Weston-super-Mare Part 2 - Sigma Foveon. Sigma DP1 Merrill and Sigma DP3 Merrill. How did that go?

A brief stay in Weston with a couple of Sigma Merrill cameras and the Sigma FT-1201 extender for the DP3M. Brilliant and frustrating cameras, as always. I hope the evidence is in the video!

I’ve recently gotten into photography, and the first camera I bought after falling in love with the pictures I’ve seen from it was a DP3 Merrill. It’s not an easy first camera, and sometimes I worry I’ve bitten a bit more off than I can chew! Until I get a look at the photos I’ve taken and a few of them are worth the whole hassle of shooting on such a finicky camera. Also the focal length of the DP3 makes it tricky to frame, but you can get lovely blurry backgrounds. Having a narrow field of view also creates a completely different look than what I’m used to with my phone camera, another reason why I didn’t go for the DP1. The DP2 is a bit of a middle ground, but it’s also the most expensive to buy used (probably for that reason)

I really enjoy my Sigma Dp1s. So much so the SD15 followed and then the SD Quattro and some art lenses . Sadly (for me ) the DP1 failed and could not be repaired , the Quattro was discontinued and the SD mount also shrank and may well be discontinued. Like other manufacturers Sigma changed the tech and tried to drive us toward the FP series and L mount. The future of Foveon seems uncertain. I think the APSC sensor was just fine, I don’t see any significant benefits in a FF foveon. If it was easy to do and practicable we would have it. It’s just my take but foveon is dead at the moment and that makes me sad

If Sigma could make a reliable version of the DP1 I'd buy it now! I had two that both failed eventually.... The SA mount lenses are still around if you're patient in searching and waiting (and still available new, at the moment). I agree with you about the APSC sensor - I'm not really sure who needs more. Ever considered a SD1Merrill?

I confess I thought about it but two things put me off. One is the fact that it's a DSLR and I didn't love the SD15 enough to commit further in that direction. Second was I don't think the price is justified. The sd Quattro has now surely scratched the Foveon itch! Thanks for watching and asking!
