Evgeny Sveschnikov, the Great Maestro of the chessboard passed away last week. I studied his games since the late 1970s. I always tried to follow his opening repertoire. RIP.

Wow -here in Oz we are at the Winter Solstice...and I'm playing in a Correspondence Theme tourney of the Sveshnikov opening [B33]. Having just located this video is amazing!! Feel I'm doing him an honor at this time! Any more videos of this man in action, please?!

Sveshnikov playing the Sveshnikov!

This was not Sveshnikov, but Kalashnikov defence, because he played 4...e5 instead of 4...Nf6! Since ages Sveshnikov nearly always plays only Kalashnikov

Transposition, but still good game
@Grandcapi
@Grandcapi 5 жыл бұрын
@@beloglavisup2 I do not think it is a transposition. In the so called normal line ...a6 and b5 are played (after ...Nf6, of course) but here there is already a pawn on a4.

And there is an interesting line 4...e5 5.Nb5 a6 when 6.Nd6+ might be answered with ...Bd6 7.Qd6 and Qe7 or Qf6. The move Qe7 is often played by the chinese GM Lao Chi.

@@Grandcapi This is a Sveshnikov with transposition. That is the very same variation which you can create via 1. e4 c5 2. Hf3 Hc6 3. d4 cd: 4. Hd4: Hf6 5. Hc3 e5 6. Hdb5 d6 7. a4 a6 8. Ha3 Fe7 as well which is a well-known side variation in the Sveshnikov

After black played Be6 to give extra protection to the knight. White should have played Rh - Re1 attacking the pawn on e4. But instead, she just drained up like 3+ minutes on her clock and played the passive move Rd2 which I did not understand. I mean I understand it's prophelactic move so that she adds extra protection to her pawn on c2 since black has the open C-file. I just thought it was played a little prematurely by her and she used up a ton of time on the clock!!! And also, I thought that castling queen-side was inaccurate by white. She had a queenside pawn majority. Better to have castled king-side and try to take advantage of the queenside pawn majority while defending against the potentially passed pawn on e4.

I assume the idea behind Rd2 was to follow it up with Rhd1. If you had two moves in a row, you'd play that. I think she panicked as she was using too much time and just went for that without considering he can just move the knight before she can play Rhd1

Knight is trapped in e5, guess thats why she spent time there

Good lesson! But black's Nxe4 idea was somehow unclear.

I thought she played pretty badly myself. She knew it also. Win some lose some is all it is.

Yes it is. The non write rules in chess says tou must shake your hand when you loose the game. Not throw the pieces over the board.

His pawn twirling was annoying to me as a spectator. And what gives with his trying out a king move but not releasing it? Sveshnikov used to be a chess hero of mine, but he seems to be a very annoying opponent. Still does not excuse what she dis.
