And then, in 2003, we get: Freddy Vs. Jason! Yay! Oops...maybe it should've been titled the other way around, as in Jason Vs. Freddy, in the sense that Jason wipes the proverbial floor with Freddy, when it comes to the kill count! They make up this movie for these two legendary horror icons, and Freddy gets...one kill/soul? One? Really? Meanwhile, Jason kills indiscriminately, slashing left and right, like the Grim Reaper on a boatload of lethal steroids!!! By the midway point of the movie, Freddy realizes what a horrendous mistake he's made, by bringing Jason in on the killing spree, but it's too little, and DEFINITELY too late to stop Jason, which has been on an absolutely incredible path of death and destruction, ever since he joined Freddy in the first place! Now, Freddy is stuck with the fact that he's NEVER going to be able to get rid of Jason! Nice going, Freddy! To make matters worse, a human being (& a beautiful one at that!!!), does Freddy in by decapitating him! Or so we thought... which is proven wrong when Jason comes up out of the lake, holding Freddy's head in his right hand...and then...Freddy looks at the audience, grins, and winks an eye at us, signifying that it'll never be the end for him!!! (I still wonder...as for Freddy and Jason, what's next for these two)?!?!?

I always thought the reason the fire destroyed New Freddy at the end was because the previous story the demon had inhabited was Hansel & Gretel as the witch. Wes did say that the demon has been changing form through stories down through the ages, and Heather's discomfort about reading that story to Dylan was a subtle suggestion of a connection between the two stories. And since the witch in Hansel & Gretel died by being locked in an oven, so did New Freddy.

I am a fan of New Nightmare. I think Wes did a great job making a movie for the same people who were teens when the original came out. While the original played to the teens fears like adults who are in denial of larger problems this movie deals with issues this teens, now adults perhaps with kids of their own worry about. Themes of losing the one you love, being left with a child going through mental issues, having people question your parenting or downright blaming you for their condition, the fear of losing your child, seeing your child in a dangerous situation (crossing a busy highway) etc etc etc. I think the movie was perhaps a little too adult for most fans at the time and was seen as straying too far from the original formula. Though given time I think most have warmed to it as a more mature take on Freddy, parenthood and the lore.
@ronaldshank75893 жыл бұрын
This wasn't a "bad" movie by any stretch of the imagination. However, it scored the lowest amount of money in terms of ticket sales at the Movie Theaters. It only made $18,000,000+. Even Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, made at least $22,000,000+ at the Box Office.
@The_Texorcist3 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldshank7589 I think the movie suffered at the box office because of several factors. First was it followed Freddy’s Dead which probably let many fans down so that caused them to have less faith in the next installment. The other is by the time New Nightmare came out the slasher genre was going through a huge slump, nowhere near what it was in the 80’s. Heck that’s why people said Craven resurrected the genre with Scream.

It seems like that, at the time, you had to come up with edgier storylines, no matter what Genre you were into. Out of curiosity, where do you stand on Nightmare On Elm Street 2010? Just to let you know, I actually liked it a lot better than NOES 5, 6, and Freddy Vs. Jason. Freddy Vs. Jason...come on! Jason's out there, knockin' 'em dead, and all Freddy can do is run his mouth. He doesn't know when to shut up! And-Here"s the kicker for me-After all that, Freddy gets a grand total of-Wait for it!!!-ONE VICTIM!!!!! Who put this disaster together?!? Come on, man! Freddy gets one kill... seriously? My mind is blown. All of those years of waiting for Freddy Krueger to grace us with his Fingerknifed charm, and all he can do is get one victim, and run his yap! It was totally pathetic! TOTALLY!!!!!!!!

