I remember watching this game as an 11 year old child and it still hurts today, although we got our revenge 2 years later. Of course I knew back then and I definitely know now that the Dutch are not only amazing footballers (considering the small size of the country) but in general pretty cool people. There's a lot I like about the netherlands and far more we've got in common then what separates us. Yet that rivalry in football remains and it's the spice that makes the game so wonderful. :-)

After wining Euro 1988, the Dutch replaced coach, Rinus Mitchel with Libergates who didn't get along with the plsyers and the team played very badly and just disintegrated! Had Rinus Mitchel continued as coach, Holland would have been World Champions in 1990! Once again the Dutch shot themselves in their foot!

@Sun Wu-Entai 90 It's not a 'fake' penalty, deliberately or not Rijkaard did impede Klinsmann. And it certainly looks as though the player deliberately aims the ball at the referee, he doesn't kick it hard away to the stands, he turns his body to face the ref and kicks it towards him. Disrespectful, and not at all how a player is supposed to behave, regardless of if he thinks the correct decision has been made.

Klinsmann was clearly hit. He accepted the invitation very willingly though. So you could blame him for putting up too much drama. But Kohler played the ball as far as I'm concerned and he tackled from the side. Not really a penalty.

Everybody is insane: Klinsmann kicks the ball one way and dives the other way..... van Basten is molested to the ground but keeps on (trying to) play the ball. It is so easy: I keep a close watch on this match of mine, my eyes are wide open all the time!

It looked like the German got the ball so that penalty would be overturned by Var today. Klinsmann turned into the defender to dive and that would be overturned as well.

@@imateapot51 I'm not sure if the German defender touched it, but if he does his toe only touches it, and it is hard to say whether it is before he takes the legs of Van Basten. Not to mention VAR didn't stop lots of bizarre decisions at the last world cup! As for Klinsmann, no, the defender made contact with him, and penalties are often given for such contact, no matter the histrionics of the striker, though it varies greatly still between referees. I agree with Buder. By the way, Kliinsmann did NOT turn INTO the defender; Rijkaard's leg did slightly block him, the only dishonest thing he did was his fake reaction to suggest heavier contact. That was less common back then, but is now par for the course and sometimes PRAISED by pundits.
