The original song was composed in Spanish by Maria Grever, a Mexican composer in 1934. The original title was When I Return To Your Side (Cuando vuelva a tu lado) and was released by Orquesta Pedro Vía. A more popular Spanish version was recorded by Trio Los Panchos. The English lyrics was written by Stanley Adams, also in 1934, and was first released by Jimmy Ague. It was then covered by Dorsey Brothers. A more popular English version was released by Dinah Washington in 1959 and reached the Billboard No.1 R&B. It was covered by more than a dozen major artists, like Ben E. King, Dean Martin, Natalie Cole, Sarah Vaughan. Dinah Washington's version was used in almost a dozen movies. My favorite is the version by Tony Bennett, which was used in the film One Fine Day with Michelle Pfeiffer and Goerge Clooney. Enjoy!
