If by any chance, you guys are interested in watching movies about hockey for your personal pleasure or maybe even for the channel I recommend these 3 classics : Slapshot (comedy), Miracle on Ice (Drama), Maurice Richard (Biography). Maurice Richard comparable to Jackie Robinson for the impact he had on the French-canadians, the movie is part hockey and part history lesson.

Hasek was definitely a one of a kind. You're right, he was even then known as a super-unorthodox goalie. People thought he was just flopping around, but he knew what he was doing. Goalies of the same era that were more conventional: Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur. "Normal" goalies, but absolutely top tier.
@answeris4217
@answeris4217 Жыл бұрын
Brodeur was conventional because of Roy. Roy's style wasn't popular before him. There's a few who are accredited to have started it. Glenn Hall and Tony Esposito. Between those two and Roy nobody really played it. But yeah Hasek...probably will never see another like him. There's aspect of his style like the drop of the stick to make a blocker save that you will see.

Patrick Roy was the prototypical butterfly goalie who inspired many French Canadians to give being a goalie a go. But Dominik Hasek had his own style that nobody could emulate and would be crazy to even try. He was unorthodox and perhaps that contributed to his greatness.

The first time I saw Hasek with all his flopping around, I thought he was just getting lucky. Then he proceeded to "get lucky" for years and years until ultimately becoming the greatest goalie of all time. Such a unique style that, despite being apparent madness, actually has a method behind it. I'm not sure we'll see anything like it for a long time with the way the position is (arguably over) coached now.

This was me, exactly!!! I saw him flail in some odd contortion to make a save, and I thought "The kid got lucky on that one" Then he did it again. Then again. Then again and again and again. Was grateful to witness Hasek's prime even though I was quite young, but he was my idol growing up. The greatest goalie of all time, hands down. The 1999 Sabres team he took to the cup was a remarkable feat in itself even though we lost by the infamous "no goal" call. Many Sabres fans were furious when he left to join the Red Wings, but in hindsight I think many are happy he got his much deserved championships to cement his legacy as the GOAT.

@rorys3980
@rorys3980 Жыл бұрын
Hasek from 1993-1999 relative to the rest of goalies at that time is essentially what Wayne Gretzky or Bobby Orr were like to the rest of their field. He averaged a .930 save % in those 6 seasons when the average was in the low .900s and the next closest was Patrick Roy at .915 and Martin Brodeur at .914 (the two that most people consider in the top 3 goalies of all time along with Hasek). It’s tough to illustrate just how massive of a gap that is when someone stops 93% of shots compared to 91.5% or 90%, but it really is a huge gap if you’re familiar with the statistics. He led the league in save % in all 6 of those seasons, won the best goalie award in 5 of them, and won the league MVP twice (only goalie to win the award twice). His .922 save % in his career still leads all goalies (minimum 200 games), despite the average save % going way up since the time he played (1990-2008). And as you can see from this video, there’s really no one that played like him, it was just like an elastic man playing as unorthodox as possible, but somehow making the chaos controlled. Really the only other goalie I can think of that played a similar wild style and had success was Tim Thomas, but he only put together a few exceptional seasons, whereas Hasek stayed at the top for such a long period of time. In terms of goalie highlights, there definitely isn’t anyone else like him for stockpiling so man of those “wow” saves.

I see Roy as the best for the era he played in and how he played in the Clutch. He is accredited of winning the 93 cup single handedly. His prime was in the scoring era when Gretzky and Lemieux played. His playoff Goals against is almost points higher than his regular season stats.

Dominik Hasek was absolutely the greatest of all time. He has the highest save percentage of any goalie to play, he had 6 vezinas, 2 harts, and 2 cups, and he holds the record for most playoff shutouts in one year (2002). That team was the most stacked team in history and they didn’t even have to score more than 1 to win 6 out of the 16 games you need to win the cup.
@mmullym
@mmullym Жыл бұрын
One of the reason Hasek was so incredible was because he was really unorthodox right down to his helmet. The goalie cannot carry the puck over the red line but if they want to come sliding way out of their net to make a save they can.. just no one does lol. Those desperation flop around no look saves are so ridiculous. 99% of goalies are very strict and controlled in their positioning and movement. Not this guy and he was one of the greatest ever so who knows. He was truly one of a kind. There are guys who have had better numbers and won more but in terms of "impressive" I don't think anyone beats The Dominator. Martin Brodeur was pretty flashy I guess. Patrick Roy was just crazy in general but not really "exciting" as a goalie. He popularized the "buttefly" style that basically works the percentages and is kind of boring (but it wins). Most goalies are still using that style today because of Roy. That era had a lot of the classic weird goalie characters though.. Ed Belfour, Curtis Joseph, Ron Hextall are others off the top of my head. Most goalies now are kind of boring in their style and it's not really a bad thing. Stay in your net stop the puck.

My head tells me that the best goalie was Dominik Hasek, but my personal memories of being tormented scream Patrick Roy. He nearly single-handedly led his Montreal Canadiens to frequent victories over my favorite team, the Boston Bruins. Another all-time great was Vladislav Tretiak, the goalie for the Soviet National Team in the '70s and early '80s. He was the goalie who was removed from the "Miracle on Ice" game in 1980 after letting in a long-distance goal. Tretiak retired before Russians were allowed by their own country to play in the NHL.

