I think ford is a diluted monster and he plays the good guy when really he is the puppet master even if he can't understand that himself. Even ghost nation knows that he is not a force for good. Karma train is headed full speed towards the station come episode 10.

Isn't it interesting how Dolores slowly became like William in that they both had a darkness take over and thus their actions eventually made their loved ones commit suicide. It's so subtle but so great.

See, I saw it as William AND Delores both killed the thing they should have loved, but instead they both used up the ones who loved them in exchange for their obsessions. In the end, they each killed the one person in the world who woulda had their back. William's wife and Teddy had no other way to fight back or even make their point.

One more Easter egg. The description for this episode on HBO Now was, "Trying to kill it all the way, but I remember everything." That's a line from the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt. Hurt was covered by Johnny Cash who was known as The Man in Black.

ButcherTV nicolae cutzarida My thoughts pointed towards a tragedy more than a deliberate act of evil (Though most of the fault can be placed on William on this one) To be fair she did looked like she was gonna reach for Williams revolver which she holstered behind her, even I thought she was gonna reach for a gun and it wasn't like a front pocket or anything. Not tryna justify anything just that it was a stressful moment and Williams delusion with reality and his hostile "talk" with his daughter probably added a lot rather than just plainly "evil essence within unleashed".
@jawasstolemydroid49306 жыл бұрын
I think people gotta get this "William is really a good guy" out of their heads. He was NEVER a good guy. EVER. Not even when he chose the white hat. He didn't realize how dark he was, but the park didn't change him to make him evil. He was bad before he ever went there. His wife confirmed it: He was the best at pretending from the start. He pretended to be good, did charity work, etc, but he didn't love anyone. He likes killing.

Natsu True... but then I guess it wouldn't matter if people slipped through the cracks. Majority would still wear hats - as they are offered (as we saw in S1 with William being offered two - white or black). I would assume most are men visiting the park too - so yeah... at least 75% would be my guess.

@MrEvan666666 жыл бұрын
Yes but there can still be bad opinions especially when they are primarily based on recency bias. This was the second straight episode to be centered around flashbacks and several of which were completely unnecessary.There was already enough information to surmise the root cause of why William's wife had killed herself and having a whole episode around it was more filler than anything. We already know Teddy ends up dead from the first episode so the fact that it happened now instead of next week wasn't terribly dramatic. I am still excited for the finale in which it appears all the main characters story lines are converging, but the last two episodes did not forward the plot enough to warrant taking up twenty percent of the entire season.

Flames Of Chaos Seriously tho?! I believe she’s dead too, but Charlie is pretty adamant that she’s alive and it hard to refute the man, there are few channels on KZbin that consistently put out content that’s as broad in scope and as on point... he’s the best IMO
@aarongarabedian29416 жыл бұрын
Brandon Buzzanca So Emily tells William the story about her throwing away the jewelry box and trying to get it back after she feels bad but it was too late because the trash already got taken out. We then see that box at the end where Juliet hides Williams profile card inside leading us to believe she fished that box out after Emily threw it away. She’s dead: The writers have Emily omit the part where, after Juliet’s suicide, she finds the box with the card inside so we can get the reveal later by connecting the card in her hand to the one in the box. That’s why she knows how fucked up she was for that cause her mom went and dug it out of the trash. She’s alive: Emily still to this day actually thinks the box really went out with the trash that one day and Emily never knew her mom fished it out. Then the writers are telling us that the real Emily could never have known about Williams profile card in the box because she doesn’t know that box still exists. Which would mean the card in Emily’s hand in the park isn’t real, just another prop from Ford to throw him off, and neither is Emily. Or it’s the first part that it’s really her and she really found it all but she’s just not fatally wounded and wakes up just really badly hurt in the finale and patches herself up with the medical supplies they had used on William just right next to her. I’m almost certain it’s the first one and he shot his real daughter. Fingers crossed it’s the second cause I’m still traumatized seeing William make that mistake...

