Roy had it in his contract that they would pull him out of the game after so many goals, with the team breaking his contract by leaving him in, they had no legal argument that would keep Roy playing, so they couldn't even fight with him, they had to trade him away. Him going to the Avalanche is another middle finger to the Canadians, the Avs were his childhood favourite team, and huge Quebec rival, the Nordiques(before they moved the year before).

I can't believe he said nothing of the herculean effort that was the closeout game 4 of the 1996 Stanley Cup Finals. That game was 0-0 and went into TRIPLE OVERTIME. Roy made an NHL record 63 saves out of 63 shots on goal in a Stanley Cup Finals game, while Vanbiesbrouck saved 55 out of the 56 shots that came his way. It was an epic clash of goalie wills. Also no Canadian team, not just the Canadians, but no team from CANADA has won the Stanley Cup since Roy left Montreal.

3:03 If you're wondering why Roy's stats prior to being drafted were considered "unexceptional", take a look at the last two columns, which reads GAA and SV%, short for Goals Against Average and Save Percentage. GAA is similar to ERA in baseball, so to put it simply, it is the mean of goals allowed per game by a goalie. A good GAA is below 2.50, and looking at Roy's stats, you can see that is not the case. Save percentage, on the other hand, is the percentage of shots on goal stopped by a goalie, and is calculated by dividing the number of saves a goalie makes by the total number of shots on goal he received. A good save percentage is between 0.905 and 0.920, so anything below 0.900 is considered "subpar". I hope that was easy enough to understand and of course, keep up the awesome work you've been doing 😁

i am so glad this guy giving this speech pointed out the Turmoil between then Coach Mario Tremblay and Patrick Roy ! it was real, Fierce, and Personal.. believe me when i tell you, this the Sole reason he left the Organization, and i dont want to hear this about his Ego got the better of him. or he thought himself to be bigger than the Team. this was the city he was brought up in, and Drafted here. back stopped the Franchise to it's 23rd, 24th Championship... but that night of Dec 2, 1995 against the Detroit Red Wings, he was humiliated in front of an entire Fanbase.... and management to his expense made an absolute Mockery of the entire Situation... leading to what was the darkest Day in Montreal Canadiens History.. the infamous Trade to Colorado.. at the end of the day, this was on Houle to side with his Coach over a Star Netminder, which ended up being their loss, and his gain.. as he went on to win 2 more cups with Avs..most notably '96... when he backstopped an already Stacked Colorado Avalanche team to their First Title. mean while, Tremblay and his newly Revamped Canadiens, staring Netminder Jocelyn Thibault was ousted in the first round by NY Rangers lol.... and not long after he was Fired as Coach replaced by Alain Vignault. and then shortly after that Houle was shown the door as well! Roy went on to the Hall of fame, with an astounding 4 Cups, 3 Conn smythe, 3 Vezinas. youngest Goaltender to Win the Conn Smythe, at age 20 and holds the record being the only PLAYER in history to Win the award 3x had a pretty decent Coaching Career as well ... So I'm Swedish, and we've had a lot of great hockey goalies … but the two greatest of all time (YES) are Dominic Hasek and the inimitable Patrick Roy. He was abnormal. One of a kind. No one could ever hope to copy Hasek, that would be impossible (he was made of rubber), but Patrick Roy changed the game fundamentally. He's the model for all modern goalies, and carried teams on his back by pure force of will. He'd often make a save and stand with the puck in his hand like the Statue of Liberty, cementing his arrogant, no mercy attitude. Roy was a savage and extraordinarily talented goalie. With regard to the rivalry with the Detroit Red Wings, this was more of a “who is the king of the hill” type of thing. There was no salary cap at that time, and both teams had hired staggeringly talented rosters. Way above other teams at the time and were considered both then, and now, to be some of the most talented teams ever to play the game. Every time they met this was on display and so there was animosity (part of it was that both teams had hired guys that had previous bad blood between them) so it was a powder keg waiting to go off. I saw some of this, including that infamous game live late at night on cable TV, and so I lived through this and remember what it was like. Being a Swede, I had players on both sides in these two teams (Peter Forsberg for the Avs and Niklas Lidstrom for the Red Wings) and so the fighting and animosity was ulcer inducing. For any kind of hockey "dream team" it would be Roy in goal, just like I would pick Messi for my football team. You want the best to build the team around, right? Hockey is a big thing not just in North America but also in Scandinavia and Russia, and to some extent also on the continent (especially in Germany). And Patrick Roy is universally agreed to be the best goalie ever. Sorry for the long rant, but I think it is important to explain that it's not only Americans that think he's the best ever. He was, and even though Hasek was in some ways close, Roy was the best. Ever. Cheers🍺(I am now of to watch some late night NHL hockey)

