For the Hiking story, Radiation was my first thought. Border of Russia & Kazakhstan in the 80's, unexplained invisible killer in a remote location. lil bit of acid rain on some exposed halite could have caused the first incident if there is halite there anyways. Ammonia and water hit salt; dissolve salt into chlorine and sodium ions which mix with the ammonia to make mustard gas which gets caught in the area of the first afflicted and the subsequent rescuers all were affected as well. 🤷‍♂️ Just thought I’d add that freak accident no-fault deaths happen sometimes. The dyatlov pass incident is widely accepted to have been a slab avalanche freak accident nowadays. Edit:wendigoon’s theory is the most likely though and I will agree is terrifying.
