The last time I played Minecraft was in the summer of 2020. Hadn't thought about it much since. Earlier today, a friend invited me to join a Minecraft server he was putting together. When I signed into my account on the website, THAT'S when I first learned about the migration. Checking my email, I have exactly 3 emails about it that I ignored because they were from Mojang, the company that created a game I hadn't played since 2020. I no longer own Minecraft Java Edition, and (according to the FAQ) have no recourse but to purchase the game again. I will not be doing that. I get that they gave people notice about this, but the bottom line is that I payed for Minecraft in 2020, and no longer have access to the game in 2024. It's shitty, no matter how you look at it.

My wife didn't get any emails. Reading through forums on these "migration" related questions. I was thinking about that this younger generation is completely complicit in theft. Minecaft's marketing page is full of terms like "buy", "purchase" or "get" the game. Even the receipt after the transaction says that you are entitled to the digital copy of the game and that you can download it from the mentioned site, but the fact that you cannot play it anymore if you don't perform some arbitrary action they want you to do was never part of the deal when I bought the game for my wife. This game should completely be playable without internet requirements or the need for an online account and yet what you bought can stop working anytime if you are not the type who is invested in this community and misses the "announcements". The fact that they did not give a new copy or a refund by default to those who lost their access to their games because of this "migration" and that they chose Dec 18th as the date of closing the migration period, which is right before the holidays, tells a lot about them. They remove your access to your game you purchased years ago and when you write them a mail to request a refund or new copy, they say they can do nothing anymore and it's all on us, since the responsibility to save my access to the game was mine. I see that many members of the Minecraft community try to gaslight the few who "missed" this migration, but the fact is that many of us put these games on their shelves and expected nothing but to be able to play the game they purchased anytime they want because this is how owning something works. I mean, at least that's what it meant in the past. It is sad. And now that we don't have access to our game anymore why should I care about that fancy Microsoft account? To even care about it, at least I should still have to own the game I purchased x years ago...

​@@gombike95 Yeah, it's pretty anti-consumer. The amount of people that have been fervidly defending the way they handled this was genuinely astonishing to me. How can permanently losing access to something you paid for with the understanding that you could keep it indefinitely ever be anything but a bad thing for consumers? I just don't understand the reasoning there. They should not have stopped offering free keys to people who missed the migration period. It doesn't cost them a dime to enact a policy where someone proving that they purchased the game in the past is enough for them to provide another copy. They already have our money, it's not like they gave it back. :/ The fact of the matter is, they had no incentive to help anyone. Out of the many people who missed the migration due to circumstances out of their control (such as literally any email related issue), a great deal of them will repurchase the game, and Microsoft will get their money twice, which is exactly what they want. Edit: I guess it's Mojang's fault, not Microsoft.

Happened the exact same to me, bought in 2019 and couldnt log in last week and i posted a ticket, the help center basically gaslit me saying it made "global gaming news" in the middle of covid lol. Worst part is the community siding with them saying "YoU jUsT HaD tO LoOk YoUr EmAiLs". I also got banned from their reddit page for posting about the migration and muted by the mod when asking which rule i broke.

@@JerkyVend0r after consistently emailing for about a month and a half they finally told me they have the ability to give out keys, but since it is past the migration period they are refusing. It's really annoying to be told that they could help, but they just really don't want to.

Within two days of migrating my account from Mojang to Microsoft I was locked out of Minecraft because I don't own a mobile phone. This is why I now play Vintage Story.

90 days grace period is nothing. And I am not optimistic about Microsoft stretching this period indifinetly. I have a friend that opens Minecraft like once a year out of nostalgia. When I warned him about migration, he was really surprised, because he haven't heard about it and was surprised how easily he can lose singleplayer indie game he bought. edit: And he lost it anyway, since he is unable to recover old email and transaction id after all these years.

Firstly, this is Mojangs decision, not Microsofts. Secondly, Those cases will always happen, even if they didnt have a deadline. Their old system was costing them more and more to update and was just so unsafe it was a joke. They HAD to move. I do feel sorry for your friend

If they depend on microsoft's login services, they will have less autonomy, less power to push back against microsoft's future bs Microsoft's end goal is to have complete control over things, so they are doing things to move in that direction, piece by piece, they are playing the long game

I think it's weird people actually fall for the security card Microsoft plays. If you use the same password for two different accounts, and one's login info is stolen, you lose both. How does it make it any more secure to merge the accounts and their login info? Either way, you lose everything. If anything, you are more secure having two accounts instead of a merged one account because an account thief doesn't know if you use the same password for both accounts.

