The bit about inner monologue is so important. I was never really negative but I was also never positive. I would make some progress and just think "ok. Do it again." instead of being super excited like Louis. I also climb alone a lot so I'm my only source of feedback and after watching Louis coaching for a while I wondered what it was like to have Louis there encouraging me. I think I may be insane but now whenever I climb I just have Louis' voice in my mind constantly giving me positive energy. I think everyone needs their own Louis in some way shape or form because it makes climbing so much easier and more enjoyable. (Though I think my Louis has an Irish accent because I live in Ireland)

I think even Louis has his own down time, but as long as we can make the effort to stay positive all the time, I think it could have a massive impact on all our climbing. I spent quite a lot of time climbing alone too so I totally get you🤣

Yeah he's a nutter out of the climbing gym. I saw him in London pushing an old shopping trolley and when I said "Hi Louis, going climbing?" he spat and me and shouted "go away" - of course he didn't have his trademark glasses and ginger hair, he had long, grey matted hair, a raincoat and big bushy beard. When I emailed Catalyst about this they said "It obviously wasn't him at all was it?". I guess now I've written all this I can see they were probably right.

I think having a positive inner monologue is really important in life and not just climbing, however, i'd be careful about not allowing yourself to feel angry because it's deemed "inappropriate". It's more about how you can feel through it, and let it go, so it doesn't completely ruin your entire climb. I think a lot of the mindfulness tips applies to climbing really well. There was one day that I'd gone to the gym, and was already having a really bad day, and normally i'd be able to release the frustration just by moving my body which constitutes the warmup of my session. However that day, I'd stewed so hard in my frustration, that I actually generated a tendon strain. Probably a scream outside the gym would have helped a lot more than "not being angry".

I'm a mental coach for climbers and I love that you raise the importance of mindset! However, I have to say that it is usually not that simple to change your inner monologue. Our brains are like a popcorn machine generating thoughts all the time. Some times useful, some times unhelpful, often irrational. You cannot much impact that but you can decide which ones you believe and act upon. Once you've become more aware of your inner dialogue, it is usually helpful to work on them when you are not climbing. Writing down things that you often tell yourself on a piece of paper is a good first step. Then it is helpful to distance yourself from the thoughts, seeing them as they are: just thoughts, not necessarily something worth paying attention to. Reflecting on if the thoughts are helpful or not, can also give some perspective. There are plenty of methods used in psychology that can help. So, that's off the wall. Getting into analysis mode or arguing with your own thoughts (like Louis said he was doing in the video) is not effective when you are supposed to climb! What helps then is learning to accept the thought, but actively deciding to turn your focus into something helpful (like how your foot is positioned on the hold or on the next move). Might feel hard initially but mental skills are like physical skills - you only get better by practicing! Thanks again for raising this important topic!

Great stuff as usual Louis! I’m absolutely guilty of this! When I boulder with mates I hype them and we give great encouragement and are super supportive. When I’m alone I dang shred myself with negativity and I get so angry with myself. I’m going to make a conscious effort to “hype myself” and support myself like others would. Thankyou for bringing this to light. I really didn’t realise how hard I am on myself

Great work on the slab. It was fun watching that, especially after your awesome video with Johnny Dawes. I'm curious if you do much work on your ankle flexion. I can't tell if you were maybe at the end range of your mobility there as it seemed like your heel lifted off more compared to Louis (could also be the shoes). I always thought I had good flexibility but my PT pointed out my ankle mobility needed work lol

The "no one's looking" bit I'd put a caveat which is that if I saw you climb in a gym or at a crag, since you're somewhat recognizable, I'd be paying attention, but if you fell I'd think "damn, that thing must be hard". I've seen Mejdi Schalck climbing at my gym and failing on boulders (right after Budapest so he was in beast mode), overheard them saying it was a kilter 8b+...was just cool seeing him and other World Cup climbers climb !

I do look a lot but I either think, "wow that's hard", "how would I do that", "why did that work" or "what would make that work". In the last three cases I'm just trying to see what I could learn, in the first one I'm just impressed