I think that when Ford told Mave he underestimated her, he was referencing the fact she overcame the programming that he put in her to escape and she chose to stay to save her child. He did the same for her because he considered her the closest thing he came to have a child. He wanted her to escape to save her but she stayed to save her child just like he tried to do for her. I think that Teddy killed himself because he didn't want to live in the real world. He said what's the point of surviving if you don't live the life you want? I don't think he wanted to fight Dolores. He just didn't think it was worth it to live other than the life he was programmed to live but also chose to continue even after awakening.

Fantastic video, my friend. Teddy (bear) killing himself didn’t surprise me a bit; it’s safe to say they’ve been setting that up for the past two episodes. My favorite moment was when Ford gave that tender, yet wonderfully powerful and inspirational speech to Maeve. If Emily is dead maybe William will try to bring her back as a host at the forge? Since this whole time William was bent on destroying the forge maybe the death of Emily helped change his mind? And throughout the episode the subtle details made me confused as to whether William had been a host this whole time, especially when they showed his profile card on the tablet and also when he was holding his wrist the same way Delos Sr did when he was malfunctioning. But if he had been a host, then he couldn't have aged like a human would do.
@jacks1bonnielass6 жыл бұрын
Well they’ve been dropping hints all season about turning guests into hosts..and I noticed William was subject #002...I believe that’s exactly what happened..he loved the park THAT much that he allowed for certain aspects of the hosts’ tech to be implemented within him, but he can still age since he is technically still human. This is the only thing that makes sense to me. That’s what I got from the episode anyway lol I could be wrong but it’s looking like that’s what’s up

Along with the idea that a host needs a certain amount of pain to fully "awaken" I'm wondering if that silent scream and music swell (sounded a little like the god mode noise especially at the end) was Delores finally actually breaking her code and getting abilities as well. (I say finally breaking her code because in watching this season something didn't seem quite right it seemed like she was stuck between the farm girl and Wyatt and was still doing things because of her code not like in her time with young William or the brief flashes when she was out in the real world)
@JP882646 жыл бұрын
Thinking back on the episode, I think William’s daughter is a host. For me, the tale she tells about the music box tells us that. She herself says how she felt bad because she could never return the box to her mother... but we know that the box wasn’t thrown out; instead the mother found and kept it. When it’s revealed that William’s daughter had the card, we are lead to believe shes real. However she can’t, because if she was, she would know about the box not being thrown out, as we the audience know that the box contained the card.
@DanCGe6 жыл бұрын
Nine Inch Nails hit track "Hurt" was prominently used throughout the episode. The synopsis is a lyric from the song. Ford semi-quotes it when he says, "she'll let you down", followed by Elsie's "you're going to hurt me". Perhaps the most prominent usage of the song is the record-skipping of the static in the Dolores/Teddy final scene

When William was talking to his wife in the flashback and she was pretending to be asleep...he said he didnt belong in this world. Most ppl will think hes a robot but I think its because he fell in love with Dolores in the other world. He transitions into the man in black because he was bitter caring for Dolores but he can never be with her. So when he goes back to the game from the real world and he would kill Dolores (and Maeve with her daughter). They were two he continued to return to in the game. They showed he fell for Dolores but then cathing her forgetting him was that point for darkness in him he questioned as he became disillusioned with the reality/game. What they havent shown is why he returned to maeve enough that it was a triggering memory when losing her daughter. Why was she taken and moved to be the madam at the bar rather then decommissioned
@starlingwatch39216 жыл бұрын
Great summary and commentary, thank you. The bar scene between William and Ford was the most compelling to me. For 30 years these two have have an agreement to peaceful co-existance for their projects. Season 1 is the outcome of Ford realizing that the Forge is reaching out to his hosts - that's the voice they are hearing. Ford realizes that the Forge can also topple William easily enough - just release William's profile and see what he does (causes his wife to suicide and kills his own daughter). I think of the Forge as this new character, kind of like the Master Control Program in the original Tron movie, paranoid and hungry to consume the entire world. Ford's final story is to get his hosts to destroy the Forge. Ford's brilliance is to be able to influence all of these people (hosts and humans) to get to the Forge, ally with one another and destroy the Forge.
@Atlas_Redux6 жыл бұрын
Wild idea. Ford has been running simulations with their copies to see the chain of events in the real world. He isn't a super-genious with great calculated predictions. He used the tools he had. Their backups. And played simulations to see what would happen. Including timing his interruption at the party.

