The nice thing about Cacen Gri is they're easy to make, the only real trick is like making Scones you want to handle the dough as little as possible, but anyone can make them at home on a griddle, I grew up with 4 siblings and when my Mam made them we'd queue to eat them warm off the griddle, and we'd always eat them with lots of butter, nice video, makes me want to make Welsh cakes now! I live just down the road from Betws, being damp even when it's not properly raining is pretty much the climate around here!

That a South Wales breakfast. Absolutely great (loved trying laverbread on a holiday to Cardiff) but not things you usually come across in North Wales. When I was growing up in Wales the differences between North and South Wales really puzzled me. Nowadays I just think it’s great that such a small country can have such a diversity, and not just in food. Although the language is broadly the same there are certain words that are different. E.g. the Welsh word for milk if different north and south.

The little steam train brought back great memories! The city next to our small town had a zoo that only had animals native to Michigan and were brought there if they had some issue and could no longer live in the wild. There was a train that traveled through the zoo and the waterside of the huge bay. If remembering correctly, it was a nice twenty minute ride and cost $1 for adults, 50 cents for 12 and under. Unfortunately, with growth, the zoo was no longer in a safe space and the powers that be decided to not move it to a better area but to just close it. They sold the train to a municipality in the southern area of Michigan. Too bad they didn't keep it on the waterfront as a tourist attraction.

You overpaid for fuel, motorway prices are very high, you should always fuel up at a supermarket if you can.

stx trouble with supermarket fuel is it’s not the best quality which is why it’s cheap, but if you have a hire car I guess it doesn’t matter, lol

@@Penddraig7 is there much truth in that claim? I'm sure there's some advantage but you're definitely right, youll probably not notice that much difference in a rental Vauxhall Astra. And the clutch control and driving style probably does more damage than the fuel choice.

stx the point is, because it’s poorer quality, it’s less efficient and therefore you get less miles to the gallon and it can actually cost you more because you have to refuel more, someone doing the odd trip is not really going to be that disadvantaged but those from uk who drive everyday will, it will cost them more over the year if they use supermarket petrol then if they go to shell or Esso etc the more you fill up in a year the more you will be paying, it doesn’t always pay to go cheap!

The reason you are not fans of Scotch is due to you buying what is more or less the cheapest pretty horrible Scotch there is. I am a fan of highland Scotch I would suggest before you leave get a bottle of Glenmorangie 10 its a fantastic introduction to highland Scotch at an affordable price. Its warm and fruity with some hints of citrus it really opens up with a little water and with a sweet finish would make you think its Bourbon! The flavour profiles of Scottish whisky is massive and a awesome journey to have!

Welsh is a beautiful language - and you can learn it using KZbin, and other langauge aps. My mother's side is originally from Wales - Rees is a common name there. Diolch yn fawr! (Dee-olchun va-urr! The "ch" is similar to that in German, only, not quite as rough.) Stay safe, and have fun!

Something else worth seeing in Betws-y-Coed is the small church, up Old Church Road. It's rather old. Pick the right time when the lady who looks after it is there and she can tell you quite a bit about the history of the village, and of course the church. And the train ride is definitely worthwhile. 8) If you're there in the evening, I recommend the Stables Bar for food, attached to the Royal Oak Hotel. Note that although the region in general is probably more well known for various outdoor pursuits, there are a great many museums, castles, mines and other places to visit. Dinorwig hydroelectric power station is worth seing, very interesting place (electricmountain.co.uk), though the visitor centre is closed just now for refurbishment work (reopens Easter 2019). Btw, if heading up to Scotland, the M6 motorway route past Wigan can be rather busy, not pleasant if you're unfamiliar with UK roads. An alternative route is to cross the bridge at Runcorn, rejoin the M6 a bit further north; especially wise if the weather is bad, the spray on the motorway from large trucks is dreadful. Also, if heading for Edinburgh, instead of following the motorway all the way, come off at Junction 15, take the A701 north/east through Moffat (nice place to stop, free parking, I recommend the Rublin' Tum cafe), a good scenic drive. After going through a village called Romannobridge, look out for and take the B7059 (left-hand turnoff) to West Linton; once there, turn right onto the A702 to Edinburgh. This avoids the slow urban area of Penicuik (if you miss the B7059, just follow the A701, noting the left turn it takes at Leadburn). The A702 from West Linton is better though. Eventually you'll reach the city bypass, at which point you can head west or east if need be, or continue north into the city outskirts, depending on where you want to go. I don't recommend the A1 route to Scotland because it's a less pleasant drive, the A1 can be horribly busy (renowned for accidents), and one ends up on the east side of Edinburgh which has some horrid roundabouts on the bypass. Going to Glasgow is somewhat easier, the motorway routes go right into the heart of the city. Lastly, if you need a break on the M6, there's a nice chip shop in a small place called Shap. :) Come off at Junction 39; afterwards, if you like you can continue north on the A6 for a while which shadows the motorway for a few miles, rejoin the motorway at Junction 40, via the A66 (just south of Penrith). Motorway service stations are expensive and the food is generally terrible. Likewise, fill up with petrol at a supermarket in a town before joining a motorway, as fuel prices on the motorways can be very high, just like the food cost.

