I'm from Kilburn but the family originates from Wood Green and Clerckenwell. My great great grandad was disabled and back then, in the Victorian era; if you were handicapped, you cut keys or fixed shoes. Those jobs were kind of carved out to ensure someone who was crippled by war or polio, could bring home the bacon. Great great grandad was a cobbler in Wood Green. I believe there was something like 7 kids. They lived in a hovel on a cobbler's earnings. Solid people ❤ In the 80s and 90s my old man worked in Angel, back when Islington wasn't famous for being gentrified Guardianista territory; housing Corbyn, Tony and Cherie Blair. Before the chattering classes claimed Islington, in the 70s and 80s, the Barnsbury area behind Upper Street was known for being the squat capital of Europe. It was where you went if you wanted drugs or guns. Hippies, IRA cells and Jamaican Yardies were all squatting in those beautiful Regency, Georgian and Gothic Revival palaces, surrounding a gated communal square with a lawn. Some of the most beautiful real estate in London was almost entirely in decay and being squatted by loafers, terrorists and gangsters. Now it is claimed by the Dark Lord Tony Blair and his ilk. Bring back the wronguns I say. The one throwback to old Islington which I believe has survived. Islington was and perhaps still is the Manor for the heaviest London crime family since the Krays and Richerdsons. The Clerckenwell Crime Syndicate, otherwise known as the A Team or Adams family. As far as I know Pat Adams is still London's Godfather, making the wider family and associates, the undisputed guv'nors of London. Smart and scary. When I was a kid, some severed heads were found in the urinals of one of those old school public toilets. Word was they tried to muscle in on the A's. But when mass immigration bought Yardies from Jamaica, I believe they folded the Jamaican firms into the Adams organization for street level dealing and to assist with collecting a tax/rent from the Albanian, Kurds and other assorted foreign firms. Or so I'm told by people who used to know the score. I left the UK twenty years ago so my contemporary London street knowledge might be pure bumfluffery 😂😂😂😂

If you haven't yet done a video on Crystal Palace, I highly recommend it. I was born and raised there and it has bags of history, character, and great pubs - including one named The Alma (large and beautifully decorated) situated on the triangle where Church Road meets Westow Street. At another point of the triangle, at the top of Anerley Hill, is the grand Westow House pub, from which there are expansive views of the Surrey countryside beyond Croydon. At another point of the triangle, at the end of Westow Street, looking down the steep Gypsy Hill, there is an amazing panoramic view of South London, all the way to the river with St Paul's Cathedral clearly visible in good weather.

Being a 60 year old male, I can tell you that the very very high unemployment de-industrialized 1980’s Britain was not the good old days. People moaned just as much, and were just as gloomy. It’s just that the issues have shifted. The only people talking about the 80’s positively are those with rose-tinted nostalgic glasses or were just kids or not born at all, or unfortunately xenophobic.
@WendallExplores3 күн бұрын
So basically, Britain has always been crap? 🤣
@simonbeckford3 күн бұрын
@ Well, I didn’t mention the word ‘crap’, my point is, it wasn’t better or worse, just different issues at hand. If we could point to a ‘golden age’ for WC people, it was probably post WW2 - 1955 to 1970, where living standards were rising fast and there were plenty of jobs, even many decent jobs, around the UK for WC people. That all started to falter in the 70’s, especially the mid to late 70’s. So it’s a real mixed picture outside of 1955-1970 for WC people.
