Do you know it's the most depressed state in the nation. It's also the hardest to get a job. One of the fattest. The most unhealthy. There is a reason and this place sucks ass I've lived here most of my life and I wish I could leave

Luke Winter leave anytime. In my 60s with all of it being in WV. Traveled all over US and into Canada. Never found anything better. Never had to look for longer than a day to get a job. Of course you have to have some work ethic and not be a lazy assed entitled person to do that. That being said as I said before leave, some other states loss will be our gain.

I first visited West Virginia in 2008 when I was in Pittsburgh and I took a drive to the New River Bridge. I live in British Columbia and West Virginia is the only place in the east that compares in beauty to BC and Washington State. I have been back several times since as my daughter went to grad school in WV where she met and eventually married a fantastic southern gentleman. They now live in the northern part of the state. When I have taken walks around the community and met local people I have never met any who were unfriendly. While WV may not have as much in the way of material wealth as many other places, the people overall make WV a rich place to live. I consider WV to almost be my second home now.

Sweet, kind and gentle people. Genuinely caring. If your car breaks down while traveling through the green rolling hills, every person who notices will most likely pull over to see if you need help. And then give it. The typical, negative stereotyping/ridiculing of West Virginians (especially by those who have never even been there to visit) is cruel and exudes ignorance. 💚PLEASE BE COMPASSIONATE!💚

I'm glad to see this reply!! People seem to always respond to questions about stereotypes by saying "Hey, we're not all poor, look at me, I don't have a strong accent and look how bleached my teeth are!!" I wish more people would respond saying, "What's wrong with being poor, if you are hard-working and friendly?" :) My family is from the hills, albeit not WV, and have strong accents, and they're intelligent and hard-working people as well. Sorry for ranting on this old comment-- Best wishes to you and thanks for your positive comment :D

I was born in Huntington in 1954, and stayed there until 1984. Growing up, I heard some of the stereotypes, and learned of some other ones after I left. One of the ones I heard when I was a kid, was the one about everyone having wringer washers on their front porches. Then, when I lived in Winston-Salem, NC, some people I met, thought there was a lot of incest. Some people I met in NC, also thought that West Virginia is part of Virginia. When I was in California, I was working in this Kmart. I was going on my break one day, and this guy comes walking up to me, and asked him where the bathroom was. I told him, and he made fun of my accent by saying "alrite, y'all" BTW, I do know how to spell all right. I was just trying to spell it the way he made it sound.
@susanhopemason2 жыл бұрын
Also, I want to add, that since I left Huntington, I lived in several different states. Currently, I am living a little over 15 miles away from Huntington...in Ashland, KY. If I had a car, I would probably go check it out to see how much has changed, but it is too far to go without a car.

@christophersanders97657 жыл бұрын
If you want to see real America, go to a West Virginia University (American) football game. You'll see how it is here, what the people are like, and you''ll see some other crazy stuff. Some of the good smaller towns in West Virginia, is Hurricane, Milton, Nitro, and Winfield. If you go in the winter, there is place to Ski, called Winterplace, which was pretty fun to me. I personally like to stay in the counties of Putnam, Cabell, and Kanawha.

Morgantown is much different from when most of the students are gone; I’d suggest going to one of the summer festivals to see the local culture or the October hot air balloon festival. Cooper’s Rock is also nearby and is absolutely worth at minimum a quick stop and walk to the overlook. GotoWV has a website with lists of attractions. I’ve been to and recommend: Seneca Caverns, Berkeley Springs, and one of the many train rides (always wanted to ride the 1950s dinner train in Elkins and never have). Sadly I’ve never taken the initiative to visit many of my state’s local attractions, but your post kind inspires me too.

+candy5742 West Virginia isn't all backwoods and dirt roads like the media portrays us. We have malls and airports in almost every county and we have 55 counties. Don't believe what some people portray. I was born and raised in good ole West Virginia and I love it here :)

I love WV. I hate the negative stereotypes because they're ridiculous. I'm 45 years old and still have beautiful teeth, went to college forever, don't drink, only have one child...we don't live in a trailer... Geez how ridiculous.

I am from MARTINSBURG West Virginia and we are about 2 hours away from Washington DC and 45 minutes from BALTIMORE Maryland so we are pretty much a city ourselves but I grew up doing drugs and ended up doing close to 15 years in prison myself between Maryland and West Virginia and I finally got away from there before I ended up doing the rest of my life in prison or getting killed etc because its definitely nothing but drugs and prostitution anymore. And I don't want my son to go through the same shit that I did and it is a corrupt town that is for sure. The cops will stop the prostitutes at night and take their money if they haven't bought dope or something yet and some of them will even make them perform sexual favors too just so they don't go to jail.

Life is like a layer cake or a cake. Everyone is on their own frequency. It all depends on what you want. people like water finds its own level. "Being determines consciousness." Lenin )) the environment around you determines your consciousness, how and what you think. Society, family income, opportunities,,, to study, earn, health,,, You got it right. We have to go from bad places. I'm from Russia. This is a tough country. Life is not worth much. So there are a lot of smart people here-fools die. Darwin. People come to you from Russia. These people will tell you a lot that is not in the Internet and TV. There was a heroin epidemic in Russia in 1990-2010. Prostitution, crime. Just like you.

west virginia is like many other states... you just have to take the good with the bad. there are so many kind people though! when i travel to other states, it can be surprising how unfriendly and antisocial people can be. nevertheless, i love west virginia.

I was born in Fairmont West Virginia. I hate going barefoot. I have teeth and I have an education I haven’t been back there since my brother passed away but I love to go back to the hills. It’s beautiful there.
