I just watched two of your gouache videos, and they have been so helpful. I've been trying to paint with gouache many times over several years, and I always gave up in frustration. Today, for the first time, I managed to paint in a way that makes sense to me. Did I make a masterpiece? No. But the process was fun, I knew what was going on, and the result when dry looked pretty similar to what I expected. What I learned from your videos: 1. How helpful it is to work on a flat mixing area instead of a well, because it's easier to identify and adjust the consistency. Yes, the paint dries faster, but it's easier to re-wet, and easier to use the different stages of dry-to-wet within the area to regain the right consistency. 2. How to identify the right consistency, and how to maintain that consistency throughout the painting process. If the paint flows after you stopped moving it, it's too wet. After that explanation, I tried to identify the other end of the spectrum, and I think it's this: If your brush makes a mark in the paint instead of moving it around, it's too thick. 3. That you want to mix enough, yes, but not so much that you lose control over the consistency. For me, this went together with using a flat mixing area. I had a whole well filled with paint, and although it never dried completely, it was never the right consistency either. 4. Don't paint with big strokes. Use a small-medium brush to gently place a few strokes, then re-apply paint before continuing. Videos showing people painting in long smooth thin strokes are probably of a smaller painting than I realised. Plus, those people had better skills and/or paints than me. 5. Gouache works better if you realise how it differs from watercolour. It helps to use cheaper paper with less or no sizing to decrease chances of reactivation. Also, as I learned from a different youtuber, cheaper stiffer brushes which hold less water help you control the paint both when mixing and applying to the paper. 6. Many youtubers use fancy gouache paints, and I think those work very differently from cheaper brands like Arteza and Himi/Miya/Arrtx. Watching someone like you using those cheaper brands to such great effect was both immensely helpful and inspiring. Obviously, you know all of this already. You were the teacher here. But I thought I'd write it out for myself and other viewers, and maybe it's valuable or at least interesting for you to read what aspects of your videos have been helpful and how. Again, thank you very much.

Thank you so much for your comment. I have not tried guache before (well very briefly when I started on my watercolour journey) but I'm thinking of trying them out again. I have a cheap brand set (very cheap) and some cheap watercolour paper that I will use to experiment on. It may not behave the same way as the more professional ones but I will get a feel for the paint at least. Your comments helped enormously on how to go about it. I will be copying your comment to my computer so I can head back to them as I go. Again thank you so much for sharing.

i LOVED the gouache history lesson!! it makes a lot more sense to me now. where i live, often "poster paints" are marketed for children as washable paints and are usually quite cheap (usually $1 per jar or sometimes less) and not as thick or creamy as student quality. it's used frequently in schools with young students who cannot be trusted not to make a mess with acrylics or try eating it. because they market it as such a distinctly different kind of paint, though, most of us don't realize that poster paints ARE in fact gouache, because very rarely do you find artist quality poster paint and if you do they still tend to have a much more watery texture than artist quality gouache does. the way they're marketed as well as formulated definitely adds to the confusion for some people, but i suppose it also adds a wide variety of options when looking for the ideal gouache for your art style!
@weronoyume5 жыл бұрын
Yes it is the same thing with tempera in Italy, since what you usually find around is for kids it doesn’t mean that you can’t find the artists grade version of it! I think that this medium became so underrated in past years because of this! People think it’s something just for kids! The more liquid form of gouache as you say it is often called poster color, but you can find them in tubes too! This is a proof that that name doesn’t necessarily determine the consistency that the paint is going to have, it’s just another name for gouache! They work the same! Of course you can find the one that’s not good quality but that doesn’t mean that all poster colors are bad quality gouache as people sometimes say...

I do have Gouache at home for a while, a student set from MIYA and the professional Gouache from Winsor and Newton, but I am still struggling to approach it in a satisfying way for myself. It is breathtaking to see your progress and the soft transition and blending you achieved! I hope to learn more from you, keep making those videos.

