Part 1 of a four part series on increasing your breath-hold and depth while spearfishing. In this episode we will start with the 0-10 metres and basics ideas and techniques that will hopefully help with progression of breath-hold, depth and comfort. Specifically in relation to Spearfishing.

Thank you. I tend to slide snorkel between two back straps on my mask. This locates the top of snorkel at optimal point of my head and means when snorkel is out of my mouth it comfortably tucks under chin, so to not swing and twist around.

Great video. One comment. For the kicking keep your knees straight it's way more efficient. Everything else was spot on.
@WettieNZ
@WettieNZ Жыл бұрын
Yes it is more efficient to keep legs straight for maximising depth and breath hold on single dive. But when SPEARFISHING and trying to extend your longevity through a day, bendy your knees can increase your durability. As opposed to perfect FREEDIVING technique which will optimise performance for short period, but burn you out through the day when combined with many factors like long surface swimming, current, repetitive dives of possibly 60 - 100 dives in a day etc.
@Chris-hx7ub
@Chris-hx7ub Жыл бұрын
@Wettie TV guess to each their own. Most of the time I spearfish I have a boat that picks us up and drifts with us. Fighting current sucks i wouldnt be able to swim and breath up and relax. Maybe your doing a lot more swimming and dives then me spearfishing in a day? Or diving a lot deeper? Most of my spearfishing is shallow in 45 feet on a good day I have done 60 to 100 dives and we tend to use slightly different tactic, I hit the bottom bc viz is pretty bad some days 5 ft some days 30 but usually 10 or so. Then the fish swim away when ur going down but if you go next to a rock and dont move they are curious and seem to come back in pretty quick. I rarely have good luck shooting down they seem to scatter to quick in New England. But it deffineatly seems to work for you, viz is way better and you have tons of fish around. Great videos. Have fun fishing.

@@WettieNZ- I am glad you pointed this out. I am 66 and speared and take photos (same techniques) most of my life. Always found a slight bent knee gives me a more relaxed dive and takes less energy. The huge growth and popularity of freediving have given better access to techniques. I am still always open to learning. I gave a good period to try their more straight knee finning. As you said. Good for deeper and fewer dives, but overall I find it more tiring.

Great video. I mainly do shallow cold water diving and one thing that helps is a dive vest. Because I’m skinny and using a 5mm wettie wetsuit I find my weight belt is chockers with lead. Taking some off and moving them to the back and front of the vest helps keep me even in the water and more comfortable.

When ascending I feel it to be very heavy and struggle abit. Is this the correct weight for shallow dives. My suit is a 5mm open cell.
@aleshaleee
@aleshaleee 2 жыл бұрын
Way to much weight. Half that. You want to be neutrally boyent at whatever is the lowest depth you are diving and above that you should be floating up. Less is best. It could save your life if you blackout.

@@aleshaleee 100% less is best. If you exhale on the surface and sink like a rock, you have too much weight. If you blackout and are not heavy at least you will be on the surface which is easier for a buddy to grab you rather than sinking to the bottom.

Could anyone tell me what the fish at 08:25 is (the big one with the vertical black stripes) ? I have seen. heaps of them in NZ but they don't seem to be listed on any site I could find (most sites only list the major yummy species like snappers, butterfish, maomaos, mokis etc)
@WettieNZ
@WettieNZ Жыл бұрын
That is a Red Moki or Banded Morwong (Name in Australia). Most people in NZ tend to not target these as they slow growing, easy to over pressure and not the best eating.

How hard do you have to blow through your nose to equalize my mask comes off my face then gets full of water I don't actually blow all that hard but cant seem to go any deeper than 3/4m with out starting to feel like I need to surface due to getting like a sore tight head feeling etc any help would be appreciated forgot to add super beginner
@WettieNZ
@WettieNZ Жыл бұрын
It should not require much effort to equalise. If it does, you may have sinus blockages or be equalising too late. Best to pre-equalise on the surface before diving, then constantly equalise all the way down before pressure comes on. With time your body will adapt better. Make sure to hold your nose when equalising as your mask won't come off your face then. You shouldn't need to equalise your mask pressure (separate to equalising your ears) with the current depths you are diving.

Hey what things would you suggest eating before a dive ?
@WettieNZ
@WettieNZ Жыл бұрын
You just need to see what your body digests best. Some people won't eat before a dive, different diet options work for different people. Personally I find its best to not have too full of a stomach before a dive as digestion will impede your focus and breath hold. But you still want some energy!

@WettieNZ
@WettieNZ 2 жыл бұрын
Pre-equalise before going below the surface to open tubes. Unfortunately some people do just struggle to equalise and in exrtreme cases people have to go down feet first. Make sure to constantly equalise the entire way down before pressure comes on.
@sportysbusiness
@sportysbusiness 2 жыл бұрын
When learning, most people take a big deep breath before trying to equalise but that actually puts too much pressure on your eardrums, or they equalise when the ear is already hurting, which is far too late. When practicing, breath OUT, relax, and then gently equalise until you feel your ears pop. If that still doesn't work, it may be your tubes are blocked which is usually from mucus, which is why he said don't eat dairy products (that are highly inflammatory in most people). In rare occasions, your tubes are just rigid, so the more you practice this (like sat on the couch watching TV!) the easier it gets when you get in the water. Good luck!

Do u have any advice for someone that freaks out, when ever water gets in the snorkel, then try to breath through the nose, but realises that they can't & then really shits themselves. 😂😂😂😂😂. It's weird, I can swim ( not very strong at it). I have no problem diving. But the breathing part freaks me out.
@WettieNZ
@WettieNZ 2 жыл бұрын
That is not unusual and with time in the water with your mask and snorkel on you will get more comfortable. Ensure you have your snorkel angled behind your head so it is less likely to have water splashed into it wile on the surface. Practice a lot using a snorkel until it becomes second nature. Good luck!
