Damn, I have so much to say about this video, but to start- I think you're the only reviewer I've seen who manages to so intelligently & detailedly analyze this show without seeming off-putting and pretentious. While it's nearly impossible to keep people (myself included) interested in a typical review show post-season, a concise and pointed analysis like this made me start thinking about Westworld all over again. Well done, merry merry.

Yes. Maeve was supposed to go to the mainland. If you freeze the frame at the right moment when Bernard hands her the datapad with her narrative on it, you can clearly see the chapters of the narrative and the chapter after "Escape" reads "Mainland Infiltration" My hypothesis is she was suppose to join human society and rise to a position where she could help the hosts gain legal rights. In fact I think Ford's plan doesn't end with setting the hosts loose and hoping for the best. That body he was printing in his basement is part of his plan somehow. Could he have printed out copies of the board members to replace them once the hosts take them out and dump their bodies in the handy dandy furnace they have? That would put hosts in charge of the company and in a position to usher in a new world order slowly replacing human leaders with hosts.

Your lady friend's thought about the Friar Laurence quote and how Romeo & Juliet's mutual suicide by tragic misunderstanding stopped me in my tracks. Not only is she the only other person I know of who has mentioned a parallel to Westworld in this specific respect, but she took it an entirely different direction than I had: instead of seeing the same tragic plot play out between William and Dolores, I had seen it in the context of the MiB's reveal about how his real-life wife (named Juliet, by the way) had died. The MiB had died inside in a metaphysical sort of way as a result of his earlier experiences as William in the park, which eventually led to his wife actually killing herself. And the MiB gains a suicide wish as a result of her suicide, going back into the park with the sole desire of the hosts becoming real and gaining the power to fight back, i.e. kill him. I like your Dolores-MiB/William take on it as well. I think I only first thought of the older William-wife Juliet take because of her name, but both are intriguing. Again, great video.

Your animations are very good but video clips from the series you insert suck real hard: 1. 360p resolution? Seriously? With all of these fancy animations? 2. Bitrate. What's up with that 128 kbps bit rate? Why not just take 1080p bluray source and use it? 3. Mono sound. Originally pretty much all movies and shows nowadays are in 5.1. KZbin supports 5.1 sound. Why you use mono when you should be using 5.1? Voice should be on center channel and effects on front left/right and rear left/right

Oh, and I was in on the discussion to which I think you're referring when someone lit into you about supporting the hosts' cause over the humans (in the show!!). Granted, I think it was just a lone angry commenter, but it raises a good point that you analyzed well here, i.e. the difference between allowing ourselves to follow the emotional logic of a storytelling arc, supporting the characters we're "intended" to support by the work's authors, and that somehow meaning that we would also be swept up in being desirous of the annihilation of the entire human race were this to come to pass in our real world. The distinction should be obvious, but OK, something good came out of that: it was a great illustration of the power of great storytelling, and how we choose to emotionally invest in it, whatever the medium.

Clearly Ford gave Maeve the escape program to test her and put her in the position to as you say "break the loop"..to give her the opportunity the make her own choice. He was betting on that emotional tie with her daughter..what she felt when William killed her daughter...her first real awakening. As for the acting I agree Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood are phenomenal but I also feel that most the acting was excellent; especially liked Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Thandie Newton and Leonardo Lam (Felix).But basically all the acting was superb as is to be expected from an HBO show like this and I thank HBO for having HBONOW as I refuse to have cable TV

I always thought Ford knew about Maeve, but I was guessing from the first time it was mentioned that he was the person who was changing her code. I mean mysterious person toying with her code under Arnold's name and who had tons of permissions and knowledge... who else could it have been? As a result, Maeve's story was always one of my favorites.

Love your review. One point though.... I think what trigger the host to transcend may not be simplified as "Trouma" , from my perspective. "LOVE" .... the ability to love truely.... may be the true journey inward to achieve "human consciousness" Deloris broke outside of her loop after her parents were brutally killed. She also escape her home to find the truth.... as she said in scene... "I lost people I care so dearly~~~" She also was asked if she wanted to be removed of the memories of the death of parents , and "Said did not want to let go of the only thing she had left of her beloved parents... Same thing with Mave... She reacted so VIOLENTLy when people were trying to remove of her daughter's memories... S1... the creators are still in exploring stage themselves... They weren't sure if they could get a "go ahead " for the next season... So they did try to give their best shot to gain popularity. " I am sure the creators will do much more home work and try to define what WW will be standing for. The drama must have a strong core big bone- to build strong frame/foundation of the arc of story. The scale of theme itself is very simple minded... thus impactful and does stand out amongst the clusters of flood of series. But doesn't have the core as strong as that of GOT, which includes everything.... of humanities...upto world's environment / the faith of the people / earth. Personally I believe the creative industries which tend to lean toward the LEFT side, wanted to lead people into "Women in power and justify the fact."" .... but the brainwash, could not withstand the hackers from Cremlins... hahaha... What do u think?

