As a dentist that has practiced for over 20 years, I have to correct the part about how long it takes a human dentist to prep (or drill) on a tooth for a crown. It only takes 5-15 min for a dentist to do the drilling. Modern dental offices can sometimes fabricate the ceramic crown in the office while the patient waits, and complete the entire treatment in one visit. The longest part of the procedure is fabricating the crown, whether it is done in the office or sent to a dental lab.

@sunocorner I had GPT-4o give me details and your pointer is right! The article seems to consider the full process for a temp crown for some reason: GPT-4o: “[…] Here's the process broken down into a bullet point list: - **Initial Examination & Consultation**: The dentist examines the tooth, discusses options, and answers questions. (10 minutes) - **Numbing the Tooth**: Local anesthesia is applied to numb the tooth and surrounding area. (10 minutes) - **Tooth Preparation**: The dentist reshapes the tooth by removing enamel to make room for the crown. (30 minutes) - **Impression Taking**: A mold or digital scan of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth is taken for the crown. (15 minutes) - **Temporary Crown Placement**: A temporary crown is placed to protect the prepared tooth until the permanent crown is ready. (20 minutes) - **Adjustments**: The dentist checks the fit and bite of the temporary crown and makes necessary adjustments. (10 minutes) - **Post-Procedure Instructions**: The dentist provides care instructions for the temporary crown and schedules the next appointment. (5 minutes) - **Buffer/Overrun Time**: Time allowed for unexpected delays, additional adjustments, or patient comfort. (20 minutes) **Total Time**: 120 minutes […]”

I have considered robotic dentistry, at first human controlled. It's very obvious for the patient to sit up comfortably and the doc not being in an awkward position plus tiny quality cameras that can get anywhere, good light and tiny instruments. If you consider what scales we make chips, the work on and in a single tooth can be ultra precise rather than a clumsy hand with a power drill working blind and then taking a look at the damage. Indeed you can take it a step further and take it home as daily hygiene where a little frame with rails goes around and inspects the surface with extreme precision plus multispectral identification of any microscopic bacterial presense such that cavities and gum disease can never happen. it's not a big function space to examine teeth and gums so it could be fully automated with AI and be flawless as a home device. Little high pressure jets to clean, alternate liquid to disinfect when necessary. Should cavities happen it's not a big stretch to imagine the home device could microscopically repair it. Put dentists out of business completely.

Same, after a few years of debugging, I'd be OK with having my teeth done by a robot. Also, dog language is posture and movement, not "woof woof". I don't know if that person whose words are mentioned is that clueless or if they are oversimplifying hugely, but of course, if you can't be bothered to learn to communicate naturally with your dog, you can have a computer do it for you. It does make you an inferior dog parent in my book, but it's still better than being completely oblivious.

I have a beagle and their barking is a way of communicating. I think that some people don't understand what "linguistic" means. My dog has many different kind of howls and barks and I know exactly what they mean. To say that is not a way of communicating is simply wrong. There are many ways other beings communicate with each other. And barking too is a way of communication.

Interesting to see OpenAI moving into chip manufacturing. I am interested in how much NVidia patent leasing will play into this. I also suspect that Microsoft is more than likely working on a secret project to develop AI chips as well given their push into AI with Windows 11 and Recall. While typing this thought out, I fully expect in the next 5 years for the new iPhones of that time to contain Apple AI chips. AI chips will likely be either codependent on traditional CPUs until AI gets so advanced we just end up seeing AI chips completely replace traditional CPUs or a new AI/Traditional CPU hybrid -- Animal communication is going to be beyond amazing and cool! -- Im not too sold on AI robots just yet but maybe down the line I will

