In 1979, Les Blank took a detour to film German filmmaker Werner Herzog honoring a vow he made to Errol Morris that he (Herzog) would eat his shoe if Morris ever actually made one of his films he was forever talking about. Stung to action, Morris directed Gates of Heaven and Herzog, true to his word, returned to Berkeley to consume one of his desert boots at the UC Theater. Blank's film documents Herzog's strongly expressed belief that people must have the gutts to attempt what they dream of.

In a recent interview Herzog denied having 'mellowed' in his old age, but I think the evidence speaks for itself.

It's funny that for the past 35 years, and probably the 35 years before that, people have been thinking that technology, especially TV, is ruining us. The very point of technology is to better ourselves, to better our lives and yet: Apparently it makes us dumber Apparently it makes us weaker Apparently it makes us slower Apparently it makes us bad But in that time: We've advanced dramatically in our understanding of science and maths We've broken so many of our records, both sporting and academic We've come closer than ever to unifying the world We've become stronger, smarter and faster. As for being bad? Good and bad are human classifications. Humans will always be the same amount of good and bad, because for as long as humans are the ones classifying, our moral average will remain neutral. And it's all thanks to our ability to make tools. From the simple hammer to the television, technology has always been helping us. We've always been helping ourselves.

protercool It's like any technology or tool: overuse is generally not good for us. Moderation in most, if not all things. (Not sure if being punched in the face a moderate number of times is a good idea.)

Why does it matter how much we use it though? And the more important question, what makes people thing that we are using it too much? It is a part of who we are, it's like complaining that someone reads too much. Or even that someone uses their fingers too much. It is something we made to help us, an extension of ourselves. (Bare in mind that I am talking about technology in general, yes you can definitely use the television too much and some people definitely do. There will always be those who do too much of one single activity though, tech or no.)

+protercool I think it comes down to whether technology is being used as an extension of pre-existing abilities or whether it is being used as a crutch to take over those abilities. Like you said above, humanity has seen dramatic advances in our understanding of the world around us, and a lot of that is because of the technology that allowed us to observe and communicate in ways that weren't possible before. At the same time, there was a fair bit of the population that used technological advances as a way to merely pacify their boredom, which intrinsically isn't a bad thing, but at what point does that pacifier become a distraction from learning and growing as a human being (ie stunted social skills from primarily communicating in brevity facelessly online)? So in and of itself, technology is bad, but some of the ways it can be abused could be socially detrimental.
