In your opinion, is CO2 tolerance the largest factor to length of time underwater? Great video.
@WettieNZ
@WettieNZ Жыл бұрын
No not for spearfishing. The largest factor is over all fitness as when spearfishing you are making multiple dives with varying conditions. As mentioned holding your breath while spearfishing is very different to pure freediving. It is more safe to treat them as very different disciplines. You will build a better CO2 tolerence overtime, which can make you more susceptible to shallow water blackout. It is always suggested to be conservative with your breath hold when spearfishing as there are many more factors involved than Freediving.

@@WettieNZ Thank you for such a great explainer on the difference. I am presently landlocked, so I am doing pool training (a poor substitute) but this is really great information.

Great videos! :) How do you keep your breath hold skills maintained ober periods when there is less diving opportunities? I would be a shame to loose lots of the progress that is built up over time.

Staying generally fit will help. I find running helps keep good base of fitness as well as general cross training. But then also important to train when you get out diving.

I just noticed Sophie has got a pair of the DiveR "mermaid" fins...I was just looking at getting a pair, but with the monochrome print, just the other day. How does she like using them? Did she get M or Soft? Great mini-series of vids mate...you just got yourself a new subbie here! ;)
@WettieNZ
@WettieNZ 21 күн бұрын
Thank you for your support! She loves them, great fins. She has Soft but would prefer medium as the Soft can limit out a bit with punch when diving in current or fighting fish.

What is your way or recommendation for equalization? At about 3:20 you start the dive with a nose pinch (equalize) just below the surface, afterwards no more nose pinches. So i was wondering what technique you are using and whats the impact on relaxation and therefore dive time.
@WettieNZ
@WettieNZ Жыл бұрын
This depends on how free my sinuses are on a particular day. Its not so much a technique but just luck from many years of equalising and my body adapting well to it. I often pinch my nose to initiate the first equalise then after that can do hands free by slighting blowing out my nose against my mask when under pressure. There is enough pressure from my mask to help equalise and make sure I don't waste air. Equalising gets easier over time.

Awesome video. Question.. when you breach the surface from ascent. Should we just 'breathe normally ' or do we 'exhale out hard' and then breathe normally? Obviously spear fishing is different than free diving sport so I honestly don't know. But want to do it 'right".. thanks
@fishhunter348
@fishhunter348 3 жыл бұрын
Don't exhale hard, it will increase your risk of blackout. After surfacing from deeper dives it is good practice to do at least 3 hook breaths. Google it or better still take a freediving course from someone who spearfishes.
@WettieNZ
@WettieNZ 3 жыл бұрын
As Fish hunter below mentioned. This is why ideally you want your snorkel out when making a dive as it allows you to easily take breaths back on the surface without having to blow water out of your snorkel. Will talk more in depth about this in Part 3 and 4. The deeper you go it pays to be more strict with recovery. Thank you.

Hello and thank you for the tips. Seems that you have a lot more fish in NZ than we have in french west indies. Ì have a remark thought about the diving technique. In every course i took, and every good hunter i know, we learn to dive with our head perfectly align with our bodies and not looking down like you do in the videos. This way we can reach the depth rapidly with less resistance from the water, being perfectly vertical. What do you think about it? I think that is the best way to do it.

At 6:15 I see you were not pinching your nose during the decent to help with equalising. This is not something I’ve ever been able to do. Care to elaborate? :)
@WettieNZ
@WettieNZ 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, I am able to equalise hands free (most of the time). Just the pressure of my mask with a slight push from the nose I can equalise. I have just got better at this over time as my body naturally has got more comfortable with equalising. When I first started I really struggled, but my sinuses have got better over time. Ensure you drink lots of water and stay away from dairy before and during dives to reduce build up in your sinuses and make it easy to equalise.

@@WettieNZ thank you a lot for these tips. I am horrible at equalizing and now I know why...I chuck a milkshake before spearfishing *facepalm*. I'm gonna stick to orange juice and I'll see if if helps.