@@ronaldshank7589 my feelings about the 2010 remake are complicated. For me it was a mixed bag. Let me start off with the positive, loved the look of the dream sequences. The thing I didn’t like though was the “did he or didn’t he” Freddy plot, it’s Freddy of course he did. As to the most conflicted thing… Jackie Earle Haley and the Freddy makeup. I get where they were going for with the makeup I get why they did, going realistic gives him a grounded and unique look. The issue is that it just didn’t really film well. As to Haley, he is a great actor and I think it was a wise move for him to not try to mimic England. The issue is that at a certain point ya have trouble separating the actor from the role. When people think Dracula they think Lugosi, Frankenstein they think Karloff… Robert Englund is Freddy. Any other actor no matter how talented he is will understandably be compared to the one that made the character popular (and it isn’t going to be a favorable comparison).
@ronaldshank75893 жыл бұрын
@@The_Texorcist As per your last paragraph, and especially the last sentence, I agree. It is sad that people have the tendency to feel that way about people trying, if you will, to "Fill other people's shoes". I know that, in 9 out of 10 cases, it doesn't work. However, I still feel very strongly that Jackie Earle Haley's version of Freddy Krueger was actually better. I wonder what the result would have been, had Robert Englund reprised his role for this movie? Personally, based on the somewhat "Corny" performances found in NOES 5, 6, and even the latter part of NOES 4, it could've been even more disastrous. These are only my thoughts, though, and I see that, even with the weak spots found in the latter parts of several of the Nightmare On Elm Street Series, it's definitely one of the better, and to a degree, classic, Horror Franchises of all time!

I'd say that this is probably my all-time favorites of the Nightmare Franchise. It had such a revitalizing flair to it; with it's atmosphere and proper build-up of Freddy crossing into reality. But there are some things about the movie that I didn't like. First and foremost being - Freddy's appearance has probably been the most frightening its ever been, what with his sunken in eyes and the way his skin looks torn open than just simply burnt. However the gaps of his flesh where the muscle is exposed...the muscles themselves look too fake; its the one part of the make-up where you can tell it's part of a latex mask. I do like most everything else; the trench coat does make him look more frightening; but the hat being green has always puzzled me. I guess it just stands out too much from its original brown-counterpart. Other things I didn't like was how many questions the movie brought up. Like with Robert Englund...what exactly happened to him halfway through the movie? Can he and Freddy exist in the same world together? Did Freddy take his place when he crossed over, causing Robert to disappear? Did Freddy possess him once he did cross-over? I feel like the movie is missing a lot of story that would explain this, but it was cut for time. Finally, despite how great an addition to the franchise this film is, and how scary and brutal Freddy can be...I can't help but get a sense of it being so "impersonal" compared to the rest of the series. Freddy being an actual demon that can be trapped in Stories is a good idea...on paper. But keeping that in mind, its almost like the villain of the movie is a Demon that's cosplaying as Freddy, and not Freddy himself. It's a bit head scratching. Plus the way the Demon is killed in a furnace is kind of...lack luster.

There are a few elements from this movie that appear in the Australian Horror film The Babadook. A mother dealing with the death of her husband. Her child acting peculiar, The child likes bedtime stories and it plays into the story, Child climbs to top of playground structure only to fall, Child has seizure-like fit that ends child in hospital, in which the transition from the fit to the hospital is a light being shown in the child's eye, an instance where The Babadook figure impersonates the dead husband like Freddy does during the funeral scene. Other comparisons are from the original Nightmare on Elm Street, i.e. the boogeyman talks over the phone, appearing at night while you sleep, and the ending where the main character stands up to the boogeyman "I take back every bit of power I gave you." Did any of you notice the similarities? ;:/

The kid is by far the worst part of this movie. Otherwise, it is a fantastic piece of film! I love New Nightmare! When I was just starting out, 19 years old and living on my own, it was one of the few DVD's I had in my apartment. That was part of that terrible experience that I actually look back on fondly.

Only a passing mention if the kids trex plush how sad. I always saw it as the demon freddy has such little power because the kid had so much faith in his dream protector a friggen trex. Could you imagine how bad ass that would be too see.

Her husband being a effects artist actually means he was likely tired. You ever heard how in "The Thing" the lead artist almost died of exhaustion getting the effects right? Those dudes work countless hours.

Plus the immense pressure they're under as a movie can sink or swim because of effects. Didn't know that about that lead artist though. Crazy.

