and my hair is just about shoulder length. stretched it is longer but compared to other naturals it’s short. I’ve given up on this idea that long natural hair is a given for everyone it’s not. I know how to take care of my hair because I’ve been researching for 8 years, I have all my health checks And I’m eating health. I genetically have natural low density hair and no magic miracle cure is gonna change that. I’ve checked all my pictures as a child to teen to adulthood. I embrace what I have and that way more important.
@brittanywilliams86535 жыл бұрын
For the most part, black women just started knowing how to care for our natural hair. If you look at the natural hair journeys on KZbin, you see that most originally had short damaged hair. Where were their genetics then? It's only when they started caring for their hair did it really start to grow long. I just find it funny that people will scream genetics when someone has long hair but completely gloss over how that person's hair was short and damaged at the beginning of their hair journey and only got better with patience, time, and care.

I so agree with you regarding not forgetting the work that goes into retaining length. My genetic rate of hair growth is 1/8-1/4 inch a month, but due to me massaging my scalp daily, I've broken the code and now I'm growing and retaining 1/2-1 inch a month. Yay effort !!
@isi.48005 жыл бұрын
It's been 2 years and my hair is at mid back length. Genetics did help not gonna lie but my routine is extremely fine tuned. I eat extremely healthy and i exercise every day. I notice that anytime i don't exercise as often, my hair growth isn't as fast. A lot of people don't trim, don't eat the essential nutrients for hair groth and just don't even know how to do their hair properly. Chalking it down to genetics downplays the actual work you had to do and honestly, gives reason to not hold oneself accountable because you could just easily say "my hair is like this because of genetics. Oh well" without having to address what you might not been doing.

The only things that give you length are: patience, no trimming all of your growth off as hair "only" grows about 6 inches a year, and good hair care practices. Hair type does not matter in the least! I see so many people trim every month and take half an inch off, that's all the growth you grew that month!

How often do you reccommend trimming?
@amixeblu5 жыл бұрын
@@Penelope416 I can't say; it really depends on the state of your hair, whether or not you use heat on it a lot or not, or are relaxed or not. I would trim a tad more then. But when I was still growing out my hair to classic (over the bum) length, I trimmed once a year, if that, and just took splits out one by one when I came across them, if I came across them. Now that I am maintaining my length I do 2 bigger trims a year and a couple smaller ones in between, but this is no longer to gain length as I'm not growing it out more. So it depends on what your goals are. Short natural hair is pretty too!

I totally agree with this love!!! I always get the opposite...people be thinking I have some magical products or techniques I use that I don’t wanna share with others, to make my hair grow as fast and as long as it does. And I always tell them for me personally it IS majority genetics. I’ve always been good at taking care of my hair, even when it was relaxed. HOWEVER, I’ve had and admittedly still have my moments where I don’t. And my hair hair still thrives, still grows. And THAT is definitely attributed to my genetics. And because I prefer HEALTHY hair over length I’ve never had a problem cutting it. I can’t stand split/see through ends and will cut 4 inches off in a minute without a second thought!

. Genetics refers to approximately how much your hair will grow a month 1/4 inch 1/2 inch etc. Length retention is what will actually get the length. My best friend her, her little sister, and her moms hair grow faster than white peoples hair and they are black but literally they can not take care of their hair and It will go from shoulder length to butt length in about 6 months. Me on the other hand my hair needs to be protective styled to even see growth and will only get half the growth. But eventually I can get there I just need more work since my growth is not extremely fast. Everyone can grow hair it just may take more work and more time. This is why I love doing hair I think it’s soooo amazing .

Great video. Love your hair. My take on it is that genetics does play a part like you stated yes. Let's also get into the fact that its scientifically proven that, eg, asians have more sealed hair shafts in terms of how fixed the protein bonds are on their cuticle, due to the arrangement of the proteins on the cuticle and how tight they are packed. Also their straight her will be less manipulated because it tangles less, and black hair spirals up and detangling causes more manipulation so that's my take on genetics. Different races have genetically proven to have different protein arrangement. But like you said, taking care of your hair still wins in terms of length retention. My hair right now is the longest its ever been since I've started caring for it better, so I absolutely agree with you. I have high porosity hair so my cuticles naturally open quickly, or raise quickly which makes my hair prone to breakage. However knowing ny porosity was a game changer because it allowed me to know what would help to seal my cuticle, like butters, creams and heavy oils. After I learned this, i started retaining more hair than I ever have. Inspite of genetics being a factor, learning how to care properly for your hair is the way to go.

