Those who think it’s cheap consider these: 1) Leyton is an upcoming area in zone 3 East London, a great place to live I’m sure, but relatively cheap for London. 2) U.K. tax is much higher than the US. E.g. anything above £40k is taxed at 40% atm. Much less take home income for the same amount of salary compared to the US. The avg salary in the U.K. is about £27k/year and £1800/month after tax. US avg income is a lot more at $59k

calilooya It's very frustrating and means most of us are always living from month to month. No wonder we can't afford a mortgage - we get taxed out of saving anything. Unreal.... I remember getting a pay rise to £2000 a month. I was so happy until I saw the tax 😣😂

It’s actually quite expensive if she wasn’t sharing. Maybe I’m cheap but that’s quite expensive considering salaries aren’t that high in London for most people. Cheaper than New York though.

@@aminajay00 Don't get me wrong £550 is a LOT of money. But £550 for a room that isn't in a crack den and in a relatively nice zone of the city makes it a good deal (for the cesspit hovel that is ldn town) 😂

@@lillustpotion I'm amazed you can still get places for even under £600, even factoring in sharing! Crack dens aside, at least... Ten years ago I was paying £550 for a room in a shared house (1 other person), and while it wasn't a crack den and was in an OK location, that house literally had a squirrel infestation in the attic, with the little dude up there gnawing a hole in the ceiling!! 😂

I love that about the UK and Europe in general - basic needs like bed, TV stand, coffee table, dining tables are usually part of the unit. If you have your own, then the landlord puts it in storage and puts it back in the unit when you leave. My friends who've lived in Spain and Great Britain have never had to spend a lot of money on furniture.

This is actually mostly not the case. If you rent an apartment, there is usually no furniture included. Furnished apartments are usually only for expats and come with a steep price tag. Furnished rooms (basic), however, are quite common in the UK.

muellsonne gotcha. Well, you don’t even get furnished rooms in America, so there you go. When you a posting in Craigslist looking for a 2nd or 3rd roommate, you can’t expect it to have at least a bed where you can put your mattress on top in. Nope, you have to pay for your own moving truck to haul your stuff in. Either way, I’ve rented apartments for 10 yrs in Chicago in 5 different neighborhoods. Very rare you get a furnished ones. So happy to finally be done with that phase in my life since I’ve now bought a small condo for my own and plan to stay in this until a major life change happens/is needed.

I think the sqf is miscalculated because that is definitely more square feet. I saw an apartment yesterday here in NYC that was 536 sqf and it was very small. This is clearly bigger then that. like the bathroom alone seems to be pushing close to 80 sqf.
