My uncle was 2nd violinist for a major symphony orchestra. A little over 50 years ago when I was a small child he took me on a magical balloon ride over Stellwagen Bank. It was he, the owner of the balloon and myself. For over an hour we floated about fifty feet over the water while he gave his final concert. A pod of perhaps fifty humpbacks were obviously fans of classical music. The balloonist often took tourists over the spot and he exclaimed that the whales, while frequent visitors to the spot, rarely stayed in the exact same spot for such a long period of time and never remained in a constant state of mid breach. They all just floated there with their heads sticking out of the water. It was the very first time I saw whales. After visiting the whales we continued on our journey and ended up at the Maine coast. Later that evening my uncle passed away. My uncle literally played himself out of the world and for a brief moment took me with him on that magical journey.

It works both ways. Years ago I was free-diving at night on the North Shore of Ohau when I heard this strange sound in the ocean. It sounded like a squeaky screen door. I swam further out, hoping to get a better listen, and I realized I was listening to whales. They must have come in closer because they got louder and clearer. I just floated there, in the dark, listening. It was wonderful.

I'd say cello, but that could get interesting on a boat. With an instrument held on the chin, your knees act as a shock absorber. Can't do that while sitting on a chair. Though come to think of it, there was a Classical piece that used a very small cello as a chin instrument... Hmmm... kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZOrZH2Pm7edhbM

Yes the violoncello da spalla, that came up in my feed as well. But I bet the whales would love the octobass even more! There's several videos on it, but since it's huge and you have to stand on a platform to play it, maybe not the best instrument on a boat.

Renee W. I suppose so, but if you’re going to use all that technology you may as well just play back recordings of other whales, which researchers do. I look at the point here being that you can arouse the whales' curiosity about a voice unlike its own without using any special technology.

I had a similar thing happen once on my sailboat in Massachusetts bay~ I was playing guitar for a couple people on board and when I looked over the side there was a humpback whale that huge eye looking at me. So I played another song, and another... every time I finished playing the whale would do a quarter roll then exhale through the blow hole, when I started the next song it would roll back to watch me again. An amazing experience few believe happened, but I had witnesses.

Tesla was right. The whole universe is energy, vibration and frequency. Even my dearly departed dog loved classical music because of the strings. I wonder if the violin reminds the whales of their own songs. Towards the end of the video, some of the sharp sounds the violinist made reminded me of whale communication. Alright there are tons of people stating “she needs lessons” or “it’d be nice if she could play” but honestly I thought it was really good. She managed vibrato on a rocky boat, the humidity and salt would’ve made it murder to tune with but it still sounded quite pleasant, and she was playing what sounded to be a sort of Chinese tune which followed the key in which most whales sing. I don’t know what everyone is talking about

@Biobele4 жыл бұрын
@@Looserkid13 it's a full yes, humans are caged for being bad and even then it isn't forever, I am a lawyer and I know life sentences don't actually last for life, they have term limits depending on the jurisdiction in some countries like Norway there is no life sentence at all even if you kill someone, other countries have 10years as life in prison so why should animals be giving life in prison simply for being that species or simply for being alive for the simple reason that you want to be able to look at them. Why not go on safari or go deep sea diving and see them in their natural habitats. Do you know the number of animals that have gone extinct thanks to zoo's? Do you know the number of animals that have died thanks to zoo's. Do you realise that every city in the world wants a zoo USA has 52 states and has 2,400 legal zoo's almost everyone has a lion and certain animals, Africa has 55 countries Nigeria has 37 states, those 37 states have many cities but the biggest ones have 2 or more zoo's, India has 1,800 legal zoo's, I am an African the first time I went to a zoo in Nigeria I was shocked like wtf would you cage a lizard, elephant, crocodiles, hippos, monkeys etc for me to look at when we run into many many lizards, monkeys etc on a daily basis, snakes too in my house in Nigeria, I can not count the number of snakes I've come across so why do we need them caged in govmt funded public zoo's noone goes to When you realise that almost every big city in the world has a zoo then you'll see the scale of the problem. I know you are probably from the west or America and you like to think the world begins in your front lawn and ends at your back yard but look beyond you and see if it is a problem or not If Every zoo in the world wanted a pangolin, pangolins would be extinct already but thanks to conservation efforts certain animals are deemed off limits but some zoo's still have them and nothing is done

I remember well a day of whale watching off Cape Cod. We went out a short distance and the captain shut down the engine. He said that some of the whales really liked to interact with tourists and that they would find us. Sure enough, a cow with calf came by to check us out. She left the calf about 50 yds. away and came along side. She rolled over on her side so that she could look at all of us leaning over the side. The captain suggested we talk to her. Everyone did. "Sometimes they will wave, if we do first." So we tried that. She slowly rolled a little farther over and waved back with her pectoral fin! Shortly thereafter, she brought the calf to us for more group interactions. What fun and what a great connection.