Nobody ever played goalie like Hasek. These days, goalies are much less acrobatic. Goalies now are usually much taller and play a very technical, positional "butterfly" style -- meaning that they drop to their knees and splay their lower legs to cover the bottom of the net. It's very effective, but much more boring. But even in the 90s when there were more "stand up" goalies who had to rely on athleticism to make saves, nobody was doing what Hasek was. Truly one of a kind. As a Sabres fan, I was lucky enough to watch him stand on his head for a decade. Also worth noting that he led Czech to an Olympic gold medal in 1998, which was considered a big upset.

Hasek had a basic understanding of the game that we take for granted today: cover the bottom of the net, and you make scoring that much more difficult for players. Look at how many of his unbelievable saves would have been goals had the puck just been lifted a few feet off the ice. But in a close-in situation on a bang-bang play, it becomes significantly more difficult for a shooter to do that. No goalie had really figured that out before Dom, but now it's basically a prerequisite to be a goalie in the NHL to be good at covering the bottom of the net, especially from close in. There aren't many players that revolutionized the game. Hasek is up there with Orr and Gretzky because he did just that.
@don178

He certainly was amazing. And he didn't play his first NHL game until his age 26 season. In 2014, just after his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Sabres put out an infographic covering his time in the Buffalo Sabre's organization (1992 thru 2001). Among his achievements at the time it was published: Hasek holds 31% of the Sabre's shutouts. Shutouts account for 1 in 5 of his wins Shutouts account for 1 in 10 of his games played. League best Goals Against Average twice, and was in the top 10 nine times. During those 9 seasons, he held the best Save Percentage 6 straight times (93-94 season thru 98-99 season). No other goalie managed to do this more than 4 times throughout their entire career. Finally, Hasek held the five best single season Save Percentage for a decade. No other goalie was better than his 5th best.

The rule is pretty much that if a goaltender comes out of his crease(his protected blue zone) he becomes a regular player and is no longer protected by his "special" status so technically he can be checked like any other player. Althought there is an unwritten rule that says you cant check a goalie even outside of his zone. The goaltender cannot at any point crossed the red line in the middle of the rink with puck control.Otherwise its a penalty. But no goalie in their right mind would do that anyways ;)

Roy is wah like a wah-wah pedal a guitar player uses. Anyways great reaction to definitely one of the greatest to put on the pads. Our Red Wings loved having a seasoned vet like him help us hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup.

When the goalie comes out that far, which is super rare due to risk, they cant cover or hold onto puck for a stoppage. They can only save and them immediately move it. And you get a penalty if you takeout the player like a soccer goalie. So you can come flying out to stop a shot but cant cover/hold the puck or take out the player.

3:20 Goalies aren't alllowed to freeze the puck outside of their net, but they can technically play until the red line (center of the ice)

I remember, with his style we thought it was pure luck when he began to dominate. But you can't be lucky for long, the guy knew what he was doing even though he looked like a fish out of water.

3:30, The goalie is allowed to make saves with his hands like in Soccer, and to also play the puck within most of his side of the ice (minus the two small areas outside the trapezoid behind the net. You can thank Martin Brodeur for that). However, he can't cross the center red line, or it's a minor penalty against him. It's just that it very rarely ever happens.

For my money, he's the best goalie of all time. Patrick Roy revolutionized the position by bringing a new style that other goalies could copy; Hasek didn't because no one could copy him. Fun fact (assuming you guys are fans of what we over here call soccer), Hasek was pretty good buds with fellow countryman Petr Cech. Look up their names together for an all-time great picnic photoshoot.

I’ve played goal for 25 years hasek did everything you’re not supposed to as a goalie and he was great at it but you can’t teach it I’m a huge wings fan and the year they won the Stanley cup my son was born shortly after and named him dominik 😂

Those types of saves where the goalie seems to flail all around and that make you go, “okay the goalie got lucky there” yeah Hasek made a career out of those saves. Made you realize it’s not luck, it’s an insane skill

Was Hasek the GOAT? Hard to say. Patrick Roy's name is more often mentioned as the GOAT, and his success, longevity and consistency (he was systematically one of the best goalies of the league, from his rookie year to its last) are good arguments in his favor. That being said, "peak" Hasek was as dominant a player as I've ever seen, and he is by a mile the most spectacular goalie to ever play the game; he was just a human highlight reel! Opponents just did not know how to score on him because his style was so unorthodox, they could never tell when he was beaten. P.S.: Goalies can't cross the center line and can't handle the puck behind the goal line except inside the designated area. Other than that, the rules are basically the same than for any other player.

Think of the defensive zone, up to a handful of feet before the blue line, as akin to the 18-yard penalty area in soccer. A hockey goalie can theoretically skate with or without the puck beyond there, the way a soccer goalie can venture or dribble outside the penalty area. But like how a soccer keeper gets a red card if he handles the ball outside the area, a hockey goalie who freezes the puck well outside his crease risks a delay of game penalty. As for the play where Hasek knocked over the forward in the middle of his zone, that’s like a soccer tackle. If Hasek (or a defender) touches the puck first, that’s fine, even if the forward tumbles. But if he gets the player first or misses the puck entirely, it’s a tripping penalty.

Hasek is in my mind the best goalie of all time for sure. Another goalie with a really impressive highlight reel is Marc Andre Fleury.

Some players have flashy highlights but aren't necessarily the best players. Hasek was that amazing combination. Two Cups, 6 straight save percentage leader, 6 Vezinas, 2 Harts, All-100 team, HOF.

Gumby on skates. His flexibility was off the charts and his hand to eye coordination unbelievable. Reflexes of a mongoose. His rollover and stack the pads is maybe the best save ever. You won't find a better goalie for highlights,
