This isn't at all a good explanation, and he didn't do his research. There are many different types of Orthodoxy these days. Up until around 100 years ago, there was really just the one, true faith, and those who chose not to accept it but rather do their own version. The reason "Old calendar" Greek Orthodox refer to themselves as old calender isn't exclusively because of the calender. The calendar is just the most obvious point. What "Old calenderists" stand for is a completely unadulterated version of the Christian church. There is no change to adapt to modern times, because the church is everlasting and unchanging, so why would our traditions change to suit modern tastes? With small changes opens the gateway to big changes, and you can believe that's not true over the time of your life, but it's not true for a church that has lasted 2000 years and upheld its traditions since they were conceived. Churches that adopted the new calender went away with many critical Orthodox traditions. This is a fact. They go hand in hand. Most new calenderists don't even upkeep the fast which is so critical to the faith. Like I said there are many different types of Orthodoxy these days and you can find churches holding different parts of different traditions. You can even find "old calender" churches that keep the old calender but dispose of many other core Orthodox traditions (eg the Russian Orthodox church). So its not just about the calender. Fasting within orthodoxy is done for about half the year but in normal times, only on Wednesday and Friday. We eat on fasting days, but we abstain in general from animal products. Second, orthodoxy did not arise in the west and 'tradition' in orthodoxy is very different from tradition in the west. Also, one very common expression within orthodoxy is that "We know where the church is, not where it isn't" as in, we know orthodoxy is the true church, however we hope but we don't know that for example protestants or Catholics will be saved. I've actually talked to the surviving heavens gate members, they helped me with my religion project on them lmao they still believe in Heaven's gate, it's super evident from what they say in their emails. it got actually creepy when they told me that they believe it was an honor to stay behind and help their fellow members off themselves and didn't feel any remorse, and told me that I would likely die in a "recycling of the earth", I almost stopped communication after that. The weird thing is that if Jim Jones had had died suddenly in the 60s when his church was still in Indianapolis, he'd likely be remembered relatively fondly as a figure of the civil rights movement; then he moved the church to San Francisco where his church had a truly astounding amount of political sway in the city during the 70s. My Dad did an audit for scientology in the 80s. It really freaked him out, so he never went back. They called him and when he said he wasn't interested, the person on the phone started asking who he was talking to and was essentially demanding him to give a reason as to why he wasn't coming back. In roughly 2015~, they called him at his work and invited him to a barbecue in another state. Keep in mind, hes hard to find. He's changed his last name, has drifted around a lot, doesn't have a social media presence, and has had a ton of other jobs. They called him again sometime later, too. Weird organization.

He doesn’t have a team of researchers working for him, so I do understand if he doesn’t have a comprehensive knowledge of every single thing he researches. This is more of a summary of items on the iceberg after all, and there is so much mystery around cults and fringe religious groups already that its forgivable to not have a complete understanding of them. in 5th grade my friends and i as a joke created a soup cult and we got a bunch of other kids involved and it went on for a while our rituals where we put this one kid (my friend Darin who was the smallest) on one of the benches and we would stand or rest on our knees and chant the names of soup brands and soup types while he danced around vigorously and get louder and louder till we all started repeatedly screaming soup till Darin was tired of dancing and sometimes id stand on the bench (cuz i was the nut case who founded it) and would read off the "soup bible" which where just pieces of paper that i printed the history of soup onto and whenever they served grilled cheese for lunch with tomato soup we'd all sit together at a table and give Darin the warm tomato liquid and bow our heads as he wolfed all of it down (it was like 9 bowls including his) the teachers didn't care as long as we weren't trying to sacrifice Darin and disturbing the other classes going on or if people where testing nearby. it was a yard about the size of half a football field in length with like 4 trees and a playground with some swings.