Poor Cyclops. He can never catch a break no matter the movie or TV show it seems. Side note. I'm thinking that William's Daughter is a host also. They didn't show the results of the scan the DELOS team did on her, when they were clear to point out that Williams read as human. Plus she also said she went back for the music box from the trash, and it was gone, the trash had been taken out already. Then they show her Mother still had the box, it's what she kept his file in. I know it's a little thing to grasp onto, but that's kinda what this show does at times eh? The little things.
@crudman696 жыл бұрын
Yeah the music box thing could indicate that she was a host - she didn't mention to William that it was recovered by her mother when she found the card. Although there is a chance that the card was moved after her death and then she found it. William cutting her arm or the scan showing positive would have been a bit too easy.

Who knows? In a way I feel bad for William. William is experiencing a very pure form of gas-lighting from Ford in that Ford's "narrative" was designed to stoke his paranoia, which was something that the profile came up. Part of gas-lighting is taking advantage of a persons psychological shortcomings in the lies the narcissist is feeding the victim. And it can breed paranoia in the victim. Only in this case, William was very much a psychopath to begin with.

Since William found himself aka the man in black because of Dolores, it's only natural that his arc ends with her. They've been on similar paths this season, they have to meet up again in ep 10 and have a conclusion. Whether it be William redeeming himself, Dolores killing him, they timing up or something completely different, they'll inevitably cross paths in the finale. Ford did say that he must go back to his beginning.

Great video, as always! I agree with everything you said, except your reasoning behind Ford's actions with Bernard. Bernard is already fully conscious, Ford is just making him do the hard things he can't do, so his species can survive and become the new dominant form of life on the planet. Elsie is a lovely person, but would eventually betray him when it came down to choosing humans or hosts. Ford even says "You have an entirely new species to consider"

I find it hard to believe they added the story of the music box and the shot of it later on for nothing... it is possible that it is a proof that William’s daughter was indeed a host. The story of William’s daughter about the music box, contradicts with the appearance of the box later in the episode. So... you might suggest that William’s daughter just didn’t know that her mother had retrieved it. However, what if it contradicts just because ford didn’t know her mother had found it. If we assume William’s daughter is indeed a host, so her story is being told by ford. And in that story her mother is already described as drunk. This might suggest that Ford just didn’t think her drunken mother would care or notice that she had thrown it away. And thus it is forever gone in his version of the story. And thats why the stories contradict. Two more points that might suggest she is a host: we didn’t get to see the result of the security check the rescue team had conducted on her. And seriously how did she find William in the huge park??? Easy, she’s a host and was told by Ford where to go. William just assumed that the card is a proof she is real. But what if ford knew that he’ll think that, providing her with the card. William clearly said to Emily that only he knows about it... but ford knew aswell since he gave it to him.

This Emily is a host, because she doesn't know her mother kept the profile card in the music box.The profile card she was holding has to be a copy. If she got the card from the music box, she would know the box wasn't emptied with the trash. That's why William decided not to kill himself.

Thanks for your work on this. The editing is great for this review. This show is a real grind at times, so, your summation adds a lot to it(maybe giving too much credit for some moments). The writing of the episodes this season is getting lack-luster while the acting and directing is in over-dive. My thoughts: * The direction that William is a host removes all power from killing his daughter. So, please, stop that now. * Brain scanners in a hat? May have well said the brain activity was being recorded by magic. Nannites in the water/whiskey would allow me to suspend my disbelief. Everyone at the park drinks, not everyone wears a hat (especially when doing the ‘Human’ parts or life). Just collect the nannites in the outhouses... Also, a directionless data broadcast of ~1TB/sec?!? Is everyone wearing a microwave on their head? * These trained soldiers are incredibly bad at what they do. I think it should be clear that the strap for the weapon is not a piece of velcro! It secures the weapon at a position that an opponent can directly take it from you. An example of disappointing writing-or a need for extra pages-which seemed superfluous. * Teddy's payoff was a slow burn tale that went out with the impact of an untended fire. There was just so much more to attend to in the story. * Remind me why we went to Japan again. Was it so we could have ninjas? If so, that _was_ cool. What a waste of time/money.

