Celebrations honouring ten years of Western Sydney Diabetes (WSD) took place recently, with more than 200 western Sydney doctors, nurses, community leaders, academics and politicians gathering at Workers Blacktown to acknowledge the past, and plan the next step in Western Sydney Diabetes’ campaign to ‘Beat Diabetes Together’.
Western Sydney Diabetes is a collaborative initiative led by Western Sydney Local Health District and Western Sydney Primary Health Network, in partnership with Diabetes Australia and the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.
It was established in 2014 in response to the growing threat of diabetes to our community’s health and wellbeing.
Pioneered by Professor Stephen Leeder, Professor Stephen Colagiuri and Walter Kmet - today it’s led by Professor Glen Maberly.
“The Western Sydney Diabetes ten-year celebration has been a defining event in our journey, showcasing our achievements and setting a strong foundation for future success,” said Glen.
As part of the milestone event, ABC’s Dr Norman Swan and Blacktown community leader, Dr Jim Taggart facilitated five panels to build on the achievements of type 2 diabetes awareness, prevention, detection and management in western Sydney.
These panels were:
The Pioneers of Western Sydney Diabetes
Primary Prevention Champions
General Practitioner Champions
Government Perspectives
The Future of Western Sydney Diabetes