Not just people, but specifically the children. Almost all of the deaths audible on the tape are from the children because Jones knew starting with the kids would force the parents to kill their children and it would make it easier to die themselves. One of my best friends grew up in the moonies. It's a VERY toxic cult, especially since the iron rod bit has been added. She had 3 siblings, all but one (I believe) has left the cult... all have trauma from it. One of my friends sisters has been writing papers on the moonies and how it was like growing up in a cult and why it it was so damaging. My friend was so close to getting an arranged marriage, even though she never truly believe in it... she just felt so pressured to. She was underage when she was trying to make this choice and would have been paired up with someone she may have not even known... A lot of times they are overlooked because nothing SUPER crazy has happened with them, but there is a ton of abuse and awful beliefs, and it is still a dangerous cult. I still live near her parents (my friend now lives across the country and is very happy, we keep in touch.) A Christmas or two ago, her mom gave us books on the "church" as a gift.... YIKES.

It's insanely rare, because most belief systems are by nature going to proselytize. They need to be spread, to grow, to "preach the good word." If a religion is truly benign, I can live and let live. But but overtime I've come to think that I don't think belief is capable of being personal, simply because if someone believes, they function on that faith as if it's a fact. People who believe in anything from Jesus to Allah to Ra to Odin function and orient their lives based on that. I don't think there are truly benign religions. If you think and conduct yourself on something as cold hard fact with no room for new information that might completely change what you know, because it's about faith, which means, regardless of any challenges or evidence to the contrary, you will still believe, which is the point of faith, then it's no personal anymore. It's not just a hope that something might be real, it IS real to you. Atheism, as in the co-opted pseudo version in which it is a belief that there is no god is just the same side of the coin. Belief overall is a dangerous thing, because there is no empirical proof and the nature of belief leads to refuting, ignoring or dismissing anything that might have proof. Atheism is meant to be a-theist, meaning lack of theology. Or non-theistic. Not belief in absence. I have no issue with hoping for something. People need hope. I hope for an afterlife. I'm terrified of death, but I don't think it's likely. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't believe either way. I don't base my life on possible unknowns, I just conduct myself as much as I can to what is most likely based on what I do know.

At some point you are disrespecting reality by not trying to understand someone magnitudes more intelligent and knowledgeable than you. We live in a society where peoples vote/opinion mostly counts as equal. However that is just the social construct, the value of the average human's opinions is very nearly 0 compared to well executed science/math/reason. I would say the only thing that is not directly resolvable is when it has social/objective predicates, but for predicates such as "is the bible non-fiction/verifiable" the answer has repeatedly been, very obviously no. And the validity of the bible is not only not provable, but DISPROVABLE. (See: Proofs/Discrete Mathematics) As another comment on "respect", religion typically encourages and teaches the bypass of such logic (aforementioned sci/math/logic stuff). So you are actively making people LESS intelligent by teaching objectively wrong and irrational logic/reasoning skills. This is disrespectful to intelligence.. in general, disrespectful to the person being manipulated, disrespectful to society as a detriment. If you truly and fully understand Science/Discrete Math/Logical Fallacy, and are able to apply it universally to all topics, then its very obvious the dangers of "respecting religion"

Fun fact: I went on a missions trip to one of these Polygimous Mormon towns (Colorado City, on the border of Utah and Arizona). It was increadbly errie as the streets were pretty much empty all day and one of my friends got a silent death threat from one of the locals. But we did have a short conversation with a younger woman (maybe in her 20’s at the time) who was really nice and talked a little bit of what has gone on in the town and her life there. Apperently the prophet (no relation to the actual LDS prophet because, yaknow, excommunication) of this particular group was in prison at the time for reasons you could probably surmise.

Omg I saw a documentary on that town. This woman was trying to escape from there and when ppl came to rescue her several townsmen just was terrorizing the rescuers. Apparently the town had cameras EVERYWHERE.

I know Jon Krakauer wrote an entire book about Fundamentalist LDS and half the book is dedicated to looking at the modern sects which are all over Canada, the US and Mexico. Basically the prophet in question (Warren Jeff) was arrested for untold counts of taking advantage of and marrying underage girls, as well as sexually assaulting underage boys during his time as the teacher/principal of the Colorado City school. He was so extreme in his acts and the beliefs he preached that even the other Fundamentalist Mormons would go so far as to hate him. And plenty of critics or people trying to escape the cult who have gone missing as well.