@@user-bx4go2jr2rBecause everyone reuses passwords, because all of us have too many accounts to keep track of. Use a password manager. Protonpass is great, i use keepass.

@@user-bx4go2jr2r a thief can still try the password from one account to enter the other, and it would usually be much better than a random guess. Having a password stored in 2 different places means twice the risk since breach of one reveals the other. If you have a key copy under a mat and copy under a flower pot, total probability of at least one copy being found rises. Having different keys and requiring both reduces risks, but people are usually too lazy to make them different

I blame Notch, but for different reason's: selling Minecraft to a ruthless corporation. The original system wasn't great, but I think that with time they would have made it more secure. Microsoft's cynical move was just to make money, and tie everyone into their TOS and account system. They have a 100 year plan for minecraft, and its to beat this dead horse of a game into dust. Minecraft is not what it used to be; its much more linear and less of the distictly-styled sandbox game it used to be. I lost my account, but I'm not mad; just dissapointed. I will simply play old versions on a cracked client now, because i bought it and I never agreed to any of this back then. Rant over.

I'm not nessisarilly mad about account migration on its own but it is suspicious. The fact they cut off tech suport for those who got the memo late is a bad look thoguh. ... I still think the Eula changes are at least partly Microsoft's idea, on acount of the XBox platform doing simmular things. ... Any changes that relate to the gameplay, and not to the monitization or TOS, etc, are definetly 100% Monjang; good, bad, and ugly alike.

So i bought minecraft in april 2023 from Microsoft store and logged in minecraft launcher with my Microsoft account and when i clicked on minecraft java edition it only asked me to make a username nothing related to mojang account so how do i know what my mojang account is? Coz i need it for post migration.

honestly, they gave a gigantic grace period, of a couple years... usually for this type of thing, the grace period is 7 days, and they charge you to do it...

sure they gave us a long time to migrate, but they didn't fix any problem the users had after migration. i've been trying for months to fix this problem that only happened after some time since i migrated where it doesn't find my account and the launcher asks me to buy minecraft again

@@lemonblossom. If you have not yet, file a report with the FTC if Mojang has not solved this issue. I'm completely over asking Mojang to acknowledge the issues and resolve them. They are standing in defiance of the legal contract we entered into and at this point I'm not quiet about it. They defrauded millions of customers and they are supported by one of the most powerful companies on the planet. How can they not afford to solve customer technical issues??

Are your world saves stored by your account or by your computer? Because in theory, you could still rebuy Minecraft and just copy your world saves over if you go past the grace period.

Microsoft has tried to keep the changes subtle, but things are definitely going downhill in some regards. Anyway, Minetest just keeps getting better. I hope gltf support gets added soon so mobs are easier to make.

My childhood and mental stability account, as Minecraft is the only game that keeps me alive

IDK why you're so viciously hating Notch for not implementing proper account security system from the start. He needed a simple system to buy his game at some point and nickname plus password was a good and measured decision. A few years pass and he forms an indie studio, migration made more difficult to hack accounts and gave Minecraft players an ability to try out other Mojang's games. It's kind of simmilar to situation when we more willingly buy games on Steam due to it being a single entry point to all of your bought products. Also it's interesting to see an opposing opinion. I personally think that migration was caused due to newly formed Minecraft eco system with Bedrock, Java and other editions that use different auth systems which is opposite to user friendlyness. Now we are using single Microsoft account to play them all and it might be convenient.

I have been looking for more information on it but very few people are discussing in their videos. Your explanation helps me to understand the why better. It's hilarious too 😂 I do feel really bad for everyone who lost access to the email they used to get Minecraft in the first place. This seems to be where players will lose access to their accounts the most.

You're welcome! And yeah its not ideal, no migration is. Minecraft is an... uniquely challenged game where all their techdept is now catching up to them and we the players are feeling it sadly.

I lost access to the email that I used when I bought the game for myself in 2015. I was told I could only be helped if I found the original prepaid card. I looked for quite a while, and finally found it in early January. They have refused to help, even though I have been sending emails for over a month now trying to explain the situation. It's no fun to get kicked in the teeth,when you care about the game, and have been playing it since 2010.

Honestly what a lot of people forget, is most of us are or act like kids. And what do kids hate the most? CHANGE! I bet that is also a big factor. Honestly i come from the time where if Xbox bought a game studio it was known to be dead. Nowdays if studios were bought by xbox they usually get like the greenlight to do whatever they want, and usually succeed. Only really requirement is that gamepass support has to be a thing. Microsoft sucks, no questions asked, but as long as we hold companies accountable they turn out fine if they are willing to listen/not to die.
