Anyone doing good acts but making excuses for it after or saying it was just for a reward or for some other reason tends to fit the bill. Han Solo was the most famous modern day one in Star Wars. I see some confused by the whole "Jackson turned his camera on/off" bit, so let me try to explain it. They kind of explain it earlier in the episode when Doug and Jackson had their man to man chat. Not sure how it works but the body cameras are ALWAYS recording, however if they are not "on" then I believe the footage is pretty quickly deleted, not viewable, and unrecoverable. What they say in the episode is as soon as the camera is switched "on", all footage from 2 minutes previous to the second its turned on is now saved and viewable. So it was off, but the second Jackson hits the on button, his last 2 minutes are now able to be reviewed and saved, including him seeing Jackson getting tuned up, and not interfering. I believe this is done for a few reasons. First is technological limits, as in just having them always recording isn't feasible based on storage capacity and battery life, let alone privacy concerns. Second is to ensure cops are on their best behaviour, while its not "on" it could be at any moment, and catch stuff you did when you knew it was off, so act accordingly. Third is procedural, some times it might be off and cops suddenly witness something without time to turn it on, if they can do that right after seeing something and know its captured still, it becomes crucial evidence.
@MidnightHeir4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I legit didn't get this.
@jarowan4 жыл бұрын
By definition, if the camera only starts recording when you switch it on, it's going to miss whatever it was that caused you to turn it on. You heard/saw/got a call about something and thought 'oh, i'm going to need to record this.' This way, if you get shot at or threatened or someone shouts something ugly to you, once you click the cam, it has already recorded that thing. This way, it's always available if something happens, but if nothing happens, it never goes anywhere and gets erased.
@amf51714 жыл бұрын
IRL, the cameras only get all video (no audio) captured 30 seconds prior to turning it on, and the switch he activated is the actual power switch, not the “record” button, but pretty much yeah that’s how it works.

The Character he's playing is scary, yes. He's also a dick, who thinks People of Color have no respect for authority, even though they do. Jackson's Dad runs the I.A for crying out loud, how is *that* no respect?
@ShredPenguins3 жыл бұрын
@@ryonhatcher4561 I agree he is awful and racist. But, and I think it's an important thing the show mentioned, it's important to remember HOW he became that way. It's not enough to identify the bad officers and remove them, but also to understand HOW they became to be the way they are. I guarantee most bad cops weren't always that way, they are the culmination of their experiences, even if they arrive at the wrong conclusion. In this case, being a patrol officer in one of the most violent gang neighborhoods in LA in the 90s. He clearly needed a measure of therapy after everything he experienced. As a white guy that grew up 3 blocks from Cabrini Green in Chicago in the 80's and 90's, I can tell you it could have been very easy to become a racist, intolerant asshole if I hadn't been surrounded by loving, accepting people.
@ryonhatcher45613 жыл бұрын
@@ShredPenguins Maybe, but that doesn't justify what he did to the People he attacked in the past three Episodes. He attacked a Kid who was just minding his own business, listening to Music. He arrested a Woman who was handing Guns over to the Police from her Ex-Husband, granted I can see how that's illegal, but still. In this Episode, he was about to beat up a Lawyer, who didn't even do anything illegal. The Lawyer was just showing his friends the Engine in his Car. I can understand what you’re talking about and yes, some People are bad, because of bad experiences. But, there are times, where people can be bad, simply because it'seither all they knew or just because they want to. Not saying that Stanton wanted ro be bad, he just has the bad habit of stereotyping People and judge Books by their Covers. Let’s hope Stanton's Kids don't inherit their Father’s sense of judgement.

The fact it automatically records two minutes prior to being turned on is a good feature, it meant that he was able to catch him out. But the fact officers can turn cameras off or on by themselves seems like something that they should be prevented from being able to do
@flatfeetlefthanded4 жыл бұрын
There are times when cops will need to turn it off very quickly for privacy’s sake. Such as when they use the restroom and if a confidential informant ( in certain circumstances) pops up with information. I’m not a cop, but I do understand that sometimes, privacy is needed to preserve safety.
@vexxama4 жыл бұрын
@@flatfeetlefthanded fair, but what if there was a button for that purpose that marked the beginning and end of a period where privacy was required, but could still be reviewed with the proper authority for a specific purpose? It could still be kept off the initial recording, but would be harder to abuse
@flatfeetlefthanded4 жыл бұрын
@@vexxama I'm all for higher levels of integrity, including the advancement of technology. But real life application needs a bit of practicality. Last year, the "Blue leaks" happened, exposing over 700,000 police personal data. While that's horrible, imagine another hack that finds more- tactics, undercover identities, locations of sensitive stuff, etc. The truth is, it's a much more complex issue of being more transparent with the public, and keeping information safe. And i have to be honest, I love your ideas, but I can also see how they can lead to other problems. I'm not saying they're bigger problems, just more. I'm also not here to criticize, but to play devil's advocate.

What a great piece of writing and TV, a fantastic way to use the popularity of the show to send a message and do it so well. Not all cops are the same, not all black people are the same, not all white people are the same there is inequality surrounding us and people need to stand up to it in the right manner and we need to stand shoulder to shoulder with them when they do no matter our race.

This show is very "Hollywood" (no pun intended) and it can be dramatically cheesy at times, but it does an excellent job of illustrating the complexity of being a cop, as well as a suspect, in America.
