Well, decades ago, a lot of people didn't have any kind of "gaydar" at all. Millions of little old ladies were completely shocked when Liberacci died of AIDS and the Enquirer wrote a story about how he was gay. I think any compliment from Herzog should be taken as a high honor. Most Germans don't do flattery and he's a fairly extreme example of this forthright, plainly honest way of speaking that can be common in German culture. This is one of the things that many Americans have a hard time adapting to in Germany. We tend to say nice things just to be nice. It's just the "polite thing to do." Plus, Herzog is one of the best directors of all time. So, yes, I totally agree.

It is odd though, because Herzog's work is often very abstract and will reveal something that on its surface one would never have gleaned said theme or message from, i.e., "ecstatic truth" which does counter what he says here with regards to a chair just being a chair. I've met Herzog and what he says about his lack of irony is very true. I had completed his Rogue Film School and made a very British and sarcastic comment upon receiving my certificate of participation that I would "treasure it forever". Immediately, completely missing the ironic intonation of my voice, he looked at me with dead seriousness in his eyes and said "Don't. It is nothing but a worthless piece of paper.".... Haha.

My assessment is that Herzog is a great, understated showman. And a bit of a prankster ie: the story of Kinski pulling a gun on him, the "sniper" attack which he didn't want to bother to report, the great mockumentary "Incident at Loch Ness". I think what is going on is that Herzog has a brilliant, dry sense of humor and he fools most of us to believe him. I enjoy every time he does this.

He was describing how things are literal for him, and then went on to say that stuff like sexual preference don't matter to him so he doesn't notice unless it's super obvious. He doesn't care about anything that doesn't really change how he interacts with someone, and gender/sexual identity fall into that category.