Has William been generally hard to kill in live ammo Westworld because he's had organs and bone modded way earlier? So not full on J.Delos replicant mode, but just impervious enough to "play the game" for longer periods than is reasonable, more so than the average Joe. As the big cheese one might avail oneself of a few upgrades. l Don't see how else he's survived so many hits without "power ups" (So many gaming references in WW!) and he seemed decidedly perked up by the time he put down the rescue squad, health boosts notwithstanding. Apart from the direct reference to Yul Brynner in Season One this would be a cool alt nod to "The Gunslinger" character from the OG WW- ie all black everything/murderous/unstoppable. May also explain him going for his arm in the same spot Bernard hooked himself up (unless in order to get "realer" hes removing the beacon that keeps magically drawing Westworld bullets to his arms- he gets shot there a LOT lol)

Not necessarily in this episode, but in the last; I loved the ending scene where they used a piano version on Nirvana’s ‘Heart Shaped Box’. I didn’t realize it at first, but then totally picked up on the melody. Going along with the comment about Johnny Cash being labeled a MIB I just can’t get over how deeply connected the producers and writers are making this show. After each episode, I need to take a walk. Between this show, altered carbon, and the Matrix I don’t even know what to expect in our own future.

Very rarely, a serie can have a breakout episode, follow by another, even better episode. Westworld have done it 4 consecutive times in the last 4 weeks like itwas a walk inthe park. Good job to the producers and directors of the serie, and good job to you Charlie. I would say this serie have done what GOT has done over 8 seasons in as little as 2 seasons, in terms of hype build up. Lets see how it all ends.

The man in black...is already a host. He's been switched. In this episode, he can't recall that past interaction when his daughter asked him. Events outside of the park is only recorded so much from the brain scans when guests entered / re-entered into the park. e.g. It's like a scheduled backup of the brain when the guests entered the park (e.g. delta scans). That last interaction with his daughter was lost (that's why you see him looking quite confused / lost when his daughter asked him "Do you remember?"). Also, Ford, via system interaction, altered the scan result of William when he was scanned by the park's security.
@Mikepereich6 жыл бұрын
Few things: 1) why does William keep looking at his wrist ? Like there's an implant or something? 2) It's oversteps Ford's intelligence to say he's planned out this entire thing 3) It's still possible that William's daughter was a host, but then again she was cleared right? But then again, so was Bernard to a different degree.

This episode was absolutely insane & one of the few times where I've felt a show impact me the way Game of Thrones has. Can't believe it took me until season 2 to start watching this show. Also, Ed Harris deserves all the awards for his acting this season, specifically this episode.

Interesting Easter Egg to note: The book "Slaughter House 5," by Kurt Vonnegut is the book William uses to hide the card. MUCH METAPHOR. The book's title is sort of a misleading title in a way (relative to the story) but accurately represents who William's actual identity is which he put in the book - a killer who goes on his "yearly excursion." this hints at who he is and what the wife and daughter will find on the card. Funny that William would hide himself in that book. AND the book is all about a race of aliens who kidnap the main character and show him how they view all of time and space at once. They see past - present - future in the same way that we see left right and center. They also manage to teach the main character how truly primitive the humans are even though they think so highly of themselves; that life and the universe is out of our control because things are destined to be what they will - time is set and our choices are not our own. which is a huge allusion to how the story is being told and especially to how the story of this ninth episode is being told. William is trying to figure things out by looking back over his life and rethinking his choices and struggling to come to terms with what choices were really his. And Dolores had a pretty piece of dialogue about finally being the first true beings free to make their own choices once they reach the forge. Its such a small - but dammmm clever reference and easter egg.

Taking several p90 shot to the chest and you think she's still alive? you can clearly see 1 of the wounds right where her heart is, she is dead. Thats the whole point, William is now responsible for his wifes death indierctly and his daughters death directly, this is the man he is, there is no redemption, this is how far he has fallen. The delores and teddy scene was Epic, Teddy was truely free, and Dolores realising what she has done and what she has lost, the look of confusion and pain and lost then the silent scream was amazing.

