The catholic church conversation was extremely braindead. Confession originated from the Didache (written by the church fathers) and was based on the belief that Jesus gave his followers in John 20:21-23. Not only was it not used for political gain, it was an excommunicable offense for a priest to do so. Indulgences also weren't a "way to pay your way into heaven" but were instead a form of penance used to make rich people donate more to charities or local churches (which provided healthcare and the like). They were a way for the pope and bishops to incentivize charity and were based on the belief that the rock of the church can "loose on heaven" what they "loose on earth", as Christ says. Finally, Taylor, just because you joke about people being upset at you for misunderstanding core beliefs of theirs, doesn't mean you're shielded from such criticism. You have an audience and, as such, a responsibility to get your facts straight if you're going to comment on their practices. Spreading misinformation and hiding under a veil of your own ignorance to save face is objectively evil.

You are completely wrong about confession. The rule of the Catholic Church is that a priest may not ever divulge information in a confession at risk of excommunication, even if what was confessed was a crime. Literally, if you were a hitman who had killed thousands and you wanted to confess that to your priest you could at no legal risk. That's the beauty of confession. The priest literally tells you to "go in peace" after you tell your sins. As well as that, there's a much more literal feeling of accountability when you have a symbol of holiness sitting on the other side of that confession booth. Someone who is absolutely closer to God than you are, a priest. That is not to say priests are perfect and obviously the whole pedophilia issue is a whole other can of worms (a can of worms that isn't endorsed by the Catholic church.) My messages here won't help, though. If you are protestant, the very minimum I would ask of you is to try a confession. They don't take very long and I can promise you that you will understand why many Catholics hold confession in such a high regard.