So interesting we had such opposite opinions on the Meave Arch. It may have been one of my favorites leading up to the end, but I do agree the end was brilliant I thought the entire subplot was wacky entertaining. Just the idea of her being aware of the park while trying to play the game was too brilliant. . . The secret main character though? TEDDY! xD

When Mave was going down to the train, I got goosebumps and was so emotional that I almost cried! In the train I saw it coming...I thought "they will do that - we will go back..." but I secretely hoped that she would leave the parc because i would have liked to see what she is doing...but for her chracter-arc it was the right thing to do. Great video BTW! :D

Dolores's cornerstone is William coming for her. Teddy's new loop with Dolores is exactly that to mimic William to keep her there...content...in Westworld. When she finds out the MIB is William she realize he is no different than all the rest ( of mankind) and at that point she feels it's time to let it all go. Dolores is Fedrick Nietzsche's Overman.

I looked at the Dr. Ford character very differently. I saw him as a person who doesn't crave power and manipulation, but a person of conviction. I think Dr. Ford is convinced that the androids shouldn't ever become "a real boy", and this conviction is his main motivation, while keeping the secret of the android's evolution is a secondary motivation. I'm not sure about the secondary motivation, but I kind of agree with his primary motivation. These androids are capable of being dangerous to humanity, and I think Dr. Ford recognizes that, and believes he can subtly manipulate West World into fixing this problem without anyone getting wind of it. At least until the end. Now I don't know what is going on.

William is the innocence of a human being. The Man in Black is the corruption of a human being. This is why both actors come off very different.
@davidpo55177 жыл бұрын
[Spoilers:] I'm mixed on the show. The reveal of who the Man in Black was is the best twist I've seen in forever! It was awesome!!! But the reveal that the androids can become truly alive by searching for their own consciousness in a psychological maze via trauma was just stupid. And then to have Ford--the one guy who claims the androids aren't alive--only to then go and reveal he not only believes it but he wants them to replace humanity! Just no...it ruined the realism for me.

i know i'm literally 4 years late but i just watched season 1-- and I noticed a plot hole, maybe I'm remembering the scene wrong, but when Dolores and Ford have their conversation, the one where Dolores asks if they're old friends, Ford mentions that Dolores was the only one there when Arnold died, the only one who remembers... but Teddy was clearly there as well, right? And he also obviously has flashbacks to the massacre that he and Dolores performed? I don't think it's important to the plot or anything, just an inconsistency that I noticed.

No. If you did see it coming, it just means you more than likely played Fallout 4 before Westworld came out. Because (Spoiler Alert!) the replacing humanity with Synths thing was essentially what the character "Father" wanted to do in the game. And if you played through the story of that game, it becomes pretty obvious early on that you're essentially watching what happens when someone makes a tv show about The Institute. At least that's how it was for me.

I like to think that some if not most the employees in the show are also Hosts. My reasoning of this is because the weapons within the facility (all of which are made in the facility) are seemingly built with the sole purpose of disposing the Hosts, even the security (QA?) weapons are only ever used on the Hosts. So why would QAs weapons work on other human beings if all they ever do is dispose of Hosts? Note that all the Host are almost indistinguishable to humans I also don't think that Maeve or any of the characters have "broken the loop". They're only stuck within a new loop that they, the Hosts, aren't aware of that was created by Robert Ford. Everything just seemed to convenient to me.

I wish they wouldn't use so many clichés and instead try to bring more originality. Sadly the show has gotten to a point where every episode is pretty predictable. Except maybe episode one of season 7. They don't make enough episodes like that one. But I'm glad we have Westworld. It's something new and it tells it's story in a very different way. For me it's the best show running right now. I love nearly everything about it. But then again, TV Shows always struggeled with keeping the quality and I guess that's the biggest problems with the small screen. Movies do not have to deal with these kind of problems. Still, I am continuing to watch The Walking Dead, because of some good parts that the show has, despite it's narrative problems.
@NerdSoup8 жыл бұрын
Walking dead definitely should have ended with no more than five seasons. It's not a story that can be stretched out to 8 or 9 seasons because then it just becomes repetitive.

I have a theory and wondering if u made the connection being so close to it but u havent mentioned it in any of your videos but back to my theory but i dont see ford letting himself die like that cuz like you said he wants to b immortal and he said its a narrative that hes been working on for a long time so i think that since arnolds death he has been uploading his mind while he figures out how to get thru the maze via mave or Delores which would mean the body in the secret lab being built is him all the while letting mave n delores n bernard free all the dormant hosts when ford was ready to die so they would kill all humans that would have a chance to stop the transistion n n e one with knowledge of his death or n e thing that happened there n ill bet like the other deaths he will cover them up like a plane crash or big accident cuz u have to admit the amount of control he has over the other hosts is nothing short but extraordinary makes me think he might already b a host n the body in the lab will b a back up like the seen with Theresa how he makes all those hosts stop in the whole area without saying a word even if a word was said how did it stop the ones hundreds of yards away since u already seen the rest of his family in that secret house n i coukd see him wanting to be able to spend eternity with his loved ones
