Thanks for the videos on this 5303. I have a 5303 and loader set up just like that, with over 1800 hours on it. Handiest little tractor I've used. Put lots less hours on the 8100 with the little tractor around. Always wondered about the clutch on mine. Hasn't given me any trouble, but figure it will eventually, and wondered what it was going to take to replace it.

I'm surprised the John Deere dealer sold you the parts and let you work on it yourself. They're getting down right difficult to deal with where we live. No books, not even a peek at theirs, and no product support at all. I had to find a pdf on the interwebz, pay the man in Columbia south America, then pay to have 700+ pages printed. What a greedy company John Deere is. Oh, they had one to sell me alright, for almost a thousand dollars!

I usually take an all and punch a hole in the seal where you are drilling holes, then take my slide hammer and work them out. I have always had good luck doing it this way.

Always appreciate how you take your time aligning and pulling the engine & trans together. Especially that you do it by hand so you can feel the pressure to know if something is misaligned. Too many yahoos just get it close and impact it home!

A small dent puller works great for removing seals . Drill your small holes and place sheet metal screw in puller screw into seal and work your way around seal . Have used it on engines to wheel seals. I am a retired heavy equip field tec .like you I worked alone unless I had 20 ton mast to remove then I did need some help. I am now 80 and I miss it . You sure make a full contact, physical and mental, effort when you get involved with a project. Flashlight or bolt between your teeth, hip or knee applying force to hold a part in place, and then asking "well, that ain't gonna work so what can I do different to make it happen?" All the while explaining to us what is the reason for doing this a certain way intertwined with an anecdote out of a past project 12 years ago. No damn wonder why I'm wore out at the end of each video.

hello Warren just something you might be interested in, something i used to use with care ofcourse, get a 10 inch metal file with no handle and grind the flat side of the pointed handle end until you have an hooked shape about 1/16th from the end, useful for slipping inbetween the shaft and seal and jerk small seals out.

Yep when I was a kid me and my dad and his friend we did a couple of those rear ends and 3rd members. I’m around your age, and things were so different in the old days like you said guys were prepared logging is rough on equipment even when you take care of it. I haven’t touched any heavy work in 30 years, I’m a day route trucker in NY hauling freight I’ve learned some new tricks from the old boys out here many years back and I’ll tell you these people today they know nothing they can’t even pinch off an air line and back a brake off when a maxi goes, they’re lucky if they can figure out where the airs pissing out of.

I've managed to get a rear crank seal out before by letting the self tapping screw bottom out on the side of the main bearing cap and then keep on tightening the screw and it acts like a press and winds the seal out on the screw, being very careful about where the screw is bottomed out though

My opinion as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic is it’s a great way to learn some basics and what the industry is like for the dealer side. Remember, these professionals that you will be dealing with are willing to share their knowledge with you, respect that and they will be willing to help you more. Even at this age do not burn bridges, one of those mechanics may be interviewing you for a job in years to come.

Warren, give us a verbal explanation of how that double-clutch works, as I understand one clutchplate drives the gearbox, the other the PTO, I cannot get my head around how the thrust bearing works, to press the two different clutches.

The drive clutch is always engaged unless you push the clutch pedal which pulls a cable connected to the lever on the side of the bell housing that has a through shaft with a fork that pushes on the drive thrust bearing. The PTO clutch disk is always free, just kinda flopping around in there until you engage your PTO lever which is manual linkage to another lever and through shaft fork deal that pushes the PTO thrust bearing. Inside the clutch pack is a spring plate which always has pressure to leave the PTO clutch in release mode. That same spring plate is the tension you will feel when engaging the PTO lever. Hope that makes sense... Really a poor design. I've replaced many! I prefer the 2 stage clutch pedal- half way is drive release, all the way is PTO clutch.

There are two thrust bearings and forks and input shafts as well. We've only seen the one solid PTO shaft. I googled the tractor number with transmission or clutch as the second word and right away a color diagram popped up. Still a daunting task as to understanding it, but I'm willing to give that a pass at this point - it seems to work anyway. :-)

here is an issue you have never had before.. i have a friend with a Countach.. it broke down and lost the clutch master cylinder so he could not release the clutch.. for years.. when it has broken down.. AAA has towed it no issue.. yesterday they called back.. all the contract companies refused to carry it as the value of the car exceeded the amount of damage insurance they carry..

Isn't there some adjustment on the clutch forks before you re-assemble everything? I wouldn't think that the disc's would move so easily.

He was spinning the one PTO disk to ensure it was not captured somewhere it shouldn't be. Which tells me automatically that the PTO clutch is engaged by means of reverse logic - you press that throw out bearing forward to apply pressure to the disk and engage the PTO clutch disc to the flywheel for power transfer. From the factory, the adjustments would be correct since they can't guarantee this fact by any other means possible. An instruction sheet to do the same could be construed to mean you need to do this when you don't and/or the other way around. As Warren said, relax. It's been done properly.

I have a question about a JD 8440. Tractor hesitating when you release the clutch then it moves out fine but you can hear a faint whine. Seems to plow ok but is something losing hydraulic pressure in the clutch? Quad-shift transmission is not giving me any problems.....

Actorzone..... John Deere has been fitting a four bolt crank/fly wheel in those Engines ever since the late 1960's it's a French engine, chinese transmission & assembled i forget now but some where in asia!

@@georgeminty5014 thanks, i rebuilt a JD 4045 powertech common rail engine and realized its an old engine dressed up as mutton, they still go alright, with all the emission regulations these old recycled engines reached their limit several years ago, still never seen any engine with a 4 bolt flywheel b4.

Holy Cow! Warren your H.R., department needs to get you to a refresher course on work place etiquette. Calling that log truck driver "old guy". That is so offensive, and demeaning for a work place, harassment, borderline elder abuse. How about seasoned, & "wisend" gentleman. (not sure if "wisend" is even a word). Awe but I jest, ha, ha, ha... My dad (long since gone) drove one of those logs trucks for almost 40yrs, those gentleman have all kinds of little tricks up their sleeves, save all their old worn out gloves, so that on a cold morning, soak them with diesel, light them, and thaw out frozen brakes. You sir have little tricks up your sleeve as well, such as telling us if we ever have a rear-end go out like this one, to change out those bearings "down stream". That there is pretty dam good advice, that you probably won't see written in them schooling manuals... And that kind info., is no doubt what draws and keeps viewers to your channel. Love your videos.
