I usually don’t watch many movies, and many friends ask me why. When I watch a movie, it’s like it touches my soul and everything in it. When I was younger I always thought that it was unfair, because life in a movie is often plain, simple, linear, while my (and everyone’s) life is complicated and difficult. After watching a movie I usually feel empty and drained because I am overly sensitive. Even though this isn’t the topic of this song, it reminded me of this “problem” I had and still have: movies are something beautiful, but they can really hurt me. In the end “the meaning of life doesn’t seem to shine like that screen”, and it’s something hard to accept.

I thought I was the only one. It was especially intense when I was a child. I would run from the room when there was a sad song playing because it would just hit me so hard.

We were on our way home (Denmark) from a vacation to France. We had listened to lots of fun and great music, each of us (my sister, father, mother and I) choosing a song one after the other. It was getting dark, windy, cold, rainy. Sleepy, too. My father then put on this song as I stared out at the lights through a wet window. All four of us were almost completely quiet throughout the entirety of the song. It was as if my father just knew exactly what would we all wanted, needed, to hear at that particular moment. I've rarely had such an emotional reaction to a song that wasn't during a concert, but I remember feeling bliss, comfort and melancholy at the same time. I don't think I'll forget that memory. Thank you, father and Weyes Blood.

The declaration “I want to be the star of my own” is some beautiful symbolism especially given the otherwise uncertain nature of the album. Within all that uncertainty and change - looking for something to believe or hold onto - there is in every one of us the capacity to turn it into something beautiful. To see life for its beauty and actualize our potential to become something more. To become the lead role in our own lives and be a positive force in this chaotic world. She even says in andromeda, “we all want something new but can seem to follow through”. Movies is a beautiful moment of clarity in the album. Its like one of those moments where everything seems to click and you feel like you could do anything. But the irony is that real life isnt a movie. It doesnt always pan out with a story book ending. It almost never does. But “i want to be the star of my own” is self aware in its own irony. She is saying that even though life will never be a movie, she still wants to make the most of the mess. And thats pretty beautiful if you ask me. What more can anyone truly ask for? Thats what being a star really means

It's beautiful how magic can be created by weaving together earnestly simple yet resonant lyrics and dramatic, majestic instrumentals. "Movies" is simply an existential anthem for the new generation. "Titanic Rising" deserves much more recognition than it received at the time of its release.