As humans who live with dogs know, barks can be used as a form of communication, but they aren't language. Hunger, pain, affection, curiosity -- sure, but dogs don't use concepts the way humans do. They can understand certain words, at least in a broad sense or by tone, but that's a mostly unidirectional path. We need something more like those big panels of buttons, each of which generates a word when pressed by the dog (or cat), but that doesn't require years of training. Including smells and auditory inputs would also be crucial.
@wonmoreminute
@wonmoreminute 2 ай бұрын
Exactly. Your dog (or cat) communicates with you in its own unique way. And anyone with multiple pets knows they each have unique personalities and their own ways of telling you what they want and need. And communication goes both ways. They respond to you based on your actions, mood, etc. as much as you respond to them based on theirs. Most communication is through body language, actions, eye contact, pets, and even facial expressions. It’s knowing when they want affection and when they want their own space. Knowing when they’re playful and when they’re hungry, tired, frustrated, or just simply happy and content. Thats what makes being a pet owner great. I’m not minimizing AI’s capabilities, but communication with your pets is not the place for AI. I don’t need AI to communicate with my wife either (maybe my kids, though 😂). However, AI can possibly help us communicate with intelligent species like whales that also use language and have extensive vocabularies.

your cat/dog understands more english than you might think as well, they also have their own words for things, my cat ALWAYS meows in a specific way before he has to puke... like... oh crap in cat language, my dog has various tones of bark but alot of her communication is non verbal
@wonmoreminute
@wonmoreminute 2 ай бұрын
@@frogz That’s true, but their vocabulary doesn’t correspond with concepts and ideas. For all intents and purposes, it’s equivalent to a grunt that we might make, or a baby’s cry. It’s not a word attached to a concept, and it’s also not universal. It’s debatable whether dogs and cat’s have ideas or if they conceptualize at all, although I get the sense with mine that every once in a while they have brief moments of enlightenment, multiple seconds they string together where they’re about to realize something… and then lose it to their child like ADHD (living in the moment) and reflexive instincts. But even if they did, they don’t have a precise and universal language with internal dialogue that they can also use to share ideas and concepts with other dogs and cats… or with humans using AI.

Great discussion! As dog owners, we know they do what works to get what they need from us, and to show love and appreciation to us. But they can also act in unwanted or confusing ways that require training to correct. So clearly they aren't necessarily communicating or understanding like us. We also know that they communicate between themselves using smell, body language, and sound. We know that they can literally smell fear. Still, the potential of leveraging AI in combination with various sensors is very interesting. I'm glad that research is being done in this area.

Actually there was a lab that achieved net energy output from fusion. Researchers at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California achieved a significant milestone in nuclear fusion. They reported a net energy gain from a fusion reaction for the first time. This achievement involved using 192 laser beams to heat and compress a tiny fuel pellet containing deuterium and tritium, leading to a fusion reaction that produced more energy than the lasers consumed. The specific experiment, conducted in December 2022, delivered 2.05 megajoules of energy to the fuel pellet, which then released 3.15 megajoules of energy-exceeding the input energy and marking a crucial step towards practical fusion energy. This event, often referred to as achieving "ignition," signifies that the fusion process can produce more energy than it consumes, although it does not yet account for the total energy required to operate the entire system. This breakthrough brings the scientific community closer to the goal of harnessing fusion as a viable and abundant source of clean energy, though significant challenges remain before it can be commercialized and used for power generation on a large scale. For more detailed information, you can refer to the articles from Popular Science and Nature.