That was a very sensitive idea of the violinist. The instrument might remind the whales of their own vocalizations. It has been shown many times that people, animals as well as plants react favourably to beautiful music. (The "Mozart effect," for instance, can help you sleep, or study, depending on the choice of piece you play). I would not get too close to killer whales, but other whales have been known to come up to people diving or on boats, and are quite gentle. (Unless one frightens them or other factors come into play). Animals are much more sensitive and intelligent than we have been giving them credit for.(I wonder how the whale would have liked Schubert's "Serenade." So lovely).

What a lovely story, it's wonderful to be able to share something with another species. I often sit out on the front porch and feed the local magpies and they reward me with song. If it's been slim pickings on a day they fly in as soon as I approach my front door and warble perhaps to say Please...

If she's playing anything more than a $100 violin, she's taking a risk. I'd say pretty good for what she is attempting . . . which is sounds the whales will react to . . . . not YOU. I play classical, blues and jazz violin. Not an easy thing to make the music she's making with a fiddle. She is not an entry-level violinist, critics.

@hester2346 жыл бұрын
That's a like from me, because a) it is obvious you played truly for the whales and not for humans who want to see animals doing 'spectacular' things b) the whales actually stayed although they could have left c) there was *NO* stereotypy! ---- I can not emphasize enough how _tired_ I am of seeing animals with behavioral disorders in videos here on YT, presented as "dancing", "feeling joy", "enjoying music" ect. Thank you for offering your violin to free creatures and for using a reasonable title :)
@jamesmurrell23066 жыл бұрын
Oh, Too hot calm down. Who doesn't enjoy a bit of androcentric imperialism every now and then? Think of it as cultural uplift. I, personally, look forward to a day of joyful, dancing, musically enraptured whales gathered at Carnegie Hall (I'm sure we can overcome the technical difficulties) --- all of them trying to rock some unwieldy but expensive approximation of evening dress. The fish concession in the lobby,alone, would just clean up. We should be looking for new sources of revenue and entertainment among our animal friends, not fewer. Have you ever considered that they find all that "natural" freedom just deadly dull? I'm sure that first chimpanzee, we all saw at the circus in that sparkly, pink tutu was having the time of his life and we fell in love with him too didn't we?
@jennyoyster50546 жыл бұрын
Too hot out here She could have been playing for both, lol.
@hester2346 жыл бұрын
Oh, no worries, I am calm, there are just a lot of misleading videos on KZbin and a lot of people who think they love animals while being entertained by their behavioral disorders and refusing to read any studies about it. I am not a PETA activist, I don't see every animal tortured by husbandry, I am simply well educated in fields of biology such as ethology and I think every kind of husbandry leading to behavioral disorders isn't well enough thought through, especially in these rich countries we KZbin users live in. Going to the zoo, riding horses ect is pure luxury, and that's fine, but keeping animals for your own pleasure should be related to a sense of responsibility and not be justified under the flag of moral relativism if something goes wrong - as your statement seems to suggest. If natural behavior is a sign of a deadly dulled state of being to you, you don't seem to know a lot about ethology in the first place.
@jamesmurrell23066 жыл бұрын
You're definitely pent-up Too hot --- enough so as not to distinguish silly satire from actual belief and intention. In the world of scientific thinking, the victims of this blindered, true-belief are known as the Humorless and Empirically Stunned. Your leg or hoof was being pulled, Dude. In the matter of schoolmarmish moral and intellectual condescension, however, (since we seemed to have been taken to that place) how many animal ethology studies, scrutinized through peer review, pass scientific muster given the inevitable, interpretive lens of an invested human observer. The lovely Goodall, notwithstanding. How much science resides in your science? Have you done actual investigative animal work or are just talking, wistfully, about the admired work of others? Please, Too hot, get off your high horse ( well, so to speak).

Can you state an actual argument/do you have any differentiated opinion or is trolling and/or provoking the only purpose of your comments? If so, congrats, but I am rather interested in real dialogue, that's why I tend to take other people seriously. My bad.

That bit of whale sound that you did at the end was a stroke of Genius as well. I hope I get to see lots of you doing this sort of thing. :D It sure would be interesting to be able to record underwater sound to see if they are making sounds to sing along or responding out loud. It's pretty undeniable that they're responding are showing up and getting closer. It was beautiful thank you for sharing.