It's my understanding that the French-Canadian pronunciation of "Roy" as "Wah" is not proper French. I've only heard the term "nutmeg" used by soccer/football fans reacting to videos of hockey; never by long-time hockey fans. Some baseball announcers will say the ball went "through the five-hole" when it goes between a fielder's legs. You might hear the term "six-hole," which is the small space that sometimes appears between the goalie's blocker arm holding his stick and his body. By the way, the Czech name "Hasek" is pronounced as "HAH-sheck," unless we in North America are saying it wrong.

13:39, No, 1993 was the last time the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. In fact, 1993 was the last time a Canadian based team last won Lord Stanley. MTL did make a very surprising run to the Cup Final in 2021, during the COVID shortened 56 Game Season where the NHL had to temporarily realign the 4 divisions. MTL, despite being one of the weakest teams to ever make the playoffs, benefitted from finishing in the final spot (4th) in the North, got hot, made it out of the All-Canadian Division, upsetted Vegas in the Semifinal, before pretty much running out of gas, and losing in 5 games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Putting through a forward or defenceman's legs would just be that, although I've started to hear nutmeg in hockey more recently as well. I know you guys did this a while ago, but I only recently came across this one, and would like to set the record straight about this video. Like what you mentioned about what happened between Colorado and Detroit, that part of the story was NOT covered in the video you watched, and that it was later clarified, well, I would like to clarify something THIS video failed to mention. Yes, there was bad blood between the coach Tremblay and Roy, but what the video failed to mention was the fact that Roy had been mouthing off a bit to the papers, stating that he, alone, won games. And hockey is probably the team sport that relies on the WHOLE team more than any other. A goalkeeper can look great if his defence men clear all the rebounds. And in the game that Patrick gave up all those goals, the defence decided, more or less, to let Patrick do it all by himself, which is why he looked so bad. Yes, he was humiliated and humbled, but in a way, after telling the media that he could do it all himself, he kind of deserved it a little. Yes, it went TOO far. I've lived all my life in the Montreal area, and what most non-hockey, non-Canadian people do NOT understand, is how serious hockey is (or was) taken in Montreal. The pressure on ANY player. The Montreal Canadians have more Stanley Cups than the next two teams combined. They are the only team in NHL history to win five Cups in a row, and they did that twice. Only the NY Islanders came close, winning four Cups in a row. And now, with over 30 teams, it will NEVER happen again. And up until their last Cup in 1993, they had never gone a decade without a Cup, (80's 70's etc.)

I personally think Hasek is the goat but Roy has 3 different conn Smythe trophies (finals mvp) in 3 different decades which is insane. That is also the record for the conn Smythe. I still think Hasek is better since he played behind much worse teams and still had insane numbers and trophies. He also carried a non playoff team to the finals.

I still CANNOT stand Mario Tremblay to this day for being THE only reason Roy left Montreal, because of his ego Tremblay had sealed the Canadiens's faith for the upcoming decade of mediocrity by forcing, already at that time, an Hall of Famer to request to be traded without hesitation during the infamous game.. 1993 was the last time the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. No other Canadian team has won the cup since.

For Goalies just look at the GAA (goals against average) and SV% (save percentage) if you want a quick idea if they are good or not. You "want" under 2 GAA and +90% SV%.