Seems like a huge oversight that Delos never put in a killswitch for all the hosts or some type of remote control to the system at least. Really asking for trouble there by letting one old dude, even if he is as badass as Anthony Hopkins, have free reign to setup whatever sabotage mechanisms over the years.
@flamesofchaos136 жыл бұрын
You do realize there was the bomb explosives if they leave park grounds *AND* that their very Creator/Co-Boss wanted it all to happen so he would stop any fail-safe to occur, An the very deal the company made with him was to allow free reign of them right!
@honestinsincerity22706 жыл бұрын
Flames Of Chaos - Fat lot of good that's doing them now! Why didn't anyone think to make a remote kill switch on their possibly killer robots that are indistinguishable to humans?!! If I ever design a robot, the first thing I'm making is a button to kill it immediately and with one press.
@Pred8tor7866 жыл бұрын
"freeze all motor functions" used to be the killswitch until ford messed with the hosts
@TheMinecraftHype6 жыл бұрын
Honestly AV 2 Yes... but you aren't the owner or creator - Ford is. The one whom doesn't want the hosts to be stopped. Wouldn't make much sense if he made a remote kill switch.
@honestinsincerity22706 жыл бұрын
The Witch King of Angmar v - Yes, agreed it wouldn’t make much sense for Ford to do anything like that. But I bet william and the other board members of Delos are really wishing they’d put SOME type of last ditch fail safe to shut down all hosts. And I know for good storytelling, of course, there couldn’t be anything like that and, hypothetically, even if there were something in the plot about it they could always say Ford took that over and shut it down too. But please let this be a lesson to any android creating scientists: you put in that goddamn kill switch from the very first version! When we all get murdered by a hot southern belle in a corset, we’re gonna be wishing they did.

I think MIB is so caught up in WW that he can't tell the difference between the real world and the fantasy. I was kinda confused-- when he revealed the truth, HE looked down at his arm like he had a connection port... And then at the end, HE dug the knife into same forearm like he's trying to dig out the port. Is he a host? Did he actually make himself immortal after all???!!

No, but he's spent so much time in his life "pretending" that he can't separate fantasy from reality anymore. When his wife pulled up his profile you could see they had diagnosed him with several psychiatric disorders.

if you watch it at 0.25 speed or go through the frames its easier to see and it looks like a host hale. I think this could be part of the whole immortality thing in the forge, like for every guest data stored in there there is a host body's that they can actually use the data they collect.

Hi there Emily fans, I want Emily to be alive and I think there are a few hints that show William shot just her host. (And no, I don't think Will is a host.) So let's check the 7 reasons, why the real Emily is still alive: 1) First, the security did not check Emily, they checked only William. 2) Second, Emily was telling Will the story, that she blamed herself for the death of her mum also because she threw away the balerina box and she couldnt get the box back, when she changed her mind, but she did not mention that she found it later. Maybe the host did not know this detail and it sure wouldnt be a problem for Ford to give the host Emily Will's profile. 3) Third, Will does not finish the host test on Emily. 4) Fourth, she was able to find her Dad twice way too easily. As Will says, you can search weeks and not find the one you are searching for. 5) Fifth, what was the real Emily doing in the Raj World? And where did she change her clothes and get a horse afterwards? 6) Sixth, she got some bullets in her chest, yes, but she died the second he shot her, just likes host "die" because they are programmed to. 7) Seventh... how the hell would the real Emily (who hates the park) learn Lakota language?? Hosts on the other hand know all the languages when they are told to. Yeah, most of these "reasons" can be smashed in a way that is hinting that the real Emily is really dead, shot by William, but I believe, she is not.

Anyone notice how Emily says that a little dancer would pop up in the "center" once the box was opened? While it clearly showed that it was at the side? Right after this dialog William raises a good eye-brown when talking to her right after. I don't know, could be just me being to picky with words. If this is indeed a miss information, then it proves Emily is indeed a host I guess.

Wow that was fast, thanks Charlie! William's daughter's probably dead though, they made a point of showing the bullet hole to the heart. Also, I have some doubts Ford('s ghost) is actually trying to "awaken" Bernard through pain, at this point, instead using him as a proxy/handpuppet to play his game with William.