You blend do beautifully with gouache! I have the most trouble blending gouache because of how easily it reactivates and when I add just a bit of water it can look patchy. Is it really just the paper that helps you blend gouache? Do you have any more advice on blending gouache? It would be really helpful if you answered, thank you :)

Marvellous technique and wonderfully informative. Thank you for making a bunch of connections about the words we use for this. Is _guazzo_ really a synonym for _fango_ in modern Italian? My _Petit Robert_ tells me that the French _gouache_ comes from the Latin _aquatio_ - meaning to mix with water. _a-cu-A-ti-o_ becomes _gu-AZZ-o,_ which becomes _gou-ACHE_ in French. The dictionary also give the French synonym, _détremper,_ coming from the Latin _distemperare,_ meaning to dilute a substance with liquid. In French, we say _trempé_ for the English word _soaked._ The result of _détremper_ is called a _détrempe,_ or _tempera_ in modern Italian. Which is what gives English the word tempera. So you've shown me that, etymologically speaking, it really is the same thing. Thank you also for the info about « poster paints ». In preschool, they gave us something they called « poster paints », but unfortunately this was cheap paint diluted with a lot of white. So when they told us to mix the three primaries to get black, the best we could do was a dull brown. Now I understantd the true meaning of the phrase. And it makes sense that this is what the artists of Studio Ghibli use.

from what i have seen , with gouache , and have been learning, is that the better quality gouache paints have better lightfastness ratings , as opposed to poster colors or what is called tempera .. tempera and poster colors are used a lot with animation, comic book art, ghibli art, etc .. those are all usually not going to be sold as pieces of original artwork, but will be reproduced.. lightfastness isn't an issue in those cases ., i've been painting with gouache for about a year now( i've been watercolorist most of my life )... i love it so much , for all the ways that it is so different from watercolors , in feel and in the process of painting .. i'm "norakag " on IG, in case you'd like to see.. i'm glad to find your channel and loved watching you paint this piece.. lovely work 👍👍 grazie tanto

What do you find is the difference in acrylic and classic guache.
@HungryForTastyFoodAndComicArt2 жыл бұрын
@@1toshi32 Acrylic gouache has larger & coarser pigment grains than acrylics (lie gouache) but mainly acrylic binder rather than gums arabic or honey, so lifework and hatching is not as opaque as trad. gouache. This differs across brands (e.g. jo Sonja’s and Holbein), but still applies (I’ve used most brands). Generally acrylic gouache will be more viscous and the brushing qualities won’t be as “helpful” as traditional gouache. But for transparency-layering, a top shelf brand like Holbein can yield remarkable results.
@1toshi322 жыл бұрын
@@HungryForTastyFoodAndComicArt So do you prefer the non acrylic gouache for your work? I'm guessing since you are using winsor and newton that you prefer the traditional gouache. Loved the end result by the way and fascinating to watch the process. Thank you for uploading this video.

Hi! I've not seen many people use gouache in such a realistic manner, and it looks amazing! I just wanted to add one thing about the difference between gouache and poster paints (I don't know much about tempera so I won't pronounce myself on that). Poster paints tend to not be as lightfast and are therefore more often used by designers and illustrators who will anyway scan and maybe rework their art, while gouache is often more lightfast, making it more the more appropriate choice for artists who make original paintings intended to resist through time. But as you said, each brand is different and uses different pigments, so we should anyway check the lightfastness of the paints we want to buy and use this distinction between poster paints and gouache more as a guide than a rule. Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of your gouache work!
@weronoyume5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think it depends since poster paints are anyway pigment based I don’t think that is correct to just say that they are not lightfast because lightfast is a characteristics that depends for most part solely on the pigments that the brand use!It’s always good to make personal lightfast tests anyway because even professional grade paint can be not lightfast depending on the pigment characteristics!

I observed 2 ways of painting with gouache: 1. In layers, with 1 color at a time, and 2. Starting from anpoint and spreading, constantly blending in new colors (not in layers). Which is more suitable for different topics? If there is both nature and humans, and if I want to paint realism and not stylized, should I paint method 1 or 2? This was a very beautiful realistic portrait that you painted, thanks for the tutorial.

I just loved this video. I hope people learn something from it because in the west gouache is so misconceived. You definitely made James Gurney proud :) Btw, greetings from Greece where we use the exact same terminology and techniques you described in the video. As a matter of fact, tempera is our national medium (because of our huge tradition in Byzantine iconography, where the technique originates), either based on the egg+oil or the gum arabic(+opacifier) vehicle. It is what everyone paints with at schools (I learned about transparent watercolor after adulthood), which is probably the reason why winsor & newton (something like our unofficial national provider by now), charges their 15ml tubes of gouache for 1.5 to 2.5€ (including cadmiums and cobalts)!
