It wouldn't be out of proportion to bar him from school sports for a while. However it should be noted that children that age, particularly boys, have a harder time controlling their impulses as consistently as an adult would, because the part of their brains which perform executive function isn't full developed yet. At the same time, their emotional responses are far more heightened than an adult's. Most young men will have adult level executive function by 18, but for some it takes them until they're 25, which is why you see some frat boy behavior in college, but very few of those boys will still act that way even a year or two after graduating. 14 is not too young to impose consequences for something like this -- they're not toddlers after all. A probationary ban for some period time from sports is certainly reasonable. But it's far too early to impose adult level consequences, like criminal prosecution or permanent barring from student activities. Normal kids this age do things they know they shouldn't, stuff they don't even *want* to do, because they're all a little out of control. We shouldn't jump to the conlusion one is a sociopath from a single event. In a year or two this kid could be very different.

Another sport where you aren't 1v1ing another student? Sure. Could also join recreational teams outside of school. I didn't say anything about not wrestling beyond high school either, but it SHOULD be on his record so the college knows he has potential to be dangerous. @@byzoemay You're kidding right? You don't think this social media pile-on will have no repercussions for his future? You're either incredibly naive or dishonest. Also, it's a kid who got angry, this isn't a friggin serial killer. We don't need to have him go door to door explaining how he is a violent assailant. Kids aren't allowed to learn from mistakes anymore, because people with too much time on their hands and a need to find an enemy have a voice on social media. School fights happen every... friggin... day, and these kids go on to be productive and kind members of society. It's called growing up.... I ask you, what do you think would provide better outcomes? Counseling for the kid to get at the root of the problem? Maybe he's got family issues or a chemical imbalance. Or a social media witch hunt trying to alienate him from society for a mistake he made as a child. Your mentality makes lifelong criminals.

They aren't going to expel him for punching someone once and certainly not jail a first time minor offender. I do agree he should be banned for the rest of high school from sporting events though. And yes charged with assault but no judge is gonna put him in juvenile detention for that, they'll suspend the sentence and make him do anger management classes and probably some amount of hours of community service. Gotta be realistic in these situations and consider all factors. Like he is a minor and most likely a first offense. He doesn't need his life ruined over that but to be held accountable and pay restitution to the person he assaulted. I was assaulted once like that on a bus and i refused to press charges because i hit him back then we wrestled until we got broke up. He had respect for me not having him arrested and we became friends. Even now i am glad i didn't have him charged with anything. Banning him from competing and maybe some disciplinary action at his school is enough. Y'all gotta chill. I punched a kid in the face and he had a black eye for weeks. My parents disciplined me and the other kids parents just talked to me for a bit about why and we all moved on. Hell, I was even friends with him in the later years of HS. @@OldBenKenobi2318 I wrestled and you need to understand that when you do physical stuff like this with people there is a sense of trust that you are not trying to hurt them. Its 100% critical to the sport of wrestling because there are many, many times when it is very easy to break that trust if you want a win. And sometimes breaking that trust can hurt people real bad if you want. This is a fundamental thing you learn when you wrestle. When you break that trust you will never wrestle again. Believe me. This kid, to say the other kid should not be banned, is huge. I would never, ever wrestle a kid that did this.
