Re: a more efficient way for the Canterbury to change course, they'd already been accelerating for a while on their way back to Ceres, so they had to do a pretty hard course correction or they would have shot past the Scopuli's location. They also don't give a good indicator of it in the show, but the Canterbury had to burn for two days at high G to adjust their course.

So glad you guys are watching The Expanse. It’s oh so worth it! One note, when the Canterbury ice hauler does the “flip and burn” it’s to slow down: in space you accelerate and keep going without (appreciable) slow down. Thus, in order to stop, you have to turn around (“flip”) and accelerate (“burn”). Also, they have to get injected with a drugs cocktail (“juice”) to endure the amount of G-force (“G’s”) generated by the acceleration maneuver.

Welcome to The Expanse. Best show ever. "Birds fly strange" - low gravity on Ceres; birds don't need to flap wings constantly to stay aloft. The authors did like Aliens, but most of what they took from that was the theme of "truckers in space".

@@WelpHereWeAreOnKZbin There is a video podcast made by one of the book authors and one of the actors on youtube called Ty & That guy where they talk about the different episodes, the books, other movies and books that they love, that inspired them, and in the 1st episodes they talk about how Alien insipired the Expanse books and made refderence to the feeling of truckers in space started by Alien compared to the previous Sci Fi.
@McNutterino
@McNutterino 2 жыл бұрын
One of the writers of the books is a huge fan of Alien and you can definitely sense that from the first episode. The belter creole is an amalgamation of a dozen or so languages created by a linguist for the show. Ceres is a hollowed out asteroid that has been spun up creating about 1/3 of earths gravity, that's why the bird was flying so oddly. When traveling through space the ships accelerate to the halfway point then flip the ship and decelerate the 2nd half. They get injected with a cocktail of drugs (the juice) so their bodies can tolerate the heavy g forces they go through. This show uses very little "magic" that you see in most sci-fi, they put a lot of effort into using real physics. In an interview one of the writers said, "We're never going to solve a problem by reversing the polarity of the deflector array". The first season is a lot of world building. Pay attention, everything means something.

To clarify on Miller (Thomas Jane) - he's not an Earther undercover, he's a Belter who works for an Earther corporation, so he's viewed by many other Belters as not only an oppressor but also as a traitor.

Just started watching this channel but yeah. It's funny that Miller translated wellwalla as "traitor to my people" because it would more closely translate to "planet lover" (or "well lover" - referring to a gravity well") but to a belter those two things would be the same.

Oh I'm definitely on board with this, it's one of my all time favorite shows. Some spoiler free information: This show is hard sci-fi, it follows pretty strict rules when it comes to physics. E.g. in the scene when they do the flip and burn, they don't go from 0 to 100. Usually ships just travel by constantly being under thrust at up to 1G. In this flip and burn scene, to get to the source of the emergency signal, they accelerate with a lot more than 1G for the initial course correction. That is because despite having incredible efficient engines (the biggest McGuffin/Sci-Fi-Tech in the show), orbital mechanics are still a thing, so you just don't point into a direction and fly there, you have to keep gravity wells in mind, that's why they do this brutal course correction. Though you could argue that it's also there to establish some of the rules of the universe for the audience. The "juice" is a drug that helps the human body deal with acceleration. Nevertheless, strokes and other injuries caused by high G forces are a constant threat in the show. Generally in the Expanse there aren't really many unrealistic/unreasonable technologies humanity possesses, except for the engines (called Epstein drive) and the Mag-Boots. For example, there is no sci-fi way to produce artificial gravity except the one we already know today: acceleration, either from an engine or by spinning a station/ship/asteroid. That's also why most ship decks are oriented vertically (basically you stand on top of the engine). Also general viewing advice: Suspend your questions until season 2, then you get a lot of explanations and the show REALLY starts, the first season leaves you with more questions than answers, so don't worry if you can't keep up, I felt the same way and almost quit, but I didn't and it gets REALLY rewarding the more the show progresses.

Great thing about Expanse is it continues to get better and better, ep to ep, season after season. You are meant to only know what our characters do at this point, but the mysteries do get answers :)

The ships in the Expanse don't have artificial gravity. What produces gravity on board comes from the fact that the engines are thrusting the ship upward against their feet. Unlike Star Trek etc. the decks are positioned as stacks on top of the engines, more like a rocket ship with the burners at the bottom. On board, the engines are always located _downwards_ from where you are standing. There's no 'inertial dampeners'. If you are on the interior of the ship and it changes direction suddenly or for whatever reason decelerates suddenly, you'd best be strapped in or you will go for a very short ride with a frequently tragic stop at the end of it. They take great pains throughout the show to demonstrate how all of the ship's equipment is either bolted in place or else stored in racks that stow and lock against physics from being whipped around on the inside of the ships. Since gravity is different everywhere, different folks from Earth/Mars/Belt have to deal constantly with adjusting to each others' gravity levels. They do a great job keeping it "real".

Excited to see new blood reacting to this amazing show. A couple things. Belters generally habitate in 1/3rd Earth's gravity, (hence the bird only having to barely flap its wings to stay in the air). Asteroids are spun to create that gravity and then hollowed out to create docks, living areas. The plants on the asteriids and ships are used to help scrub the air of carbon dioxide. Almost all of the dialogue is important now or for future episodes. Subtitles help greatly to understand the belters and to capture all of what is said. Pay close attention. Lots of heavy world building for the first 8 episodes or so.

