Awesome.. I just got this kit lastnight, never have tried to fly fish and the only piece of knowledge is from one of my favorite movies, "A river runs threw it". Lmao. Iv never even held a fly rod but I was stoked to see how well I could use it down at the river after I bought it. No fish yet but I only had about 40 minutes before it got darker so had to wrap it up. I been watching some videos and doing some research to get it down. So excited to see where this goes. I already like fly fishing over spin or bait cast. Good job on the video.

You should try roll casting for those short casts. It also works if.there is a bunch of trees behind you. You basically leave the line on the water using the water to build of tension. Then you flip/roll cast the line forward and never have to get the line behind you. It works great for those really short casts.

@touchpuppy3 жыл бұрын
Try keeping your rod tip in the water as you retrieve. You'll get better tension for hook sets, and more action in your back cast (the more line along the water the more surface tension).

Hey I was just looking into getting this kit as well and I’m wondering if it’s worth it and if it holds up well on bigger fish
@stevengable68872 жыл бұрын
I bought the kit for shits and giggles myself as well. I thought if anything I could keep it in my car all the time and if it got stolen I wouldn't care. But to be honest with you it has become my favorite fly rod for bass, and the reel is trash. I ended up replacing the reel with a maxcatch eco large arbor reel. But the fly line is still my car kit line, even though I prefer much better fly lines. I decided since I can cast it might as well keep it.

Same reel as the Cedar Canyon Premiere rod. Trade quit out of the box so removed it and use it without brakes. Rod is fine

Westinghouse try a roll cast after you cast out roll to what side you want the line to go either left or right the flip or roll as I call it moves the line in the direction you want to move it helps instead of hanging up in a tree or bridge just a suggestion

I have only ever broken 2 rods in my life. One was closing a rear hatch on the tip of a St. Criox triumph which was fixed and I still use. Second was whipping a big spinnerbait to hard and snapping a Rapala rod in half but it may have been defective because my Dad had a similar rod of the same series bought at the same time that was in fact defective

Hey man love that you got into fly fishing. A little tip when casting if you give a little tug on the main line right before you cast either forward or backwards you give it a little momentum. Make sure you do it right as it straightens and it will help you get it further. Let the rod load up and use that to your benefit

Hey I got that rod as my first fly rod I landed northern pike on.. I still have it several years later and still lands me pike. I have upgraded the reel and line of course. 🔥🔥🔥🔥 as always. Ps. The butt section of a fly leader is usually 20lbs.
@stevengable68872 жыл бұрын
I find the butt section to be more of like 25 lb... The 20 lb will work. This kit isn't bad, but the reel is poor quality plastic, loud and wears out. I recommend maximum catch eco for replacement reel, but it must have been fun landing that Pike. Happy fishing
@jirredvang9013 жыл бұрын
Lol this is the same combo I bought when I started 3 years ago. Right away I noticed the drag didn't work too however I never fly fished before and knew nothing so thought nothing of it. Eventually the whole reel gave out it still works but the clicking stopped and there is no resistance at all. The rod in my opinion for 40 dollars is good enough for some small creek trout and bluegill or even crappie this rod is good. However don't recommend unless you're really extremely on a small budget and just want to experience fly fishing

YOu have probably heard this before, but you could have gone to Wal-Mart and purchased Ozark Trail leader spools for a couple of dollars and tied on some 6 lb with a surgeon's knot or a blood knot. Although the blood is a little more challenging to tie, buy a large spool of the cheap line and practice it over and over and become affluent. The lighter tippet like the one that came with your rod is for lighter species and has the ability to tie smaller bugs with smaller eyelets. I KNOW you are trying to convince people that the rod you purchased can handle various species of fish, but that simply is not the case. Fly fishing, unfortunately, is an ongoing investment that wiser people see as impractical to land a few pesky trout. One of the most bitter things I have learned about fly fishing is that it involves TRAVEL. Sure, you can go to your local lake or stream and catch a few; but some want that wonderland of a trip to British Columbia or Alaska. Sadly, this is why a lot of travel agencies like Bob Marriotts in So. Cal sells fly fishing gear. Remember this- fly fishing is like golf, and it can become quite specialized. I have 10 fly rods, rigged for different environments, challenges, and species. On the other hand, you have mastered the art of cheap fly fishing gear. You have handled the disadvantages of the broomstick better than Lefty Kreh ver could have. YOU, in my opinion, are the Master of the Universe. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJ-lk4ppnJqsa7M I guess the Tiger character could be your buddy from the first "Martin Rod" video! Tight lines!!

Since it was a 7 and 1/2 foot leader I tied on a couple feet of 25 lb test mono on as a butt section and then I did a blood knot to attach the leader as of kind of to make a leader extension so as I clip off leaders and tie on new leaders I'm not shortening my fly line but rather shortening the 25 lb test but section instead until I run out of that. The line that comes with this kit is level. A very cheap poor choice for beginning fly fisherman. They should have included a at least a cheap weight forward floating six weight. It is easier for beginners to cast and they should have picked a color like white or yellow or orange so that people could see their line for nymphing or casting practice. The teal isn't hard to see but they could have made a better color choice. The real is plastic with plastic gears and plastic parts it does eventually wear and stops clicking in click paul dragging properly. The real isn't the best certainly not a pflueger medalist. Even an inexpensive Maxcatch Eco real would be a fine replacement. It is a fine disc drag reel available on Amazon. However the rod is fair for a beginner. I bought this combo out of sheer curiosity, and I wanted something that I could keep in my car at all times and if it got stolen I wouldn't be upset. I enjoy the rod, however it seems to be the only piece in this kit that seems to be worth the money. And I would say it's not good enough to be worth a total of 40 bucks, but if you're looking for all the other pieces to keep as a car rod it fits my bill. You do not want to keep fly line in a hot car, unless it's a cheap level line that came with your kit and you don't care about it. Extreme Hot temperatures will ruin your fly line as well as sunlight. Don't keep "good pricey"fly line in your car all the time. The extreme temperatures will cause it to have coil memory to your real and it will cast like crap. However, to be expected from this cheap line that comes with it. If you're grabbing this kit just to get by for a day or a short camping trip you're going to be fine. If you're grabbing this kit expecting it to last a lifetime you're going to be disappointed. However I would say the rod would last you a long time but everything else in this kit is a get-by-grab. I bought this myself with the expectations of this in mind I got exactly what I expected. Is it great for beginners? I would say a beginner could do a little bit better. If you're buying this for someone under the age of 12 to get them into fly fishing this is the way to go. Especially if they are expected to break things. If you are older adult and wanting to try fly fishing and can afford something better, you probably should buy something a little more spendy as you will get a better quality kit. This video is an excellent review I even watched it before I bought this kit. I wanted to buy one of these kits to keep in my car but the cork handle was really what appealed to me. All the other kits this cheap come with foam handle and an ugly rod and this kit was a no-brainer for a car-steal-me rod. I might even loan it to friends that don't have fly rods if they want to give it a shot when they go fishing with me. I have nice rods that I use primarily. Nicer reels and nicer lines also.

Sorry but I am gonna be a putz for the 1st time on your channel. Quit buying the crap and get a good outfit. You'll get more out of quality in the fly fishing world. Especially when you deal with the rod and line, the reel is something that holds the line. Granted it's nice to have a decent drag and some bling-bling. I think if you use a fly rod in a bass tournament it can only be 8'6" long. Good Luck.