The updates on Sam Altman and OpenAI's plans for developing their own AI chip in collaboration with Broadcom are groundbreaking. This move could challenge Nvidia's current dominance in the AI hardware market. The ambitious projects like a $100 billion data center and a fusion power plant further highlight OpenAI's far-reaching vision. The Syntax of existence appears to be expressed as wave functions within the semantic space of linguistics. The act of contextualization for linguistics requires an autonomic wave function collapse in order to define, and provide meaning, to a given concept within a vector of word embeddings. That theoretical collapse of wave function could be the observation of quantum action within the mind's psychological framework. This conceptual framework builds upon the foundation of word embeddings -- vector representation of words in a multidimensional semantic space -- and expresses them at a quantum level, opening up a new frontier in the comprehension of linguistics and cognitive sciences. Put more bluntly? LLMs are not conscious, but they will allow us to probe consciousness to the point of mapping out the entire corpus of linguistics within a given biological entity's lived experience. AKA : "You've unlocked the Universal Translator"
@RealStonedApe
@RealStonedApe 2 ай бұрын
The proposed theory linking quantum mechanics, linguistics, and consciousness is fundamentally flawed on multiple levels. At its core, it inappropriately applies quantum mechanical concepts to macroscopic systems, with no evidence that quantum effects play any significant role in neural processes or language. This represents a common misuse of quantum theory in fields where it's not applicable, leading to misleading conclusions. The theory provides no experimental data or observable phenomena to support its claims, instead relying heavily on metaphorical comparisons rather than testable hypotheses. This lack of empirical grounding is a critical weakness in any scientific proposal. Furthermore, the theory commits a category error by conflating distinct domains - physics, linguistics, and cognitive science - without justification. It assumes that similarities in terminology imply deeper connections between unrelated phenomena, a logical fallacy that undermines its credibility. The reduction of linguistic complexity to "wave functions" and "collapses" grossly oversimplifies language, ignoring established linguistic theories and the nuanced nature of meaning and context. This oversimplification does a disservice to the rich field of linguistics and fails to account for the complex realities of language use and understanding. The theory's claims about Large Language Models (LLMs) being able to "probe consciousness" misrepresent their capabilities and nature. LLMs are statistical models of language patterns, not tools for investigating consciousness. This misunderstanding of AI technology leads to unfounded speculations about its potential applications. The theory also engages in circular reasoning by assuming what it seeks to prove, presupposing quantum-like behavior in cognition without establishing a basis for this assumption. A significant issue with the proposed framework is its unfalsifiability. It offers no clear way to test or potentially disprove its claims, placing it outside the realm of scientific theory. This lack of testability is a hallmark of pseudoscientific thinking. Moreover, the theory disregards extensive work in neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and linguistics, proposing radical ideas without addressing why existing frameworks are inadequate. This dismissal of established research undermines its credibility within the scientific community. The misuse of technical terms like "wave function," "collapse," and "quantum action" gives a false impression of scientific rigor. These terms are used loosely and incorrectly, demonstrating a lack of deep understanding of the quantum mechanics principles being invoked. Finally, the theory makes an unjustified leap from speculative linguistic ideas to grandiose claims about consciousness and "Universal Translators" without providing a clear pathway or mechanism for achieving these ambitious goals. While the theory presents an imaginative blend of concepts from different fields, its lack of scientific rigor, empirical support, and logical coherence renders it ultimately unsubstantial. Such theories can be harmful as they divert attention and resources from more promising avenues of research in linguistics, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence. Instead of advancing our understanding of language and consciousness, this kind of pseudoscientific thinking muddles the waters and potentially misleads those not well-versed in the relevant fields.

as for making custom chips, that feels largely premature, especially given that tesla has tried for years and failed. nvidia's products are currently very expensive, 30grand for a single chip with 80GB ram, that's a lot but it seems that particular ram type is currently the bulk of the cost. I just bought 32GB more for my computer and it was little more than 50$. An H100 chip probably only costs around 300$ from TSMC so there is potential for cost reduction. Even if a chip was 4x slower with cheap ram, that's still 7500$ "worth" so 300$ chip and 200$ ram... long way up to 7500$. And why not put a ton of ram in it, say 2TB for 2500$ and then maybe that will have the desired bandwidth. Not sure if that strategy would work but definitely worth considering. I wouldn't get too bogged down with hardware fab though, maybe apply pressure to others to get it done to break this high premium monopoly and then focus on algorithms because that's where it's at. Elon is buying a ton of current hardware on the belief that current paradigm will get there but it wont. It's more a case of when you have the algo the hardware is the trivial part.

