I am so glad they are OK. I have 46 years in Emergency Services, 42 years as a Paramedic. Luckily, I have never been in an ambulance crash. My late wife Penny (she was 14 years older than me) had over 50 years in Emergency Services before she passed away. She worked as a Ambulance Attendant (late 60s), EMT (early 70s) and eventually a Paramedic (early 80s to 2020). She survived a broadside crash (it ended up on its side too) while treating a patient in the back. She was not so lucky and ended up severely injured. But she was a tough person and recovered. I can tell you they don't seem to make women like her anymore. I love and miss you, my wonderful wife. But life goes on.

As bad as it sounds that a stolen vehicle crashed into an ambulance, it's even worse because it required an additional seven to handle it--six for the M11 accident, plus one to cover the call M11 was originally responding to. West Metro operates 15 ambulances that provide service for over 100 square miles in the Denver metro area, so you don't need to be a math guru to recognize the strain this one incident put on the entire system. A huge pat on West Metro's back for shuffling resources to maintain coverage.
@coover652 жыл бұрын
Any idea how many people Metro West FD serve? Are 15 ambulances for such a population normal in the US? I'm in Queensland Australia where we'd have on average of 16-25 paramedic crews in a city of 300,000. Because we're a state-run ambulance, it's easy to bring crews in from the two adjoining cities.
@WestMetroFire2 жыл бұрын
Hi- we're actually a fire district with our own Board of Directors and revenue derived from property taxes. We serve nearly 300,000 residents. We added a medic in 2022 and one on January 1, 2023- so we now have 14. We have an automatic aid agreement with one of our bordering districts and mutual aid agreements with the others. Every apparatus has at least one paramedic on board- including our engines, towers and trucks. We send the closest available unit to each call. If the engine arrives first, they are able to begin treatment ahead of the medic arrival.
@franklewis69432 жыл бұрын
@@WestMetroFire Sorry. My count included M19 (at Station 10) and M8. I haven't lived in the district since 2020, however, so my numbers are clearly off. My original point remains complimentary: The Medic 11 incident tied up over half of West Metro's frontline ambulances, yet the agency still managed to maintain ALS medical services for the entire district. That fact is one district personnel should be proud of and should instill confidence in the people they serve that they can trust West Metro to always have their back. As for aid agreements, I was under the impression that they were automatic for Pleasant View (dual-response to Colorado Mills), Fairmount, Arvada and South Metro; especially the last, what with WM15 way down south and SM19 & 40 being the next-closest stations.
@WestMetroFire2 жыл бұрын
@@franklewis6943 Medic 19 was used as a special events (Red Rocks) ambulance and not in the daily rotation. Yes- we do have auto response with Pleasant View (for the Colorado Mills area) and South Metro. Not for Arvada or Fairmount. Those are mutual aid.

They are right, when you're vehicle is flipping everything does go into slow motion. Around Thanksgiving last year we were in an accident where the impact caused our vehicle to flip 3 times, and then roll 7 times before we came to a stop. I remember alot of what happened, because like an idiot I didn't have my seatbelt on, and I was pushing on the dash, roof, dash, roof to stay in my seat while trying to talk to my 2 year old son in the back. Everybody was okay, my son wasn't phased at all but was super excited to see the firetrucks, ambulance, cops, and the big wrecker tow truck. That was his favorite. Yeah I always wear my seatbelt now.

Glad the mass of the rig compared to the Jeep was in the Crew's favor, and both belted in. That style of ambulance does tend to have a higher center of gravity, somewhat offset by the rear axle dual wheels. Very fortunate the miscreant did not strike a small car!

Can we stop calling these incidents accidents please? This was no accident; this was a collision where one party was 100% at fault.
@coover652 жыл бұрын
Interesting you say that. Here in Australia, we have to call them RTCs (Road Traffic Collisions). Calling them an "accident" means no person was at fault, which could go pear shaped if our case sheet is used in court.
@bloodlos2 жыл бұрын
Devil’s advocate. Definition of accident is: “an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury.” Unintentional does not mean with out blame. Something to debate.

NOT an accident. Although not the firefighter's fault, this was preventable, as are most injury events. We need to stop thinking about injury as freak events or acts of God and start focusing on how to prevent them.

Not sure if the driver of the ambulance could have done anything. They were proceeding through the intersection when hit. It looks like the Jeep was going over 30mph, at night. That leave very little room for reaction in a vehicle that can't just speed up a little to avoid anything.

There you can see how fast this stuff can happen. Gladly there's only damage to the equipment that can be replaced. The other car and theri people got hit way harder. I feel sorry for the Medic 11 crew and for the people who got their car stolen and crashed. At least the crew is on duty again in a replacement unit. In Leipzig, Germany a few years ago an ambulance got hit on the back (passenger side) axle and spun around and rolled to the side. There it's been a code 3 emergency ride, cars had been stopped on 3 of the 4 lanes, the 4th lane had been clear... Then the ambulance crew turned left on the intersection when all of a sudden a car came on the 4th lane and the driver didn't realize the ambulance (lights and sirens going) and hit it with around 40-45 km/h. Here it was the case that the driver got a call in before leaving the ambulance too. The central fire station had been 2 minutes aw0ay and another abmulance had been crossing the intersection but stopped to help their colleagues (same private rescue organisation) - they also had a patient in the back who's the reason for the code 3 run.

Why was the windshield cut if both medics self extracted from the ambulance before fire got there ?? The windshield looks like it was cut to remove someone from the inside and medical supplies should of not been flying around the inside of the ambulance unless it was a messy rig or cabinet were left open which is a no no .
