I've had a click in my left jaw for nearly a month now, and I've been trying the other exercises. I just received my corks and have started trying this out. I notice I can usually get it into my mouth without it clicking, but as soon as I start moving it clicks, and then again once I take the cork out. Is that normal? Should I be trying to see how much motion I can get without it clicking? Or should I just keep doing this in spite of the click and eventually I'll be able to do more without it clicking?

Both. First, move the jaw slightly if you can without it clicking. Then expand range of motion, gently past the clicking.

Thank you for the videos. You mentioned in this video jaw tension can cause it. I was grinding/clenching my teeth for the past 10 months and stopped now.. I noticed when I take muscle relaxers the popping will go away or decrease significantly. In your opinion is that a good sign that this is likely a muscular tension issue and I should continue to try and relax them ? Thanks!
@BuffaloTMJ4 жыл бұрын
If you take muscle relaxant medication, and the pain decreases, then it tells you muscle tension is a big part of your issue. It's best NOT to take muscle relaxants if you don't need to. It's much better, much healthier, and much more beneficial long-term to LEARN to relax your muscles through meditation and relaxation techniques.

@BuffaloTMJ5 жыл бұрын
You should get it looked at now. Might be because of the injury you described, but there could be other reasons your jaw is clicking. You're still growing, so seek out an orthodontist, preferably one who pays close attention to the airway and breathing. They should be familiar with "orthotropics" and "airway-focused denitstry"
@BuffaloTMJ5 жыл бұрын
Also, remember that clicking is OK if it doesn't hurt, doesn't interfere with your daily activities such as chewing and talking, doesn't get stuck or locked, and doesn't seem to get worse over time.
@BuffaloTMJ5 жыл бұрын
Because you still have some growth left, you can work functionally with your jaw, meaning in particular paying attention to how you chew. Try chewing mindfully for few days, and see what you notice. This means go slow, and ONLY pay attention to the act of chewing.

The body makes lots of noises, especially as we get older. Watch this video to find out more about different clicking sounds.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4TQen9thMuiicU If you can function normally, you have no pain, and everything LOOKS normal (no swelling, deformity, or increasing asymmetry) then I wouldn't worry about the noises. In other words, if your jaw clicks, but you can chew, speak, and breathe normally, you have no pain, and your jaw looks ok to you, then don't worry about it. Try to notice if you're doing anything habitually, like clenching your teeth, or chewing on things like fingernails or pencils. Avoid excessive use of your jaw. And remember that your back teeth should be a little bit apart most of the time, with your tongue up on the roof of your mouth.

At first I had noticed jaw clicking problem on me so I visited doctor and he suggested to use occlusion splint and to have MRI test. From that test it was observed that “Degenerative changes in right TMJ with intersubstance degeneration of right articular disc”. So doctor suggested me PRP therapy on my right side and I had followed the same. It’s been more than 2 weeks clicking problem has slightly reduced in right side however I m feeling more clicking and discomfort on left side. I had visited the doctor the day before yesterday and they told me that they still need to observe progress so they said me to revisit after two weeks. But I m so confused and afraid about my problem and had doubt over that MRI report because I had to visit the hospital 3 times to get that report as they said the report was gone for correction. Can my doubt be a reality ? Can tmj clicking problem be cured ? Actually I had problem of teeth cavities also, is this also a reason of tmj ?
@BuffaloTMJ Жыл бұрын
Clicking on its own, without pain or limitation of function, is not usually a good reason for any intervention. PRP is an attempt to stimulate healing in damaged structures. However, if you're not also wearing some type of protective device to protect the joints from load, your body will make adjustments, and this is why I think sometimes the opposite side can become symptomatic. MRI's require interpretation, and everyone's interpretation is not the same. I'll make a video on what an MRI should look like.
@BuffaloTMJ Жыл бұрын
And sometimes joints click indefinitely. This doesn't need to be "cured." And cavities don't cause TMJ dysfunction.

Being able to open to full range of motion is good. Clicking usually means one or both discs aren't tightly fastened to the condyle any longer, and they move around. You'll want to avoid clenching your back teeth together, or at least notice when you are and stop. It would also be beneficial to wear an orthotic while sleeping, to prevent the joints from being loaded while you're unconscious.

The feeling in my jaw joint on the right side if I try and eat is so horrible and strange it has actually made me cry out and even cry from the stress (although it doesn't hurt) . All meal times have become a nightmare. I can really only eat soup or porridge . Anything else gives extreme discomfort . I bought 2 of your corks (they arrived today) and I was very startled to realize how much trouble I had moving my jaw .I literally couldn't even work out how to copy your movements ! I had to look in the mirror and even then I had huge trouble ,but I did get a bit of movement happening finally . What does this mean ?.... The biggest problem I have is the sensory issue of my jaw popping and grinding when I eat. It does not make a noise when I talk .The snapping sound when I eat is so loud that it makes me feel ill and I also feel as if my jaw joint is going to snap if I put any pressure at all on anything, which scares me. Over the past 3 weeks even looking at some food(like nuts, cookies, toast , carrots, apples etc) makes me feel anxious and nauseous now. I went to the doctor today and he said there is no swelling and I'd have to live with it until it went away and he said it could take a really long time which made me panic....I've been watching your videos and I really appreciate your help and your compassion is amazing.

The noises usually represent the tissues between the moving part not being smooth and pristine. Studies show that a fairly high percentage of people develop mechanical problems in their jaw joints pretty young. A study in Alberta in 2000 looked at about 200 consecutive kids coming in for braces, and found that only 50% of the boys had normal jaw joints, and only 30% of the girls had normal joints! The good news for you is that the jaw joints are VERY adaptable, and you can help this adaptation process along by doing some of these simple exercises, and also by chewing mindfully. Start small with movements, and start soft with foods. In my program with patients, we move systematically, week by week, introducing more movement and tougher foods gradually over 12 weeks. I just started learning Tai Chi, and the concepts blend beautifully with what I've tried to figure out and teach patients over the past decade or so. Very slow movements, paying attention to how the body feels, never strained, never forced.
@BuffaloTMJ5 жыл бұрын
Next time you chew something, see if you can allow everything else to fade into the background, and only pay attention to the chewing process. How does it feel to open your mouth as you get ready to put the food in? Can you feel your salivary glands activating? Are there any tension or resistances in the opening phase? Can you smell the food as you bring it closer? Notice the muscles of the tongue and lips as you insert the food, and notice how many things they do automatically, without you having to intend the movements. Now, as you begin to chew, very slowly begin to put pressure on the food with your teeth. Notice how this feels in the joints, and in the muscles. Notice which side you tend to chew with predominantly. Don't try to force it, just notice. Begin to squeeze or press the food with your teeth, and then stop before the teeth come into contact. Allow the jaw muscles to relax, and allow the jaw to drop again, as it prepares for the next chewing cycle. Repeat this process, slowly, just noticing. This will help you develop muscle memory (the muscles do indeed have intrinsic memory) that will support better function of your jaw. This will also help you discover where exactly the problems are, and learn more about how your body is working, and maybe even shed some light on why.