They practically do the exact same thing that you can see here. I am extremely picky, when it comes to dentist, as two made me crooked teeth, one of them prepared me a crooked crown and told me, as one of my teeth is crooked, the other needs to be crooked too... For a young woman, it was horrible for me, I was 20 years old and fell on my face, which broke one tooth. I still can't believe the reasoning of the dentist and they clearly could see that I hardly could hold back my tears. It looked horrible! I have the weird feeling that an AI wouldn't have made a crooked crown...

Robo dentist - likely much better than a normal dentist. Probably should be monitored by a dentist with a cutoff switch for both the dentist and the patient, but still, much better. People are silly about computers. You're surely safer in an autopilot Tesla than your average Uber ride. Today. But automated error is intolerable, while human error is what it is. People are silly, and regulators are 10 times as bad. In the 90s I worked in automated pap smear screening. Just better than people, way back then, and it wasn't not even close. A little processing limited at the time, but today, human screening should be considered malpractice. But checking, very little of the US market uses automated screening. Sad. It costing lives.

Chip hsrdware lithography etc etc is where the government must be involved and be very restrictive in this avenue. Even with our allys that refuse open access free flow of information education to their own citizens . Industrial revolution could Lean on nature's fine tuned limits but here this ability to simulate by using tune weighted access to chips is a real threat to security

I would be willing to let the robot AI do a crown, 15 minutes and it probably is much better than the dentist. I've lost 3 crowns in my life so um, sign me up!

I wonder if some animals have an actual langauge. If so it should be possible to decode it at some point. Talking to a whale might be interessing. :) In turn if an animal is intelligent enough to speak, it might be no longer ethically justifiable to eat it...

08:09 we should use the "talk to dogs" technology to talk to animals which are killed in their billions each year. Pigs, cows, chickens etc maybe if we could see their emotions, their sentience we would think twice before funding the industry.

For the gap between broke boy AI and those with mad money to buy their own compute (GPUs) to develop an AI chip....any ICU is not that hard. Its sorely missing. Its just that the disparity of rich and poor is ever widening. Hell, a crowdsourcing movement to build a true, non-proprietory, open-source AI chip that's stored on a USB stick you can pick-up at Best Buy could exist. Apples M series chips are all touted as AI chips but they won't make a truly AI chip and instead want you to d**** around with CoreML/Metal just to get a percentage increase in offline PRIVATE AI.

Dog language interpreter. Count me sceptical. At least 3 problems (1) ground truth? (2) not all dogs communicate the same (3) context matters hugely. No doubt it’ll sell but will it be more than useless?

altman is using ai to develop the future of open ai. the ai altman is using to do this has yet to be released to the general public. ykno how you see ai teach itself to walk, then parkour etc over ten thousand bot years? imagine it doing the same thing but with business, like... open ai business strategies and r&d ;D it's what i'd do if i were sam and had sole access to the smartest nerd in the world for months before any other.

Absolutely not, no matter how advanced it gets, and not because I'm afraid of hacking or halucination because that will be propably low risks at some point, but when my tooth hearts I need a human to hate for it and when machine does it wrong who I should blame then? Hardware producer, software designer, or AI assistant? AI in general generates big issue of mixed responsibility in large scale, and the result is that no one is really responsible for his/hers job.

What is all this unnecessary fear? 50 years from now people are almost definitely going to be laughing at us for our hangups against stuff they consider totally everyday. We seriously need better robot surgeons... Too much of surgery these days is too invasive and takes too long to recover from. We need the ability to do organic 3D printing inside the body.

Some of us know pleasure as good as satisfaction & the non-living know it. They can measure what your doing. This is why I don't want humans to teach me cognition & quantum physics in the 21st century. Telepathic Empath - The non-living can sense and understand the emotions, thoughts, and feelings of others, even when they are unexpressed.
