The Maui one wins it for me with that beautiful outdoor space. The LA one is so generic and sleeping on the couch doesn’t sound fun.

Mate, i'm looking at the LA studio and thinking how is that so impossibly cheap! In London maybe, maybe you can find a studio for £1500, I'm not sure though.. and it would not be as nice as that. And that's in £'s not USD, plus in my career choice people get paid 2-3x more for my role in LA. yeah, I can't believe its so cheap tbh.

I live in Hawaii (Maui big island and Oahu currently) and let me tell you this is a RARE catch for Maui. It is in Paia which is the countryside so very far from town and long commute. The problem in Maui is not necessarily the cost of houses which is high. But the fact that land is so limited there’s just so much competition for housing. Once people find good homes (like this one) they LOCK DOWN. there’s a water shortage in Maui so there’s so many zones where houses cannot be built. But Maui is literally a dream and my favorite island 🌴

She has a studio that literally smaller than a studio I lived in a few months ago in Koreatown in LA, and I was paying for that $1375, but it was located on the Western Ave so it was SUPER noisy. So from her price point $1550 + utilities (apparently) + $100 for garage spot I can assume that she lives in some brand new apartment building or just closer to West Hollywood area, or maybe Los Feliz. Overall LA is a very bad place to live if you don't make enough money to afford living in West Hollywood or elsewhere western from Downtown LA. Despite that, you'll still be driving around this crappy neighborhoods that are a complete majority in LA. And don't even start on roads. Pothole on a pothole literally everywhere!

Lee D A few places on Maui only have outdoor showers. I know because I lived in two. Granted, that was forty years ago lol, but the first was charming. It was in Haiku, surrounded by tropical foliage. My landlady had a small herd of cute donkeys that would gather to watch me shower. Another place I rented in Paia also had an outdoor shower, but it would fill with frogs, which terrified me, so my showers were quick and adrenaline fueled. 😂

I’m surprised the amount of space you can get for that price in Maui. I was shocked by how expensive everything was when I visited last year. Even though Maui seems like the better deal I think once you factor in cost of everyday living it would be much harder to pay rent. I’m curious what kind of work your friend did there and if it was a living wage.

@Jessica Sinclair I remember a jug of orange juice was more than twice the price, sections of goods in the grocer were not an entire isle of brands lile on the mainland, but instead a section of one isle, and I remember wasting a lot of gas in an 8 hr traffic jam. They told me locals stocked up at Costco to save money. I would imagine any real estate with a view would be in the millions for non-locals to live there. For native locals, they do have the Hawaiian Home Commission Act.

Everyone listens in different ways. For example I listen and pay attention to people even if I'm not looking at them and it's much easier for me. When I was at school I would get in trouble all the time for looking outside the window while the teacher was explaining but in reality that's how I listen and give my attention. I can look straigt into someone's eyes and not hear a single thing they say. For me it's more of a distraction looking at the person who's talking.

Evil Dax I’ve been living here my whole life also. It’s pretty high compared to when I was little. 2 bedroom in Kona will cost your around 2000-3000$ a month. You could move down towards captain cook or kealekekua but then your almost 45min - 1 hour away from everything. If you move down to Waikaloa then your also far away from everything. The only good places to live on the island (Kona and Hilo) are crazy over priced for what your getting. If you wanna save money and live far away from everything you better like driving cuz you’ll be driving all over the island all day.

I live in Arkansas and it's so crazy because $1500 could rent you a 3, maybe 4 bedroom house in most of the state. I pay $500 for a 1 bed 1 bath apartment with a yard, washer and dryer, and enough parking for 5 vehicles.

I felt like both of these apartments were actually pretty typical of their areas. in hawaii things tend to be a little outdated and amenities like a stovetop or dryer aren't really a given, but space (especially outdoor) is a bit easier to come by, versus in LA the style is definitely more modern and clean at a potential loss for apartment size.

Michelle Ponder I live on Maui and you’re somewhat right but paia doesn’t really have the best studios tbh. Things do tend to be outdated there but in other places on Maui you will almost always find an apartment just the same as the LA one but with a better outdoor area.

Paris and London for example are NOT cheap places in Europe, i know that much LOL. London is comparable to Los Angeles. Life style of Europeans vs. Americans though seems pretty different as far as living expenses. Americans usually each have their own car, so 2 cars in the family. Main method of transportation is cars vs. train unlike some places in Europe. American's want separated home's not attached Town home style, so it may be a lot cheaper in some places of Europe.

I was also really impressed with how the LA apartment was organized. She did a great job minimizing and using her space! I also would LOVE to just sit on the patio of the Hawaii apartment for hours!