As much as I adore this movie, there is just one thing that confused me. As much as I loved Julie's death scene, how did Freddie get to her when she was awake? How did he get to Julie through Dylan's dreams?
@Brutalyte6166 жыл бұрын
Freddy's powers use dreams as a focusing point, but it's not really what kills you. In essence, he is a wraith physically assaulting the dreaming party as they lay sleeping, which is why he can actually inflict damage to them or move their bodies around instead of just making them die of shock in their sleep or something. The caveat is that he draws power from belief and fear, and that he can only act within the context of a dream, as that as how he anchors himself to the physical world; the dreams are an image of what he's actually doing viewed through the lens of the dreamer's mind's eye. In Dylan's case, he was asleep on his feet, meaning Demon Freddy could attack Julie because she was both in close proximity to Dylan and part of his waking dream.

@user-dr2yz8um3d2 ай бұрын
30 years old!!! The thing that sets this apart is that it’s one of the rare horror films that’s fully self-aware And this would set the stage for Craven’s next successful ‘Scream’ series fully taking advantage of the meta self aware humorous approach deconstructing the genre After 6 films that started back in 1984 the ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ movies started to change Craven at one point became very upset that they took his original creation and turned it into a joke But with this film and New Line Cinema he finally gets to bring Freddy Krueger back to his roots making him truly terrifying again It’s also a reunion with original scream queen herself Heather Langenkamp playing herself as well as producers Sarah Risher, Bob Shaye, the late John Saxon, and co-star Robert Englund ‘New Nightmare’ manages to stand out amongst the other sequels being it doesn’t connect to any of them and they fully acknowledge that Heather has stayed out of it despite its popularity and box office success The movie is appropriately scary taking its time to reveal this new version of Freddy, Englund does wonders playing dual roles as himself, the makeup effects are astounding, and the writers come up with a massive mythology regarding this slasher villain Tracy Middendorf as the babysitter Julie is so darn likeable that its a shame what happens to her later The score is also effectively scary and there’s a theme of Hansel & Gretel sprinkled throughout creating a sense of dread as well as atmosphere next to more psychological thrills The ending is also the icing on the cake wrapping up this long battle of good vs evil It’s a shame despite the positive reception this ended up crashing at the box office being forgotten But this paved the way for Craven to make a career comeback in horror with ‘Scream’ following two years later and this movie has definitely gotten more attention with time thanks to its meta layered concepts and many callbacks to the franchise, it was more than just the money it was about finding a creative way to justify its place in the series A clever way to blur the line between fantasy and reality in the Hollywood landscape playing with fan reactions plus moral outrage Heather Langenkamp and Robert Englund give it their all falling back into their respective roles and making the rivalry come alive like they did back in 1984 Thankfully it also ended the franchise on a much better note after ‘Freddy’s Dead’ was met with dismal reception while also setting the first template for legacy follow ups Craven succeeds making his famous creation scary once more

I thought you'd skip this one because it has nothing to do it the rest of the franchise or Freddy Vs Jasons continuity.
@backtoearth19838 жыл бұрын
It is still part of the franchise regardless, much as Friday 4 is, even though it is not Jason Vorhees (Though ironical a Vorhees is still present due to the RL name of a cast member)
@skycommander21538 жыл бұрын
Don't you mean Friday the 13th Part 5? Yeah, it might not be Jason but it's still part of the timeline. New Nightmare is seperate from it
@backtoearth19838 жыл бұрын
Yeah I mean part five. New Nightmare acknowledges the existence of Freddy just like 5 acknowledges the existence of Jason. they are as valid/invalid as eachother. If anything NN is more valid as it contains the titular character, where as 5 does not.
@skycommander21538 жыл бұрын
Freddy exists in the film as a fictional movie character the creature doing the actual killing in New Nightmare is technically speaking not Freddy it's a demon in the guise of Freddy we see it's true form when it's killed at the end. F13 Part 5 on the other hand takes place in the same continuity following the events of parts 1-4 even including Tommy Jarvis to establish the continuity while, New Nightmare on the other hand it's Heather playing herself not Nancy making it it's own thing and not technically a part of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise's continuity.
