We walked a lot of this track before the build, my friend mike and myself spent many days and weeks viewing and dreaming about it being finished, unfortunatley Mike only ever got to see it as far as Beddgellert, he passed two years before completion, This is a wonderful railway that is a credit to the hard work by some fantastic workers and volunteers.

Hello, I did the same as you and your friend Mike. As long ago as the mid 60's I used to walk the trackbed with my father and grandfather wondering what it must have been like to see a train running through the Aberglaslyn Pass. I'm sorry to hear that your friend Mike didn't get to see the line completed. The people who brought this wonderful line back to life certainly deserve a well earned "thank you".

This is an absolutely great video, I now live in Australia but if I ever get back to the UK this will be No 1 on my list, I often travelled around these parts when British Rail were running back in the early 1960s and once travelled from Pwllheli to Carmarthen but alas these routes don't exist anymore, this is why this little railway is so important to not only visitors but to the local communities, long may it continue.

Hi, I'm looking forward to returning to Australia for more railway adventures, hopefully the Savannahlander and the railways of Tasmania. You were lucky to have ridden the Pwllheli to Caernarfon line, something I'd love to have done. If you able to get back to the UK some day, I'm sure you'll love the Welsh Highland Railway, it's a gem with a character similar to that of Australia's Puffing Billy.

As you point out the line doesn't just go from one place to another, it serves places that are worth visiting in their own right, such the Glaslyn Osprey Centre, Beddgelert Village, Beddgelert Forest and Snowdon Ranger for an alternative walk to the the summit of Mount Snowdon. There is something very special about Welsh scenery, the mountains are not the highest and it rains a lot. I love the dry stone walls, pretty villages and glorious coastline, there are few places in the world to beat walking across Barmouth bridge on a warm sunny evening, the views are stunning. I've been fortunate to see a bit of the world, there are many awesome places, but few come close to matching North Wales, with its wonderful scenery, intriguing folk lore, unpronounceable place names and fascinating industrial heritage of which the narrow gauge railways are an integral part.

I remember seeing the originals of these trips but it's nice to watch them again. Your explanation of how spring-loaded "trailing" points work was good. I can remember standing on the overhead foot-bridge near the train station in my town and watching shunting operations going on, with a couple of sets of points being weight-loaded rather than spring-loaded but giving the same effect. The points would be held in one position unless someone pulled the lever or unless a wagon came through from the trailing end of the "unselected" track, and I would watch the lever jump as the rolling wagon pushed the points temporarily to the position to allow the wagon go through.
@Timsvideochannel14 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed it a second time. The spring points alarmed so many viewers, I thought I'd try to explain how they worked, usually I can find something on the internet I can post a link to, but I didn't find an explanation for sprung or weighted points. Like yourself, I can remember the days when wagons were individually shunted, it was common practice to allow wagons to push the point blades over in the manner you describe.

@@josephkarl2061 I my memory serves me correctly Märklin could be either three rail or stud contact, making it easier to have trains running in opposite directions on the same track, today it it is simple with modern computer controllers, when I built my model railway, Hornby had just introduced their Zero 1 controllers, the cost of converting all my locomotives was beyond my pocket, so I used conventional systems with automatic train control activated by read switches to reverse the polarity and change the points, the system was made by AMR. My single track circuits still use this system today, it would have been much easier to use the system you saw.

This is an amazing jewel for the Walsh tourist industry. Does it pay its way ?. When was it built and for what reason ??. Either way it is a beautiful addition to any country..

Hi, this railway is operated using a combination of volunteers and full time staff, helped with additional funding from sources such as members donations and subscriptions, Welsh development agency funding and National Lottery grants for specific projects. The railway probably doesn't cover its operating costs from ticket sales alone, but it attracts tourists to the area who spend money in hotels, cafes and other tourist attractions. Take in the wider context the Welsh narrow gauge railways make a useful contribution the the economy of the country. The WHR operates throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn, with limited Santa special trains in Winter.
