I dressed for Halloween like a werewolf. Always like werewolves. I acted as if I changed into the animal. I wish I could be in a movie that would put makeup on me to change into one.

Werewolves are left fairly ambiguous as to their creation. Tolkein never said anything about them being specificly created by Sauron or Morgoth as neither of them have the power to create life( on that Tolkein was crystal clear). They have the power to corrupt life already created and that could have been how werewolves were created but like Dragons they could be inhabited by Miar Spiits that simply chose that form. Tolkein leaves open both or a combination of possibilities. Balrogs on the other hand like Ungoliant were not at all like the Ring Wraiths for example that were slaves to Saurons Will. They like Samaug in the 3rd Age were completely independent Miar each of which was an equal of Sauron in terms of they were the same species. They served Morgoth because they chose to do so. They voluntarily came out of the Timeless Halls after being created by Illuvitar and then chose to follow Morgoth down into darkness. They were not a creature created or corrupted by Sauron. In truth I think one reason Tolkein never wrote any official alliance between these earlier creatures and Sauron in the 3rd Age is because in all likelihood Sauron would not have been able to actually control the Balrogs.

@TM Delacrush Yes and no. It's suggested that she is but in actuality there is not really much else that she could be. She is either a Miar or one of the "nameless things" who just happens to have a name. Think for just one second. Morgoth was the mightiest of all the Valar and all of the Ainur. The power he possessed was far greater than even Manwe and in fact the biggest challenge that Morgoth posed to Manwe himself was that Manwe took a very long time to even develop a concept of what Evil was. There is for example the constant thought of the reader of the Silmarillion as to how they would overcome such an advantage. One advantage that Men and Elves had that we often don't think of is the fact that none of the Valar nor Miar truly understood or knew what men, and Elves were truly capable of. The Ainur like Angels in the Christian Bible did not create any living beings. Only Illuvitar had that ability and he did not tell the Ainur much about his children. He wished them to learn for themselves so it's not exactly a situation where even the Ainur had all the answers including Morgoth. In the case of Sauron who was not anywhere close to as mighty as his master though he was possibly more wise and cunning. He actually according to Tokein feared the Numenoreans especially. Some of this fear revolved around the fact he had no idea what gifts Illuvitar might have bestowed upon them after the War of Wrath. His phony surrender an infiltration of Numenor was for exactly that reason. Individual Elves such as Luthien for example defeated both Morgoth and Sauron and took back the Simarills. Ungoliant grew to be so powerful that in order to fight her off once she set her desires on the Simarills he had to call for all of his Balrogs. It took Morgoth and all the Balrogs to defeat Ungoliant so its not likely that she was just a big spider.

@TM Delacrush The watcher didn't scare or intimidate Morgoth nor did it or would it take an Army of Balrogs to defeat it. Yes her origin is supposed to be a bit of a mystery. In truth you could say the very same for much of the Silmarillion. Most people have in my opinion the wrong idea about the entire book. It's not the hard and set cannon most people these days seem to take it for. For one JRR Tolkein never intended to publish it as a book and TV Shows and movies were probably things he never watched or at least very little. He began writing what would become the Silmarillion when he was in the trenches of WWI. He wasn't writing a book he was creating a world and framework to write his other books. Christopher Tolkein published it years later after just after his father's death. ( Tolkein Sr died in 1973 and The Silmarillion was published in 1977). Christopher accomplished this book from compiling a room full of his father's disorganized notes. That's what the Silmarillion was notes. Tolkein began his work as an effort to create a Mythology for the Anglo Saxons who don't really have one of their own. This was because they had a vibrant oral history and it was forbidden to write it down so there aren't a bunch of written records of it. Beuwulf is one of the few written ledgends we have and it was written in the 700s about events in the 6th Century. If we can think of the Lord of the Rings as a mythology for the Anglo Saxons, the Silmarillion is more properly a Mythology for those within the story. It's is their myths and ledgends. It was always meant to be taken as such. That means the authors, both of them wanted you to use your imagination. I think one aspect of the entire story is that it's easy to think of the Valar like Melkor as being all powerful and all knowing but Tolkein meant the Ainur, all of them to be more along the lines of the Norse God Panteon.( The Ainur were angelic beings of pure spirit but not gods) They clothed themselves in flesh from time to time. This for example made them different from the Elves who were also creatures of Spirit but being embodied for them was their natural state where as it was not for most of the Ainur. What I meant by comparing them to the Norse God's was that they could indeed be killed( or at least their bodies could be) and they actually did have weaknesses. One of those weaknesses was they did not create Men or Elves nor any living beings and Illuvitar did not give them much information so though they and by extension the reader assume they are more powerful but they don't actually know that for sure. Men are somewhat enigmatic to them in the sense that when Elves or even Miar like Gandalf are killed their Spirit goes to the Halls of Mandos. Men on the other hand, not even the Valar know what happens to them when they die. Saurons entire reason for surrendering and allowing himself to be taken prisoner to Numenor was so he could figure out exactly the best way to defeat them. After the War of Wrath and the creation of Numenor Sauron has no actual clue what gifts that Illuvitar may have bestowed upon the Numenoreans.

@TM Delacrush First I'm not flexing or trying to pick a fight so quit getting so damn bent out of shape. I didn't say that you said that Morgoth was intimidated or feared the Watcher in the Water. I doubt either he or Sauron was even aware of the Watcher. Morgoth surely wasn't as it didn't pop up outside Moria until the third age. what I was attempting to say was that even though Tolkein never specified what she was or what her origin was its logical deduction that she was not simply one of those Nameless things because none of those other creatures ever took on Morgoth. By her actions and her success at challenging Morgoth and causing him to call for help she was definitely something more. It's deliberately ambiguous so that people like us would have such debates. While I'm not flexing or picking a fight I also could care less what you or anyone else thinks about me. I'm 55 yo. I didn't have KZbin much less the Internet when I grew up so I feel no need to come on line and seek validation from random strangers.

Eru didn't create Valinor. Valinor didn't exists until the throwing down of the Lamps. If you are going to delve into Tolkien, you had best have your terms fully understood.

JRR 'The Professor', Professor of Language' Tolkien, would look at your comment and say something along the lines of 'My lad, you don't understand your language. Here's a crash course. Werewolves comes from 'were' which means 'Man' and 'wolves', which I hope is straightforward, thus werewolf means 'Man-wolf' or mannish wolf and given how Germanic languages work, that is the correct translation. What you are thinking about is wolf-like men or lycanthropos. A common but inexcusable mistake."
