WGU | D153 CompTIA Pentest+ ✅

The CompTIA Pentest+ certification was required in order for me to pass the D153 Penetration and Vulnerability Analysis class at WGU. I passed the exam this morning! Does this mean I'm finished with my degree? I think so :)

Wow 😂I'm not the only one...I got 757 on 07/05/24 I used my college class TestOut course and the official CompTIA Cert Master and it was enough... I thought 💭 the same I didn't do that well with the PBQs. I didn't think I would pass. I kept thinking do the best I can on the questions and maybe not so well on the PBQs, just hope it's enough. Yes by far this is harder than the Other ones I've taken and passed A+, Network+ and Security+. 🎉 Congratulations to you also!

In between then I'll probably study for other security certifications or continue practicing penetration testing and ethical hacking.

Used to be nervous about background noise but after 9 CompTIA tests all online I'm fairly confident they don't care about noisy neighbors I live in an apartment and everyone's loud plus my baby cried in a lot of them but it always gives me anxiety. I know they do well with Sophia and Study, but haven’t seen much on university level transfers. Also if you have, were you able to check with WGU beforehand or only once you were in the admission process

@@heyim-jay I didn't transfer credit from another university. You can always call WGU and talk to someone about it, but they'll probably tell you to just apply first. They can't determine over the phone exactly which of your university credits will transfer. You'd have to officially submit it first. You can go through most of the enrollment process though without paying anything (including the transcript evaluations). They almost always have a free code on their website to apply for free.

Just passed this class/cert this past sunday. I did not feel ready at all and got a 754. I get the same feeling with a lot of CompTIA certs, but this one, I was at the end, reviewed a few questions and decided that I was probably going to fail. I clicked through the survey and saw the pass and felt a huge relief... one class left and im done

So I took the Network+ at an office building. And I had someone barge into my locked room and nearly caused me to fail. I had a sign that said please do not disturb, but some lady still went and got facilities to open the door. Thankfully the proctor didn’t suspect any cheating and made me rescan the room after I yelled at the lady to leave. I ended up passing with a 777 or so, but I was so frazzled, I was certain I was going to fail.

Thanks! The external certifications will likely take longer than your other classes. If I didn't have any going in and I have to do them all at WGU, it would probably take me at least a couple extra months.

btw once the pentest+ class shows "passed" they'll send you a few emails congratulating you, your mentor will sign you up for graduation where you can order your degree to your house, and after A few days your classes will disappear on the wgu main page and it'll show a big congratulations animation

Hey man I just want to start off with CONGRATULATIONS! You absolutely killed this and we're all proud of you. I know the feeling of both failing a CompTIA exam (failed Linux+ twice, both times by 1 or 2 questions, back when it was LPIC-1) as well as thinking you will fail but pulling through. A passing grade is a passing grade! I've got a couple more advanced questions for you, but this might be good video topics for you if you're up for it. 1) Which classes did you end up taking at WGU and crushing in the 30 days? I'm asking because I am broke as a joke, but am trying to budget out my money before going into WGU. I've been stressing about getting as many classes/certifications done before going in to make sure I only take one semester at WGU because ultimately that's the cheapest option. Right now I'm planning on taking CySA+ and PenTest+ before enrolling, and now I'm curious if maybe that's not the best use of my time/money. 2) I got my Security+ in the past, but it has lapsed. I'm going to get it renewed shortly so I can possibly get a decent job while working on my degrees at WGU. Compared to the SEC+, how much more challenging is CySA+ / PenTest+ ? I have homelab experience with running various servers, network gear, etc. I also have experience with CTFs and HackTheBox/TryHackMe. Just trying to figure out how much more of a leap it is 3) Do I need to learn Powershell and Windows MSCA type stuff for the PenTest+? Or is knowing BurpSuite/NetCat/etc. enough? I have been running Linux as my primary for years, so I'm super out of touch with Windows. 4) What is your current job title, and how were you able to get it? I'm stuck in this pattern where in order to provide for my whole family I need to make 2x what I am currently able to make at a random help desk gig. However I have kids, and therefore cannot work full time unless I make that 2x and provide both myself and my partners paycheck. I'm trying to get into a NOC or something as an analyst, but I can't seem to make the cut. Anyways man, congratulations again and I wish you all the best. Thanks! 1. I took 10 classes. 4 general education, 2 that required external certifications (Pentest+ and ITIL), 3 security related classes (C839, C838, 844), and the capstone. 2. I skipped the CySA+ by transferring in credit so I'm not sure now hard it is. The Pentest+ is much harder than the Security+ 3. You don't need to be an expert on Powershell, but it's included in the objectives so you should learn some of it because it might be on the exam. partners.comptia.org/docs/default-source/resources/comptia-pentest-pt0-002-exam-objectives-(4-0) 4. I'm been working in IT for about 10 years. I started a helpdesk analyst. In-between calls I would study security and at home I would practice would I learned using VirtualBox and labs. Eventually I had enough experience and certifications to get a position focused in security and that's been my career ever since. Work experience is best, but aside from that, getting certifications is your best way to show employers your serious about security and get your foot in the door... at least that's how it was for me.

So far in the first 24 days, I've completed 5 classes. one of those included ITIL Foundations. I'm working on A+, which should only take me around 5 days. Then its Project+. Luckily I have surgery March 1st and will have 14 days off work to recover. I'm going to use that 14 days to just go nuts studying and scheduling as many exams as I can. Then march 27 I'm attending a NESSUS class through work (ARMY), and that should help me out when I make it to the PENTEST+ cert. It's only been 24 days since I started, and I'm almost to 50% completion of my degree. I just need some words of encouragement, I guess.

WGU provides the official CompTIA CertMaster Learn course for the Pentest+. It might be enough to pass, but I'd still recommend also using TryHackMe for more hands on experience.

any way to maybe get some advice on how to get into the GRC side of Cybersecurity? I'm a bit older than you and i am changing careers and i've read quite a bit that GRC is a good way to get a foot in the door with cybersecurity. I'm not a very technical person but im learning through going to school and certifications. I want to get maybe a year or two in general IT to get my feet wet but i want to level up quickly.

GRC can be different depending on the size of the company and what they do. For example, larger companies usually separate GRC into their own teams (Risk Management team, Compliance team, etc). I'd have to really think about the best way to get started, but learning about regulatory requirements (GDPR, CCPA, HIPPA, PCI-DSS, etc) and security frameworks (ISO, NIST, FISMA, etc) are a good place to start. Security certifications will help you to land your first role. Even though GRC isn't very technical, knowing the basics of information security is still important. I'd recommend studying for entry level certifications like the CompTIA Security+ and SSCP by ISC2.

I might make a video about it one day because it's complicated and I'd really have to think about it lol. I started out my IT career as a helpdesk analyst though. I think most people would find GRC to be really boring, but it just depends on the company and what your career goals are. Personally I didn't like it first, but eventually I saw how important it is and the value it brings to a company. I can see myself working on that side of security for the rest of my career... although I'll still keep my technical skills up as a hobby.