Genetics does have some significance in hair growth. My sister and I have the same parents, her hair is the most beautiful of all of us and thick, mine is fine, both our hair grew long but hers always retained length, my edges were always weak, her were always strong, when we would get braids, her hairstyles lasted, and mine frizzed up. However, as I got older, I saw what grew my hair. I HAVE to deep condition, I take vitamins, and I use rice water and I’m seeing my hair grow very fast!
@daisiesandpandas12183 жыл бұрын
Genetics only plays a role if all human beings were forced to take care of their hair the same way. It's like making fish, elephants, a dog and a snail compete in a swimming race and then grading then by how they swim. Instead of grading then in the environment they were all suited for. And as you realised, hair care practices are not set in stone, genetics is not the determining factor it is us adjusting our hair care practices. Now your hair is long too, the end result is the same and your genetics did not retain the long hair, you did.

@PUNKGIRLrock245 жыл бұрын
It might just be your hair type. If you have fine and looser strands the hair gets weigh down when gets longer and appears thinner (alot people get layers to fix it). Also making sure hair has equal amount of protein/moisture and not breaking off.
@2damecuteUK5 жыл бұрын
Depend on you hair, do you have low medium or high density? This will be a very big factor in retention! What the thickness of your strands Fine medium or coarse? This is important for determining what tools work or don’t for your hair. Porosity does your hair retain moisture and absorb products straight away or need time to absorb? The endz of your hair is alway the thinnest weakest part of your hair strands so that why you seal the endz with oil. You could cover the ends of your hair which will keep it away from the elements. My advice is introduce more leafy greens (protein rich) into your diet Kale, spinach, broccoli (smoothie) and Almonds. You should see a difference in thickness after a month through your diet. I hope that helped

@luvfeelinpretty5 жыл бұрын
2damecuteUK what about it? In relation to genetics? Yes, that definitely is hereditary but not growing your hair out. That has nothing to do with genetics.
@2damecuteUK5 жыл бұрын
Curls& Culture because although the hair may grow longer it won’t grow thicker, thus you would still have to cut and layer the hair more often to make it look thicker (illusion of thickness). If your hair is thin fine or low density that simply what it is genetically. I’m speaking from my own experience 10 years plus of learning about my own natural hair. Your hair is what it is the methods, tools and routine are for good consistency for up keep but won’t tell you about the things that truly affect you length retention or thinning as the hair gets longer. Density, strand thickness, porosity, protein moisture balance, ph balance,tenton , over styling, stress, hormone imbalance, vitamin deficiency, allergies These are only a few bits of information you would have to research.
@luvfeelinpretty5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree with this, I too have fine hair and have been natural for 15+ years. I used to desire thicker hair and a different curl pattern. After learning my hair and understanding how to appreciate its great qualities and how to make it work with and for me. I have grown to love my hair for what it is. The key is to learn your hair, understand it and not just grow it long but keep it healthy. Learning your hair porosity and how to maintain its health, like keeping it moisturized and elastic, free from heat damage, etc. will help to grow it in the long run. Yes you may have to layer it or create ways to manipulate so that it appears thicker but that comes with the territory of learning to love your hair. There are some great things to love about fine hair.

I find that the same people saying “Genetics! Genetics! I’m a slow grower!” Are the same people getting relaxer and color touch ups every 6 weeks like clockwork 😞🤦🏾♀️🤣 Growth IS NOT retention. Not only that, but I think about the numerous straight haired people who have LONG raggedy hair. Nobody is complimenting raggedy length. And quality of hair is in the same bucket as length retention.

Hi your hair and skin are beautiful. The song that you started with is from my country Trinidad and Tobago. Lovely song. My hair is grey and black l used to dye my hair but l stop and the grey in my hair is about three inches or more. Is that new growth and does that mean my hair is growing. I use grease, water and oil moisturizer and deep conditioners is that alright to use.

Your hair came out amazing again! I am sorry, but the genetics in my family include fine, thin, brittle hair that won't grow past shoulder length. From Protective styles to wearing it out natural. Growth doesn't happen as other people's hair. I have a friend with the same hair type as mine that says that our hair "trims itself" lol. I guess I need to incorporate better foods into my diet that promote hair growth and get back into exercise. Perhaps hair multi-vitamins? We will see.

Once I stop wearing my hair on my shoulders as much, and started do more updos, O finally got my hair pass shoulders and to armpit length. I call it "shoulder hair friction".

Your hair is so beautiful! Loving it. Question: How often do you moisturize your hair?
@MsAakifa5 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it applies to skin either because both my parents eat trash and use and skin product and never have a blemish. Meanwhile I have acne and eczema and I scar easily.

Part genetics but almost everyone can grow long hair. My hair grows fast but people couldn’t tell because it kept breaking off due to being unable to afford to care for my hair properly

I'm the only person in my family. That have the longest and healthy hair. My hair grow like weeds. It's only shorter now. Because I always cut it. When it get to a certain length. My hair longest has been bra strap length. My family don't take care of their hair and do not care haha. Just wear wigs and don't care to study hair health. They say hair take too much time.

That’s like saying your body is genetics when we clearly see you working on you body in your videos you hair in the most moisturized I’ve ever seen in you tube videos so that says moisture + protein + trims = length 👍🏽
