This is the best video I've found for teaching the basic steps and passes. It would be great if you made more like this. The other "Move of the week" and "Patterns & Moves" videos give some good ideas, but are way too fast paced for beginners and intermediates to grasp without repeated viewings.

A neat idea would be is to make a video of you dancing ONLY using these patterns to give newbies to WCS an idea what actual dancing looks like (with music) using only the basics. I have looked online and can't find a video of anyone dancing to music just using the basic patterns by themselves.

West Coast Swing Online I know many of us beginners are searching all over the internet for actual basic dance "routines" and looking for videos of anyone actually dancing using the basic 5-10 patterns. Guess what? We can't find a single one. You could link it to this video and say something like "send us your email address and we will send you a video link to all the patterns combined in a an actual dance with music..." Or, uh something like that (and you get another email address). :-)

Most songs tend to have an 8 beat pattern, yet most of the technique in this video are 6 count. How do I incorporate those 6 count moves to 8 count beat songs? i.e. what do I do for the 7,8 counts such that I am all setup to perform another move on the next "1" count. Is it just a "filler" 1-2 step in place?

Excellent tutorial. I have a question though. Is it common to have patterns with different step counts? (e. g. like the whip which has 8 counts). How does this affect the interpretation of the music? Additionally, how does the follower know when to triple step and when not?

Hello, yes it is very common. West coast swing has 6 and 8 count basics that then can extend into longer count variations. The way a follower knows, is by knowing their basic patterns very very well and having a good connection with their partner so they can tell what the leader wants them to do. Thanks. Brian! I am presently learning Swing Dance. I am a beginner follower and have been dancing most of the time with beginner leads. Your explanations have shed light on many doubts I had about this variety of dance. Since I am a follower, I have not choice but follow. I know some leads do the "rock step" in triple ECS and the single count ECS using different counts. Is the following way right? Triple Steps Swing 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6 (rock step) and for Single Step Swing 1,2-3,4, 5,6 (rock step). So both Triple Step and Single Step are 6-count dance like WCS. Some of the leads dance Single Step Swing as 3-count just like in Hustle. Is this considered wrong?

Some songs are more suitable for WCS than ECS though they can be used to dance both forms of dance. Thanks. Another question: the "and one" in Hustle is the same to the "rock and step" in Swing?

To answer this "the "and one" in Hustle is the same to the "rock and step" in Swing?" Yes they are very similar if you are a newer dancer, however as you get into more detail there are technical and timing differences between the two. The ECS rock step takes 2 beats and has a lilted/rhythmical movement where the hustle rock step is a smoother movement that only take 1 beat.

+Peggy Gabler Hi Peggy, I'm probably biased but I love West Coast Swing. Its pretty versatile across many different styles of songs. Both East and West require little dance floor space but WCS is typically slower moving that ECS. However it gets pretty tricky pretty fast. Hopefully this video will help you out!

Can WCS and ECS be danced to the same music? If so, how could WCS be a slower dance if it moves to the same rhythm as East Coast Swing: 2 walks and 2 triple steps?

Hi Ally! Good Question. Yes ECS & WCS could be danced to the same music. Lots of dances could be danced to the same music (hustle, cha cha, ecs & wcs could all be danced to the same tunes if needed) However as you look a little deeper at the speed of the music and the accents of the music, certain songs match certain dances much better. In my school, the teachers just teach patterns and do not emphasize counts. Long story short, do we count simple step east coast swing the same way as triple swing- both as six-count dance? Does single step in single step Swing has the same duration as the triple step? (1-2,3-4, rock step ( or 1hold, 2 hold, rock step) has the same duration as 1and 2, 3 and 4, rock step?) Ok I'll try my best to answer... ;-) Do we count simple step east coast swing the same way as triple swing- both as six-count dance? Answer: You would count it differently because there will be triple steps in regular ECS where as simple or single time swing will not have triple steps. In the triple step you will need to count the '&' beat ECS, 1&2, 3&4, 5, 6 vs single time swing, 12, 34, 5, 6 Does single step in single step Swing has the same duration as the triple step? Answer: yes you are correct! Hope that helps a bit! -Brian

@@dancelouisville4564 OK, I have watched you dance many times and you are one of the best. Before watching this basic video I watched the video about smoothness. One of the most visual things that you demonstrated is that the foot does not break contact (toe in this case) with the floor. However in this video your foot most definitely breaks contact with the floor. Was the constant contact thing a practice thing to improve smoothness, not meant to be in a real dance step, or what ??

Great video but i have à question about the count. When i count music un count 1 2 3 4, 5 6 7 8, but Here it's 1 2 3 4 5 6, so you finish in the middle of the count. so how do you do to get back on the 1 or 5. Are we supposed to do à 1 2 3 4 5 6 twice so that we do 1 2 3 4 5 6, 7 8 9 10 11 12 ? I hope this is understandable

Thanks for the kind words :-) We try hard to put out helpful info for west coast swing dancers of all levels. Over the last 5 years we've made the shift to the "leader/follower" terminology as that seems to be the best call for everyone. Most of the time I get it right. (except for the occasional time I slip and say "she" because I'm dancing with and looking at Megan and she is a girl. ;-) Unfortunately some of the earlier videos, like this one, still remain with the traditional language. In some cases we purposely choose to title videos as "ladies styling" because the majority of followers are ladies and that's the term they are searching for. In other cases we chose a 50% - 50% split between the terms "mens styling" and "leaders styling" because our research tells us that people are searching for both equally and we want to help people find what they're looking for. Hi Maia, Thanks for your message. We have largely made that change in our videos but with 100's of videos online many of them still have boy/girl language. Please note we do make some choices on purpose by using language that allows the most dancers to find relevant videos. For example: at this time we still use "ladies styling" for our videos dedicated to the followers simply because that is the most common language that followers are using to look for videos and our job is to get the most relevant videos to WCS dancers around the world.
