Also extremely important IMO? Hand tools. For things like pliers and cutters I would say „splurge a little to save money down the line“. You can rarely go wrong with Knipex, although they are a little on the pricey side. But they will last you for years. Had one of those Chinesium cutters for a while. It was „okay-ish“, but flimsy and at some point the rivet just got looser and looser, then one of the blades chipped and then it went in the bin. Got a Knipex Flush Cutter and have had zero regrets. Same is true for wire strippers. I used to have a reaaally cheap one that was never really good and tended to chew up some types of cables. Bit the bullet a few years ago and paid almost 40 bucks for a Jokari stripper and never looked back since. And it strips anything from 10 - 26AWG with no issues whatsoever. As for screw drivers: My recommendation is to get a set of really good ones for the everyday screw types you come across most often. Wera and Wiha are good options. For those more „exotic“ or less frequently used screw types, get one or two cheap bit sets that have all of them inside. Soldering iron: I have been using a TS80 as my „daily driver“. Awesome iron. And it is portable, you can even run it off an RC LiPo battery pack.😁 The multimeter that I use is a Uni-T61B. Cheap, accurate enough. No need to spend Fluke money (yet).

I always figured I was "ok" at soldering, but not very good. Never could do anything fancy, and couldn't get to small areas easily. Until I bought a proper Hakko set - in my case the FX-888D. Suddenly I found out that I could solder, and solder pretty well, considering. Hands still shake, and I still need to learn the value of proper heat application and tip selection, but overall, the amount that a decent soldering iron will improve your soldering skills cannot be overstated.

I pretty much hate desoldering. I had a plastic solder pump before that didn't do anything at all besides cooling the joint and whacking the board with too much recoil. I found an old ZD-190 and not only was it an improvement, i decided to mod it further. Thing is, i can't reach the top with my thumb! My hands are too small. So i just sawed off the sheath and 3D printed myself a new round button. So i don't have to reset it with my thumb, i can simply whack my thigh. Next thing i want to try is something like ZD-211 desoldering iron, though i hear they aren't all that well made. I also received Bismuth solder from China recently - seems to help with desoldering through hole connections and mounting tabs.

I'm looking over at my setup now. A good mini screwdriver set is great, buying a set with 5 or 6 bits will get you nowhere and you'll end up stripping out a lot of screws and you'll end up frustrated with your projects. Item #97517 from Harbor Freight is an amazing low cost kit, I strongly recommend it. Also, you got me hooked on silicone wire. I don't bother wiring a small project unless I'm using silicone wire now, big game changer for me. Dremels are nice (WEN) but an inexpensive set of files will suffice for plastic

Tons of great projects out there! You can really just go search Arduino or Raspberry Pi on instagram or pinterest and get a ton of ideas that way. One I did recently that's definitely easier than the GBZ is the TinyPi: easy to put together and is a blast. That said though, we've had plenty of people successfully make a Game Boy Zero as their first project over on the forums. So don't necessarily let that deter you. :)
@elmono88946 жыл бұрын
Hey, I did my gameboy zero and in the process of making it I learned a lot! (I did not know how to soder at all and I didnt have any electronic knowledge), you will find a lot of help in the forums, the people are awsome there... make a thread of what things you would need for it, there are a lot of improvements like what would be the best screen, the best battery, 3d printed parts and bracets for your L and R buttons, all in one PCBs (that have already audio, controller, and Audio wheel) those ones need less sodering, but anyways... if you make mistakes dont get frustrated, just use the oportunity to learn something and try it again :D good luck

@jackjeanblanc44726 жыл бұрын
wermy you do have a point there.
@SianaGearz6 жыл бұрын
I think that thing's worthless. It's just a thyristor (dimmer) regulated soldering iron - ZD99 costs just $15, and while it doesn't have an identical handle, the working principle is the same. They don't have actual temperature control, you just set a portion of power, which means they always burn up their tips, and they often lift pads like a better station would not, or you touch the ground plane and the soldering iron gets stuck on it because all the heat has been pulled away and it doesn't know what to do, and for someone who isn't TOO well versed, it's just a lot of frustration and hassle. I think whole Weller brand is a bad recommendation, you should be prepared to pay about twice as much as for a Hakko with equivalent functionality, means, for a given budget, you're getting a worse product. And of course Chinese Hakko knockoffs are just hard to beat regarding value, though sometimes they come with lethal surprises. A middle point between nonames and Hakko is perhaps Aoyue. Oh and maybe check out Bakon 950D, i have a similar kit-built KSGER or STC-T12 and that is wonderful.

Hello. May i ask everyone who 😁. Why do we need to use appropriate tools and equipment in doing electrical and electronic repairs?
@californiakayaker6 жыл бұрын
Three things right off. 1 Meter. It should have an auto shut down, and I have been in situations where measurements were stipulated to be "True RMS". so, just get a meter that has both. I have an Amprobe that does both, but, Why not get another option while filling both objectives , for less money. Third opting which I've found to be REALLY handy is a Clamp Meter. You can get a Clamp meter , true rms, dc current, auto shut off, for very little. In May 2017 I paid $30 for my UT210E and its an amazing tool. 2. A hot air station. For right around $50 you can be ready to do everything you would do with a 30 dollar soldering station plus be able to use "solder paste" and mount super small smd surface mount components. You can also remove Surface Mount smd components. Worth every penny. You'll need a good pair of tweezers for it. 3 a couple of cheap gadgets from ebay . Get the DSO138 oscilloscope. You will need to spend about $150 or more to beat this cheap instrument. It works very well. Don't get the kit. ALSO, get one of the cheap component testers. The kit is ok with this one. Amazing what you can find out about components with it. They have a screen that shows you (identifies) most semiconductors, diodes, measures capacitors, and many other components !

Hi wermy! New sub here. I am fascinated by your RetroPie projects. My Dad has always been into electronics and when I was a little girl he and I did some little "projects" together (I basically watched him make stuff) Unfortunately now he's got terminal cancer and I want us to do a project together for old times and memories. I really want to put together a Game Boy Zero but I have no soldering experience minus a few things he showed me when I was a little girl. I don't think he's strong enough to do more than just teach me soldering and guide me through a build so I'd need it to be very simple. Would Kite's board fit the bill? And if so, how do I get my hands on one?
