West Coast Main Line Trains at Wigan North Western on May 15th 2024

2nd visit to Wigan North Western on the West Coast Main Line
Featuring services from Avanti West Coast, Northern and Transpennine Express plus some freight and as well as Northern services going in and out of nearby Wigan Wallgate
Wigan North Western first opened in 1838 as Wigan before it was renamed Wigan North Western in 1924
It's only 110 yards away from nearby Wigan Wallgate served by non electrified Northern services mainly to and from Blackburn, Stalybridge, Manchester Oxford Road via Salford Crescent to Headbolt Lane and Southport mainly provided by Class 150s and Class 156 Sprinters as well as Class 769s whilst the services to and from Leeds via the Calder Valley Line via Rochdale and alternatively Brighouse or Halifax are provided by Class 158s which terminate at Wigan Wallgate.
There was once a 3rd station called Wigan Central which was opened in 1892 by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway however was closed in 1964
Although on the platform layout on the West Coast Main Line may have 6 platforms however only 5 are in use with Platform 2 being one of 2 bay platforms was taken out of use when Platform 3 was extended.
Platform 1 is used by occasional services to Liverpool Lime Street via Newton-le-Willows services during weekday mornings as well all day Sunday services to and from Stalybridge and Manchester Victoria.
Platform 3 is a bay Platform used by trains services mainly morning or evening to and from Manchester Victoria as well as Empty Stock Northern Services reversing into Spring Branch Stabling Sidgs which is located to the South.
Platforms 4 and 5 used by Avanti West Coast services to and from London Euston to Blackpool North, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh which are mainly provided by Class 390 Pendolinos although at the time of filming testing was ongoing for new Class 805 and 807 Everos.
The Class 805s would enter service a few weeks after filming being used for services to North Wales and Birmingham New Street taking over the working diagrams done by the Class 221 Super Voyagers which 12 of them will move to CrossCountry.
The Class 807s will provide and share services to and from London Euston to Birmingham New Street, Liverpool Lime Street and Blackpool North which are still undergoing testing with both 805s and 807s being maintained at Oxley T.M.D near Wolverhampton.
Northern services provide a half hourly all stopper service via the City Line via St Helens Central to and from Liverpool Lime Street which terminate via Platform 6 with only a few in the morning and evening going via Newton-le-Willows on the Chat Moss Line.
Hourly services are provided beyond here to Blackpool North which are nowadays provided by Class 331s which replace the Class 319s in December 2023 and January 2024.
Transpennine Express services to and from Liverpool Lime Street to Lancaster, Oxenholme Lake District and Glasgow Central are only 2 trains a day provided by Class 397 Civitys.
From June 2025 this station will be served by Open Access Operator Grand Union which will provide 5 return services a day from London Euston to Stirling although as of filming their rolling stock for their fleet hasn't yet been announced.
