Werewolf by Night was released today and I gotta say, this show was amazing. Honestly, I think this is what MCU Phase 4 should have been and I am excited to see what Phase 5 does with these characters. But the show was beautifully shot, it's self-contained and if you know as much about the comics as I do, you know that there are some amazing references and Easter eggs to the comics. For example, did you know Man-Thing exists because of Captain America? Let me know what you thought about Werewolf by Night in the comments below!
▸ What is Werewolf by Night: Werewolf by Night is an American television special for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Werewolf by Night was released on October 7, 2022, by Disney+, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. The special received positive reviews from critics, with praise for its use of practical effects, the black-and-white cinematography, performances (particularly Bernal and Donnelly), Giacchino's direction and score, and its story, with many noting its departure from previous MCU media, though some criticized its short runtime and characters.

@@Mate397 are you serious? Because it wasn't a B-grade gore fest with zero plot, character development or actual interesting backstory? They showed enough violence and blood to tease it for future seasons or projects where the supernatural becomes important going forward. Moon Knight has DID and that is way more compelling than this supernatural ass kicking adventures which is predictable. Shitty characters and senseless violence doesn't make whatever bullshit you think would be better. If your character has psychological issues, respect the science and real life implications of it, otherwise pleasing your idiotic obsession for gore means nothing. Think phase 4 Multiverse is more of a Phase 4 Multigenre with Marvel trying out Action, Horror, Magic, Sci-fi space, sitcom and classic Superhero etc, to see what sticks. However that said did enjoy this show and the way they totally matched the classic B&W horror movie film. Also although I have seen people say that tapestry shows Gorr, I think it looks more like Tarn the Uncaring of Arakko from X-men.

I think the a lot of the positive reviews, especially with more knowledgeable comic fans, the reason for such an overwhelming response is one, because it’s legitimately fantastic. Second, because it was so detached from the current MCU storyline that it allowed for a lot of people to watch it a little bit more like a newcomer to the MCU film slate. Just had to enjoy what you were given.

Werewolf By Night proves that you can still do some really self-contained, niche BS and still have it be phenomenal. I don’t agree with most people’s ill-sentiments towards Phase 4, I think most people are on Endgame brain still and wanting things to be just as grandiose, but it is absolutely refreshing to have something like this come around. Makes me wish Eternals and Black Widow took a similar approach in both length and approach. Edit: just to elaborate; I don’t like all of p4 but I don’t hate it either. Not going to pretend phases 1-3 didn’t have their fair share of stinkers too. But Werewolf by Night is easily a top 5 MCU project for sure.

Really? You can’t look at past films, compare them to recent ones and see the degradation? It hasn’t all been terrible, but projects like Thor LaT and She-Hulk were disasters imo. It seems like as time goes by they keep tunneling themselves deeper and deeper into their generic formula and by far the worst thing that keeps ramping up imo has been the “comedy.” Older MCU films were often action dramas with slight sprinkles of comedy but that has recently flipped.

I love the relationship between Jack Russell and Man-Thing. It's like Rocket and Groot, but less comedic and more down to earth. And the atmosphere in this show was just superb. I also loved the nod to the classic Wolf-Man in the Werewolf by Night design, even if I did hope for a more wolf based design. But I love the Universal Monsters so much, and it's a nice homage. Also the gore was fun. Losing limbs, blood, Man-Thing burning guys alive. Just great. Also Ulysses setting up a sort of Necromantic recording system was so macabre but also fantastic. I hope Werewolf by Night makes an appearance in future Moon Knight seasons and they form an friendship like they have in the comics. That'd be a really nice setup for Midnight Suns.

I was surprised by the design choice of the werewolf. Very interesting. I wasn’t mad at it at all. Just surprised by it.

Absolutely loved it, not just the story but the idea of these one off features. We need more of these small contained stories, give us a few characters overlapping, introduce new characters. Just add more depth to the universe without needing everything to tie back to the avengers.

This was a start for the special features It shows that it works I would definitely love to have some special features that show what certain characters are doing during the final Incursion in Kang Dynasty Like for example “Last days of Ms Marvel” or “Last days of Deadpool” Something like that to see what each of them do during the collapse of the multiverse

Agreed for sure this was so good!!! And yes a series of one shots for phase four would have been cooler. They could still have clues and tiny threads to a bigger story… but start by building a new foundation for the future MCU is a cooler thought process….IMO

I really enjoyed it as a one shot. Well balanced with that great monotone aesthetic and intro to a whole new world within the MCU. ~_~

I just watched it and it’s by far the best thing marvel has done in months. A 1 shot that got straight to the point. Now I want more and I’m not going to get it.

A big thing you missed is that the beginning of the Marvel was a transition from horror/Sci-Fi to heroes. That's why some of the initial heroes and villains are monstrous: the Thing, the Hulk resembled their earlier monsters, and Ant-man's origin recycled a story that appeared in one of their earlier horror/Sci-Fi books. The first issue of the Fantastic Four had them fighting a monster similar to the monsters like Groot that appeared in regularly in Tales of Suspense or Tales to Astonish. Marvel eased into the Super-hero genre, it wasn't a sudden change.

Amazing. Loved that they went with 70s accurate Werewolf by Night, jeans and all. Man-Thing was brilliant (think I am in the small percentage who enjoyed the TV movie). What would have made the whole thing complete for me, is a mid credit scene of Howard the Duck appearing through the Nexus as the guys sat around the camp fire.

Worth mentioning, the program seems closer to a Marvel Comics Presents series than a one-shot. The inclusion of the cigarette burns and the faux reel transitions fit with the comic issue release format, each driving the story along. Another reason why the feature is so fantastic.

Rob, please consider doing a Bloodstone family history; think of all you could include in that: the old Ulysses stories, his death in the "Rampaging Hulk" B&W magazine, Elsa & Nextwave, Cullen and "Avengers Arena", the "Hunt for the Bloodstone" arc from Captain America...

Agreed, this one was a perfect 10 in all regards; they hit that ball right into the next park with this movie. The attention to detail, the apparent love and devotion of and to the old world horror genre Marvel introduced in the comics decades ago combined with that old Lugosi/Karloff-aesthetic, pacing, plot and design, score, everything, just perfect and I absolutely loved it all. And Man-Thing... man... he not only looked exactly as he should, they made sure his personality was there exactly as it is in the comics too. Pure awesomeness all the way. If anything it was too little of this gorgeous thing, I crave more, much much more of it. And(!) after having seen Thor! Love And Thunder recently and having to put up with the endless nonsense about She-Hulk (which has forced me to never see it, because I'm so goddamn tired of hearing about it) my expectations were rather low, even though this one features a genre I love, and then I was just blown away by this perfect little gem. Now I'm waiting for them to decide to make Tomb Of Dracula with the same dedication and love for the series and especially the aesthetics of the brilliant team of Gene Colan and Tom Palmer and that they'll make it as a series. That would make this little old beastie so happy indeed. Whatever is in store for us later on, please o please, continue with this awesomeness. And have Michael Giacchino direct it all, the man is a genius.
