Pick up your copy of Alfred Hitchcock - Vertigo now: bit.ly/VertigoUS
Marvel recently put out a surprise Halloween special Werewolf by Night on Disney Plus. Based off of the classic horror comics, it's presented in black and white and has the cozy feeling of an old Universal Monster monster movie. I liked it, but was taken aback a little because it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. So let's get into it!

It makes total sense to me that nobody uses the name “Man-Thing”, since that’s a super rude thing to call your friend Ted. They could’ve put it into the mouth of one of the other hunters but it would have been really weird for Jack or Elsa to call him Man-Thing
@PenitusVox
@PenitusVox Жыл бұрын
It also fits the theme of the story. A large part of the special is dedicated to the idea that these supposed monsters still have some humanity to them. He's not a mindless beast, he's a guy named Ted.

I hope Marvel puts more focus on projects like this one. This was such a breath of fresh air. I've grown tired of the superhero genre over the years, but I always appreciate it when we get more experimental stuff where these movies are mixed with other genres (like Werewolf by Night being like a classic Universal Monsters horror movie, or The Batman being a Hitchcockian neo-noir film, or Logan as a neo-Western).

While I’m not too bothered by the lack of more werewolf action here, it would be cool to see more of this in the MCU. Though I’m not really expecting that to happen anytime soon either. Though it would be very much needed as the MCU needs more varied content like this here. Especially horror focused stuff.

@zakkmylde1712 Жыл бұрын
@@seanwilkinson7431 it has been made known that they are going to be focusing more on a few individual stories instead of one big one leading into a huge crossover. One story is gonna be of a more Sci fi cosmic story, another more grounded story for the street level heroes, a horror story and of course the Kang plot that is more fantasy based. More often than not it's going to be The Midnight Sons (or Suns the more modern takes) not Savage Avengers.

Didn't really like the Werewolf, the design and interpretation of it. The design looked too human (even more human then the Wolfman) and he even fought like a super-human, similar to a hairy version of Spider-Man. I was hoping they would embrace the monster aspect of it. Especially since they seemed to get Man-Thing right.

Apparently it wasn't meant to be titled Werewolf by Night and they went with it because audiences test better for Marvel stuff when it's presented as centering around a team or character so they couldn't just call it a Marvel Studios Halloween Special or something standard like that. The thing I loved about the original Universal monster movies from the 30s 40s and 50s was the fact you basically could watch most of them without having prior knowledge to their predecessors. I get some people might have issues with the continuity of those films, but I feel like with careful planning a studio could easily pull off a cinematic universe that didn’t require you to remember every single aspect of the last 20+ movies/shows in order to gain a somewhat decent understanding of what was going on. I wish Marvel would treat all of its films as more standalone projects (besides actual direct sequels such as Iron Man 1-2 etc.). I mean you can throw in other characters or storylines but I feel like Marvel just does it in such a expositional dump that it just feels like you missed everything that was important. Natural and organic integration is really what they need to work on.