A lot of people are saying on the comments how £77 to fill up is expensive, depending on the size of the engine of the car, such as a larger capacity diesel car, £77 to fill up is normal. My car is a 2 litre diesel and costs me £70-£80 to fill up.

If you’re still in the UK and traveling around I recommend a town where I used to live called Bury St Edmunds down in Suffolk. Fantastic old market town, loads of history, some old ruins to walk around and it’s the home of the smallest pub in England! Suffolk is general is worth doing some research on, there’s some great little places down there to explore.

Welsh cakes are super easy to make and also super quick. You must try making your own. You just need a cast iron skillet, girdle, hot plate, or heavy based pan.

Drove through Betws-y-Coed before but never stopped, which everyone tells me is a mistake. Food looked good and loved the plastic bottle caps, very inventive. My grandkids would have loved that train ride, must admit at only £2 a head, I would have too. The Welsh cakes looked and sounded great, so well worth the trip. never had petrol pumped into my car for about 40 years, think you guys hit lucky. Great watch, cheers Alan

Oh dear! You're in scotland and drinking terrible whisky. Please visit Edradour, Scotland's smallest distillery. It's near pitlochry, does a brilliant short tour, and you get to taste some really good stuff. Also it is as pretty as heaven.

Petrol is particularly expensive at the moment but that does seem a lot. There are still some little garages that pump the petrol for you, they tend to be the old fashioned rural ones that have a repair shop on site. Sometimes they get a subsidy to provide the service. That station looked quite fancy to be serviced though.

As far as I know, its only Shell petrol stations that offer that service (between certain hours), the rest of the petrol stations in the UK let you fend for yourself.

Next time you guys are in South Wales, you should visit the Trago Mills mega store in Merthyr Tydfil. You can get an amazing Yorkshire pudding wrap there from the Crosswoods store, there's also a great welshcake shop there with a great variety of different welshcakes to try 👍🏻

I always think welsh cakes taste like a scone that has been squished! If you are ever in Cardiff in Wales there is a shop called fabulous welsh cakes, it’s my favourite place for welsh cakes and they do tonnes of great flavours.

Hey, glad you made it to our stunning North Wales, if you get a chance to come back head further West. I live and work all round north Wales and places like Harlech, Porthmadog, Criccieth, Pwllheli, and Abersoch are stunning towns with amazing views of the coast and great places to eat. Harlech castle has some gorgeous views of West Wales and to stay there are some great glamping pods near by in penrhyndeudraeth, if you head to Harlech you must go through blaenau-ffestiniog and take a little wounder round and down the Caverns or even Bounce below. I can categorically say that the BEST welsh cakes are .... usually the ones you make yourself :D Though I have a soft nostalgic spot for my Mamgu's (Grandmother in South Wales) welsh cakes. She kept having to make loads though - as my brother and I kept pinching the hot ones off the griddle before she could sugar them sometimes. Happy days

Next time you go traveling around England you should go to a place called Beaulieu in The New Forest and check out Palace House, Beaulieu Abbey and the National Motor Museum I think you would really enjoy it.

Wooo Welsh cakes are the best! I recommend them freshly made from the Cardiff Market! I love that you went out of your way for Welsh cakes though! Your breakfast looked like a standard English breakfast, did look like a real good one though, not as greasy as some you get here :D I'm not a whisky drinker myself but don't think I'd ever put lime in it!