Roy just got hired by the Islanders as their Head Coach like last week. The Islanders are in, or are fighting for, a wildcard spot for the play offs. They are a boring team to watch. Very slow going. Very grind it out style. They have the old Devils GM from their hay-day, Lou Lamerillo. He's a Hall of Famer himself. He's a character. But yeah, if the Islanders make the playoffs, anyone they face has a real challenge. Great goalie. Strong system. And now Roy as coach to set the fire under their ass and give em swagger. I'm a Rangers fan, I'm really jealous.

Saint Patrick is going to make the Islanders. Roy did not think he was better than others. He believed he could win and that his team COULD win.

I'll try to explain to you why Montreal traded Roy based on what I have read since all those years. For you, unforgiven internet pundits, please know that this is not my opinion but things I have heard and read: Roy was a God in Montreal. But the Canadiens being the Canadiens: nobody can be bigger than the team, his arrogance rubbed some people the wrong way. So before the hiring of Tremblay, management were already try to trade him (I think Fiset and Nolan has ben mentionned often). Then there was the december incident against the Wings that we saw in the video. You have to understand that the Canadiens have the more Stanley Cup wins than any sport and they take their image as seriously has can possibly be, something irrationally seriously some would say, and the wave to the fans and talking directly to the President were acts the management could not let pass. Now had that Montreal's new GM was totally inexperienced, having been hired for the job after a PR job for a brewing company, and put him under pressure to trade Roy who was considered one the best goalie ever and you have recipe for disaster. Not wanting to wait for the dust to settle on what was a PR nightmare for the team, they traded him for a lesser return. Colorado's GM Pierre Lacroix, one of the savviest GM at the time, really pulled a fast one on his Montreal counterpart, Rejean Houle. Montreal was bound for some dark years after that, some of which were the worst since the forties. Many atributes this unsuccessful drought to this trade being the beginning of the end for Montreal's continued success. Here it is.

To be fair, the 1993 Canadiens weren't that bad. Their defense was great, and the playoffs showed the explosion of John LeClair, a player who would turn out to be a great scorer, albeit for the Philadelphia Flyers. But the team never fully recovered from his loss. Mario Tremblay was just the first of many lousy coaches the team had, and even though the team eventually had the good fortune of drafting another phenom in net, Carey Price, they never succeeded in building a team that was good enough to even contend. Now, Price is gone and they're rebuilding again.

With hockey season ramping back up I'm going to suggest Cheap Seat Sports's NHL 101 playlist. I wasn't too impressed with some of the introduction to hockey videos that you guys watched. They seemed to be either poorly explained or too advanced for newcomers to the sport. CSS produced his videos around the time that the Kraken joined the league for new fans and has videos ranging from history of the league, to basic offense and defense, to making sense of stats and league point standings. There's a lot to choose from and it's a very well crafted series.

Very good regular season goalie but come playoff time...best that ever played and it's not close. The only player to win the Conn Smythe (playoff MVP) 3 times, won 4 Cups, his playoffs wins and winning % is miles ahead of anyone else. What is probably his most insane record is his playoff sudden death overtime record...40-16. Martin Brodeur is 2nd place with a 22-24 record. Roy's PO OT record just with the Canadien's alone would still be first at 24-6...yes, that's an absolutely absurd 24-6. Best playoff and money goalie to ever lace me up PERIOD! The problem in Montreal was Roy was so popular and held so much sway that upper management felt threatened so they brought in french radio and TV personality Mario Tremblay, a former teammate of Roy's who hated each other and had publicly feuded for years up to this point. The fans would never have stood for the team trading Roy. There was almost a riot a few years before when rumours of former GM Serge Savard apparently entertaining a deal to send Roy to Detroit for Yzerman. So in comes the moron fall guys Houle as GM and Tremblay as coach with one directive...make Roy want to leave, to ask to leave. Ronald Corey and the then board of directors are the ones Habs fans should blame for the circus we got back then and should be spit on in public anytime they're spotted.