The flip and burn scene, is them actually slowing down so that they can change course, because they were going a huge speed, and unlike in Star trek or Star Wars, you just can't stop. The ship literally had to point its engines in the direction they are travelling and fire up their engines to slow down. The bird was flying strange due to the low gravity on Ceres. The first few episodes there is a lot of worldbuilding. After episode 4 or 5, it kicks up a gear and never slows down really. You are meant to be confused the first few episodes as the puzzle pieces fall into place. There is a lot of devil in the details, there is zero filler in the show. Something mentioned might be hugely important and pay off several seasons later, with you thinking..... Oh... That is what that person meant when they said that...

Great reaction, interesting format. As has been mentioned, this series started as an RPG then became a successful 9-book series (the final book was just released a couple of weeks ago). The original creators of the game and authors of the books were also on the screenwriting team, so this is a very mature story that they know very well from beginning to end. So there are clues to future episodes and even future seasons scattered throughout. You've already seen foreshadowing of events that won't happen until the fifth season. There are nine books in the book series, but the television series will only cover six. The first book is covered in the first season into half of the second season. The second book is covered from the second half of the second season to the middle of the third season, with the third book being covered in the last half of the third season. Then it proceeds a book per season. Because they know it so well, the episodes are extremely information-dense. There is no fluff. All the dialog is significant to future events. All the scenes, all the background convey information about the environment or about the plot. Even computer screens...it would be worth your time to freeze the frame to read background computer screens. Things happening out of focus in the background are even significant. As you've noticed, they don't hold your hand. Characters rarely tell each other things they both know for the sake of the audience. You have already seen things you will need to know to understand events in the future. You won't be shown anything none of the characters knows; you know only what they know...or what they think they know. Your questions are their questions, and you'll get answers as they get answers You have to pay attention, no multitasking. Also, when a space ship explodes, there is always high-speed debris to deal with. Physics is always trying to kill you in space.

A linguist consultant created the language for the show. It is pretty well developed, it is not the same as the books, but the authors who consult on the show like the show Belter more. I'm sure someone has explained, but in case not, they us acceleration and deceleration for gravity so the ships are constantly accelerating to halfway points, and then constantly decelerating the other half. So the flip and burn is actually necessary. The bird is flying in 1/3 the gravity of Earth on Ceres, so they would fly strange. Speaking of Ceres, their gravity is Spin gravity so if you think of a basketball instead of the gravity working from the outside in, spin pushes inside out, so their feet are facing outward.

“Wellwala” doesn’t literally mean “Traitor to my people,” though it can be interpreted in that way. It actually is sort of like a pirate of old calling another pirate a “landlubber.” The word means “well lover,” where “well” refers to a “gravity well,” which is a big planet like Earth or Mars. So therefore, a belter calling another belter “wellwala” means that he/she is accusing that person of siding with Earth or Mars instead of the belt. So in that case, it is intended to be used as a word for traitor, though the literal meaning is a little different (so, if an Earther wanted to call another Earther a traitor, he/she would not say “wellwala” - it would not make sense in that context).

I'll throw a sub for this show as well. The Expanse is an excellent sci-fi show with great characters and world building. So much so that when I started watching it, I was still very much in a episodic and not serial state of mind. After the first couple episodes, I checked out because, it just didn't feel like it was going anywhere, because I was looking for a full story like an episode of Star Trek. But after it was announced that Amazon would be picking it up for a 4th season, I decided to give it another chance and it was around episode 4 when I had a better sense of what was going on, and oh man, what a ride. Season 6 is going on now and I hope you guys stick with it. On another note, it might be nice if you guys did a zoom call to just do a bit of discussion between yourselves, but this is just a suggestion. I'm sure you guys are probably doing what you can, when you can, but we appreciate you spending the time to watch this jewel of a show, beratnas!

I didn't see anyone else bring it up here, so I'll mention it: don't be surprised if you get hit with a copyright claim by someone that goes by something like Lasso Group. (I can't remember the exact name). A lot of others run into this, but they all beat it. Something about how the rights work between them and SyFy or Amazon, I dunno. The other people in charge actually really like reactors I think, and I believe there are even little easter eggs referring to some of them in the show. Anyways, maybe do a little research about this group so you are ready when it comes up. Don't get too worried. It sounds like everyone else beats it. Works case, you may have to put in a dispute and wait a few extra days.

Seeing your other vids, it looks like you react mostly to music, but if you are willing to try this, maybe you may try something else: Can you please try a game called Kerbal Space Program? I think KSP would really compliment your experience with watching The Expanse, as the show really tries to think about orbits and and planetary locations seriously. I feel if you try KSP, your understanding of the size of space and the motion of spaceflight in most of scifi TVs and movies will be fundamentally changed, and you will appreciate The Expanse that much more! Please feel free to comment back with any questions. If you want, I could even help give a tutorial, which could maybe the game easier to manage. I hope you consider this!

Looking forward to your reactions of this show! The Expanse pays a lot of attention to detail when it comes to how we as a species could navigate space. The red-lighted boots that everyone wears are magnetic, so they can stay attached to the 'ground' when a ship is floating without firing its main engine. All the ships are constructed like skyscrapers (floors pointing 'up'), so when its main engines are firing, you would feel 'thrust' gravity as the floor constantly pushes up against you (mag boots are only engaged if the engines are powered off). The more you push the engines, the more G's of gravity you would feel which, beyond a certain amount, would require medication to counter adverse effects on the body (the 'juice'). Similarly, the belter being interrogated on Earth was being tortured. Generations of living in a low gravity environment like the Belt would cause humans to develop longer, more brittle bones, as well as muscles/lungs that cannot handle the 1G of gravity on the Earth's surface. That guy could barely breathe, let alone stand or throw a punch. Bracing for more!
